    eng: On the premise of a critical inquiry into the epistemological/cultural concepts supporting the use of the term 'feminine aesthetics' this thesis focuses on the way the mechanisms of construction and establishment of the category 'the feminine' function within processes of representation. Critical inceptions in artistic practice and theory since the 1970s often have raised the issue of the mechanisms of representation. Fundamentally criticizing the occidental myth of a coherent/self-identical subject of consciousness these practices are profoundly influenced by Jaques Lacan's psychoanalysis and his examination of the way identity and sexual difference are being constructed; by feminist theory; by filmtheory; and by structuralism and poststructuralism. This thesis discusses specific artistic strategies questioning the cultural production of 'femininitiy' (and 'masculinity'). It examines the way gender as a semiotic category positions 'woman' as functional point of reference within a system of differences; how processes of representation function with regard to the constitution of sexually differentiated subjects; finally, what kind of strategies an analysis of processes of signification, and representation within aesthetic discourse (in artistic practice, theory and the discourse of art history) might be able to offer. Reflecting upon the mechanisms of representation as processes constituting and organizing the social systems of perception has become part of a critical practice within the field of art. This, therefore, also implies questioning the discourse of art history as an academic discipline and its function within systems of differentiation. appropriation and attribution. In adopting recent attempts to initiate a move towards a history of art aware of its own mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion this thesis intends to contribute to a critical and self-reflective theory of representation.
