    Geschlecht ist heute als Analysekategorie auch in der Geographie etabliert. Daher sollen in diesem einführenden Band der Reihe "Sozialgeographie kompakt" die wesentlichen theoretischen Grundlagen, die relevanten Methoden und die wichtigsten Forschungsfelder und Forschungsergebnisse vorgestellt werden. Dabei steht nicht das biologische Geschlecht (Sex) im Zentrum der Überlegungen, sondern Gender, das soziale Geschlecht, das als Kategorie diskursiv und in der alltäglichen Praxis hergestellt wird. Eine geschlechtsbezogene Geographie widmet sich den raumrelevanten Aspekten von Geschlechterrollen und Geschlechterrelationen, beschreibt und analysiert die Handlungsspielräume und Restriktionen durch die Konstrukte "Weiblichkeit" und "Männlichkeit" und diskutiert Möglichkeiten, diese oft einschränkenden Konzepte zu verändern. Viele empirische Beispiele geben einen Einblick in die deutschsprachige und internationale Geschlechterforschung in der Geographie.

    Die Soziologin Martina Löw hat eine Grundlegung zu einer Soziologie des Raumes vorgelegt. Es sei die Entstehung des Raumes ein soziales Phänomen und deshalb nur aus den gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen, als prozesshaftes Phänomen zu begreifen. Frau Löw versteht deshalb den Raum als Synthese von sozialen Gütern, Menschen und Orten sowie als Spacing durch Placierung jener Güter, Menschen und Orte im Prozess des Bauens. Freilich vollziehe sich die Konstitution von Raum im Alltag vielfach durch Routinen, welche die Eigenart des Raumes verstellten und institutionell unsichtbar machten. Dagegen soll nun die neu zu debattierende Soziologie des Raumes antreten. Bislang werde in soziologischen Theorien mehrheitlich eine absolutistische Raumvorstellung gepflegt, die einzig die euklidische Geometrie als Bezugssystem reflektiere. Frau Löw dagegen entwirft einen prozessualen Raumbegriff, in dem Raum nicht mehr nur als starrer Hintergrund verstanden wird.

Using the example of such one-room-architectures, this book explores the potential of an actor-network-theory (ANT) approach to space in the field of architecture. Sabine Hansmann focuses on the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, England by Foster Associates (1978) to investigate the mutual entanglement of people, objects and building. Jochen Kibel zeigt: Im Streit um das Neue Museum in Berlin und das Militärhistorische Museum in Dresden artikulierten sich unterschiedliche Kollektivierungsdiskurse, in denen die Vergangenheit nach den Anforderungen der Gegenwart umgeformt wurde. Der retrospektive Blick gewährt damit immer auch die prospektive Hoffnung auf eine bessere Vergangenheit. Die dynamischen Verhältnisse der Gegenwart bringen schließlich eine Form reflexiver Identitätsbildung hervor, in der auch die Fähigkeit anhaltender Selbstkritik in der Vergangenheit ›wiedergefunden‹ wird.     This book explores and debates the urban transformations that have taken place in Vienna over the past 30 years and their consequences in policy fields such as labour and housing, political and social participation and the environment. Historically, European cities have been characterised by a strong association between social cohesion, quality of life, economic ambition and a robust State. Vienna is an excellent example for that. In more recent years, however, cities were pressured to change policy principles and mechanisms in the context of demographic shifts, post-industrial transformations and welfare recalibration which have led to worsened social conditions in many cities. Each chapter in this volume discusses Vienna’s responses to these pressures in key policy arenas, looking at outcomes from the context-specific local arrangements. Against a theoretical framework debating the European city as a model of inclusion and social justice, authors explore the local capacity to innovate urban policies and to address new social risks, while paying attention to potential trade-offs. The book questions and assesses the city’s resilience using time series and an institutional analysis of four key dimensions that characterise the European city model within the context of post-industrial transition: redistribution, recognition, representation and sustainability. It offers a multiscalar perspective of urban governance through labour, housing, participatory and environmental policies, bringing together different levels and public policy types. Women provide much of the formal and informal work in agriculture and food production, distribution, and preparation often under precarious conditions. A cadre of scholars and practitioners from across the globe provide their timely observations on these issues as well as more personal reflections on its impact on their lives and work. Four major themes emerge from these accounts and are interwoven throughout: the pervasiveness of food insecurity, the ubiquity of women’s care work, food justice, and policies and research that can that can result in a resilience that reimagines the future for greater gender and intersectional equality. We identify what lessons we can learn from this global pandemic about research and practices related to gender, food, and agricultural systems to strive for more equitable arrangements. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars and practitioners working on gender and food and agriculture during this global pandemic and beyond.

