By analyzing and contextualizing these modern day performances, the author reveals striking parallels between transformational events taking place during the era of the play's revival and events within the play itself. This book challenges the standard view that formal rhetoric arose in response to the political and social environment of ancient Athens. Instead, it is argued, it was the theatre of Ancient Greece, first appearing around 500 BC that prompted the development of formalized rhetoric, which evolved soon thereafter. Indeed, ancient Athenian drama was inextricably bound to the city-state's development as a political entity, as well as to the birth of rhetoric. Ancient Greek dramatists used mythical conflicts as an opportunity for staging debates over issues of contemporary relevance, civic responsibility, war, and the role of the gods. The author shows how the essential feature of dialogue in drama created a 'counterpoint'--an interplay between the actor making the speech and the character reacting to it on stage. This innovation spurred the development of other more sophisticated forms of argumentation, which ultimately formed the core of formalized rhetoric pt. 1. What drama does and how it does it -- Setting the stage -- Seeing is believing -- The muse takes a holiday -- "It's counterpoint," he countered, and pointed -- Illusion and collusion -- Reaction time -- pt. 2. The second stage: the invention of rhetoric -- Paradigm shift happens -- Perhaps you will object -- Putting the accuser on trial.

This Blackwell Guide provides a broad-ranging introduction to ancient Greek drama, which flourished principally in Athens from the sixth to the third century bc. All three genres of Greek drama are discussed - tragedy, comedy, and satyr play - as well as the five surviving playwrights - Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, and Menander, together with brief entries on lost playwrights. The Guide also addresses contextual issues, such as: the origins of the dramatic art forms; the conventions of the festivals, the theater, and the performers; the relationship between drama and the worship of Dionysos; the political dimension; and how to read and watch Greek drama. The final section consists of 46 one-page synopses of each of the surviving plays

Frontmatter -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Note on the Text -- Introduction: Tragedy in the Philosophical Age of the Greeks -- 1 Catalogs and Culture -- 2 Intrigue and Ontology -- 3 Agōn and Authority -- Conclusion: The Stages of Early Greek Thought -- Works Cited -- Index A bold new reconception of ancient Greek drama as a mode of philosophical thinkingThe Philosophical Stage offers an innovative approach to ancient Greek literature and thought that places drama at the heart of intellectual history. Drawing on evidence from tragedy and comedy, Joshua Billings shines new light on the development of early Greek philosophy, arguing that drama is our best source for understanding the intellectual culture of classical Athens. In this incisive book, Billings recasts classical Greek intellectual history as a conversation across discourses and demonstrates the significance of dramatic reflections on widely shared theoretical questions. He argues that neither "literature" nor "philosophy" was a defined category in the fifth century BCE, and develops a method of reading dramatic form as a structured investigation of issues at the heart of the emerging discipline of philosophy.A breathtaking work of intellectual history by one of today's most original classical scholars, The Philosophical Stage presents a novel approach to ancient drama and sets a path for a renewed understanding of early Greek thought
