    This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany. The nineteen essays share the overarching aim to compare the tropes of travel and exile as generators of a critical discourse and as central categories within German exile, in particular literature, music and film. The essays are guided by powerful questions: How does travel compare to exile, and how much overlap is there between these two categories? How do exiles travel, as practitioners of displacement? Or rather, to what extent does the concept of travel apply to the exilic predicament? Do the terms "exile" and "travel" still have validity in our postmodern era of cosmopolitanism, ever increasing mobility, the embrace of otherness, and tourism? How does exile literature in which travel is thematized compare to the tradition(s) of travel writing? And how are the critical moments of leavetaking, re-membering home, and return imagined and narrated? The essays feature numerous German and Austrian authors, musicians, and filmmakers and lend fresh insights into German Exile and the field of Exile Studies at large.     Für viele der 2000 deutschsprachigen Autoren, die durch das Aufkommen des Nationalsozialismus emigrieren oder ins Exil gehen mussten, bedeuteten die USA den Endpunkt einer langen Odyssee. Mit über 300.000 aufgenommenen Flüchtlingen zwischen 1933 und 1945 nahm das Land die Spitzenposition unter den Exilländern ein. Besonders nach 1939, als die meisten europäischen Staaten von deutschen Truppen besetzt waren, erhielten die Vereinigten Staaten für das Überleben der Naziverfolgten eine herausragende Bedeutung. Einmal auf der anderen Seite angekommen, wurden viele Flüchtlinge mit einer Realität konfrontiert, die nicht ihren Hoffnungen, Erwartungen und Vorstellungen entsprach. Die Begegnung mit den Vereinigten Staaten wurde zu einer Begegnung mit dem Fremden. Hauptthese des Buches ist, dass die Rezeption der USA zu den drei unterschiedlichen Reaktionsweisen der Ablehnung, der Anpassung und der Zerrissenheit führte. Die Autoren, die im Zentrum des Buches stehen, werden im Sinne Max Webers als Idealtypen dieser Reaktionsweisen entwickelt. Ihre Darstellung amerikanischer Gesellschaft und Kultur sowie deren Hintergründe und Motivation wird anhand ihrer Autobiographien untersucht und verdeutlicht. Für den Typus der Ablehnung steht der Schriftsteller Hans Marchwitza (1890-1965). Der Journalist Hans Sahl (1902-1993) repräsentiert den langsamen Prozess der Anpassung. Der Typus der Zerrissenheit wird anhand des Philosophen und Literaturkritikers Ludwig Marcuse (1894-1971) untersucht. Der Autor unternimmt den Versuch, neue Ergebnisse der Autobiographie- und der Exilforschung miteinander zu kombinieren und setzt sich dabei kritisch mit den Forschungsergebnissen auf diesem Gebiet auseinander. Zudem wird die Situation der Exilanten im Amerika der 30er und 40er Jahre anhand ihrer Lebensbedingungen, der Einwanderungsgesetzgebung sowie der Aufnahme durch die einheimische Bevölkerung eingehend beleuchtet. Die Typologie gewinnt so eine Bedeutung über die drei exemplifizierten Fälle hinaus, die auch auf andere Autoren anwendbar ist.

It combines analyses of predominantly Jewish authors of Central Europe of the twentieth century who are not usually connected, including Kafka, Kraus, Levi, Lustig, Wiesel, and Frankl. It follows the typical routes that exiled writers took, from East to West and later often as far as America. The concept and forms of exile are analyzed from many different points of view and great importance is devoted especially to the forms of inner exile. In Forms of Exile in Jewish Literature and Thought, Bronislava Volková, an exile herself and thus intimately familiar with the topic through her own experience, develops a unique typology of exile that will enrich the field of intellectual and literary history of twentieth-century Europe and America

In response to being exiled to the Black Sea by the Roman emperor Augustus in 8 AD, Ovid began to compose the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto and to create for himself a place of intellectual refuge. From there he was able to reflect out loud on how and why his own art had been legally banned and left for dead on the margins of the empire. As the last of the Augustan poets, Ovid was in a unique position to take stock of his own standing and of the place of poetry itself in a culture deeply restructured during the lengthy rule of Rome's first emperor. This study considers exile in the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto as a place of genuine suffering and a metaphor for poetry's marginalization from the imperial city. It analyzes, in particular, Ovid's representation of himself and the emperor Augustus against the background of Roman religion, law, and poetry