    Since the relational turn, scholars have combated methodological universalism, nationalism, and individualism in researching social-spatial transformations. Yet, when leaving the gaps between the traveling and local epistemic assumptions unattended, engaging relational spatial theories in empirical research may still reproduce established theoretical claims. Following the sociology of knowledge tradition and taking Critical Realism as a meta-theoretical framework, Xiaoxue Gao takes relational spatial theories as traveling conceptual knowledge and develops meaningful and context-sensitive ways of engaging them in studying the complex urban phenomenon in China. She offers conceptual elucidations and methodological roadmaps, which leap productively from employing plural causal hypotheses to generating effect-based explanations for locally observable events. They are exemplified by manifold interrogations of Beijing's Artworld as a conjuncture of particular events.

    This chapter reflects on contributions in this book, providing an outlook on displacement into a future rendered uncertain by the Covid-19 pandemic. The contemporary urban political economy has implications for housing. This justifies a focus on human needs articulated through the concepts of dwelling and home. These allow displacement to be explored as ‘un-homing’. The human right to adequate housing incorporates the main dimensions of home and un-homing. However, these are seldom reflected fully in housing policy and implementation. As recommended by the UN with reference to this right, most countries adopted Covid-19 emergency regulations with measures to protect housing. In South Africa, the resulting stay on evictions was violated, the state also planning new displacement through temporary relocations intended to decongest informal settlements in response to the pandemic. Home intrusion and privacy violations through smart technology are further forms of un-homing sharpened by responses to the pandemic. Future research can productively bring this lived experience to bear on policy.

    Despite the emphasis of the European Regional Policy on territorial cohesion, regional disparities have been increasing within Europe in the past years. The metropolitan areas in almost all countries are considerably growing while regions outside of agglomerations are stagnating or even declining. Against this background this book aims to provide an understanding of the underlying processes of polarisation and related regional and local policies. This open access volume contributes to the debates about polarisation and regional development by focussing on questions of spatial justice, power distribution and policy transfer. Theoretical and empirically grounded contributions show that European policies are indeed reproducing socio-spatial inequalities instead of challenging them. The book shows further the existing potentials and limits of individuals, economic, political and civil society actors to respond to polarisation on the regional and local level. In this book conceptual thoughts on polarisation, regional policy and regional development are combined with empirical research and resulting implications for policymaking.     This open access book approaches the anxieties inherent in food consumption and production in Vietnam. The country’s rapid and recent economic integration into global agro-food systems and consumer markets spurred a new quality of food safety concerns, health issues and distrust in food distribution networks that have become increasingly obscured. This edited volume further puts the eating body centre stage by following how gendered body norms, food taboos, power structures and social differentiation shape people’s ambivalent relations with food. It uncovers Vietnam’s trajectories of agricultural modernisation against which consumers and producers manoeuvre amongst food self-sufficiency, security and abundance. Food Anxiety in Globalising Vietnam is explicitly about ‘dangerous’ food – regarding its materiality and meaning. It provides social science perspectives on anxieties related to food and surrounding discourses that travel between the local and the global, the individual and society and into the body. Therefore, the book’s lens of food anxiety matters for social theory and for understanding the embeddedness and discontinuities of food globalizations in Vietnam and beyond.     London is one of the world’s most popular destinations and visitors contribute approximately £14.9 billion of expenditure to the city every year. Its tourism and events sectors are growing and over the last few years London has received more visitors than ever before. However, detailed accounts of the city’s visitor economy are conspicuously absent. This book analyses how the capital is developing as a destination through the expansion of tourism and events into new urban spaces. The book outlines how parts of London not previously regarded as tourist territory are now subject to the visitor gaze with tourism spreading beyond established central zones into peripheral, suburban and residential areas – in part propelled by a big rise in peer to peer accommodation use. Simultaneously, London’s airports and sports stadiums and their surrounds are becoming destinations in their own right. New vantage points have been created, allowing tourists to explore the city: from above, at night-time or through tours given by the homeless; via the opening up of the River Thames; or through the transformation of local parks into eventscapes. The book explores these trends and shows how urban destinations expand. In doing so, it enhances our understanding of London and highlights the growing significance of tourism and events in global cities.

    In Thinking Like a Climate Hannah Knox confronts the challenges that climate change poses to knowledge production and modern politics. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among policy makers, politicians, activists, scholars, and the public in Manchester, England—birthplace of the Industrial Revolution—Knox explores the city's strategies for understanding and responding to deteriorating environmental conditions. Climate science, Knox argues, frames climate change as a very particular kind of social problem that confronts the limits of administrative and bureaucratic techniques of knowing people, places, and things. Exceeding these limits requires forging new modes of relating to climate in ways that reimagine the social in climatological terms. Knox contends that the day-to-day work of crafting and implementing climate policy and translating climate knowledge into the work of governance demonstrates that local responses to climate change can be scaled up to effect change on a global scale.
