    Die Ausgestaltung musealer Erinnerungskultur zu Flucht und Vertreibung deutscher Minderheiten am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ist ein umkämpfter Schauplatz - sowohl zwischen Deutschland, Polen und Tschechien, als auch innerhalb der drei Nationen. Vincent Regente arbeitet in seiner Studie die Ursachen für diesen Konflikt am Beispiel von sieben aktuellen Museumsprojekten in Brüssel, Berlin, Danzig, Kattowitz, Görlitz, Aussig und München erstmalig vergleichend heraus. Durch einen konsequent trinationalen Ansatz, eine erste Historisierung des Diskurses nach 1989 und die Berücksichtigung der zunehmenden Bedeutung der Geschichtspolitik der Europäischen Union liefert er umfassende Einblicke in das Thema.

Wie haben Postkarten den öffentlichen Raum visuell und sprachlich mitgestaltet? Wie die Selbst- und Fremdbilder der dort lebenden Menschen geformt?     In 1624 the Dutch West India Company established the colony of Brazil. Only thirty years later, the Dutch Republic handed over the colony to Portugal, never to return to the South Atlantic. Because Dutch Brazil was the first sustained Protestant colony in Iberian America, the events there became major news in early modern Europe and shaped a lively print culture.In Amsterdam's Atlantic, historian Michiel van Groesen shows how the rise and tumultuous fall of Dutch Brazil marked the emergence of a "public Atlantic" centered around Holland's capital city. Amsterdam served as Europe's main hub for news from the Atlantic world, and breaking reports out of Brazil generated great excitement in the city, which reverberated throughout the continent. Initially, the flow of information was successfully managed by the directors of the West India Company. However, when Portuguese sugar planters revolted against the Dutch regime, and tales of corruption among leading administrators in Brazil emerged, they lost their hold on the media landscape, and reports traveled more freely. Fueled by the powerful local print media, popular discussions about Brazil became so bitter that the Amsterdam authorities ultimately withdrew their support for the colony.The self-inflicted demise of Dutch Brazil has been regarded as an anomaly during an otherwise remarkably liberal period in Dutch history, and consequently generations of historians have neglected its significance. Amsterdam's Atlantic puts Dutch Brazil back on the front pages and argues that the way the Amsterdam media constructed Atlantic events was a key element in the transformation of public opinion in Europe

    The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain saw the proposal of so many endeavors called "projects"—a catchphrase for the daring, sometimes dangerous practice of shaping the future—that Daniel Defoe dubbed his era a "Projecting Age." These ideas spanned a wide variety of scientific, technological, and intellectual interventions intended for the betterment of England. But for all the fanfare surrounding them, few such schemes actually materialized, leaving scores of defunct visions, from Defoe's own attempt to farm cats for perfume, to Mary Astell's proposal to charter a college for women, to countless ventures for improving land, streamlining government, and inventing new consumer goods. Taken together, these failed plans form a compelling alternative history of a Britain that might have been.The Wreckage of Intentions offers a comprehensive and critical account of projects, exploring the historical memory surrounding these concrete yet incomplete efforts to advance British society during a period defined by revolutions in finance and agriculture, the rise of experimental science, and the establishment of constitutional monarchy. Using methods of literary analysis, David Alff shows how projects began as written proposals, circulated as print objects, spurred physical undertakings, and provoked responses in the realms of poetry, fiction, and drama. Mapping this process discloses the ways in which eighteenth-century authors applied their faculties of imagination to achieve finite goals and, in so doing, devised new ways of seeing the world through its future potential. Approaching old projects through the language, landscapes, data, and personas they left behind, Alff contends this vision was, and remains, vital to the functions of statecraft, commerce, science, religion, and literature

By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest

    As a cultural antithesis, the Orient is a site of projections for European mind-sets and fantasies. Since the 19th century, it has been an omnipresent subject, particularly in francophone literature and art. The contributions to this volume uncover these constructions of the Orient in their complementarity and their different manifestations in visual art and literature. As an interdisciplinary contribution to the orientalism debate, the literary and artistic works of so-called orientalism are no longer subjected to a stock critique of ideology through scholarship. Rather, we are shown that many of these books are already engaged in the act of deconstructing the Orient as an aesthetic practice Der Orient ist als kulturelle Antithese eine Projektionsfläche europäischer Denkweisen und Phantasmen. Besonders in der französischen und frankophonen Literatur und Kunst ist er seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein allgegenwärtiges Thema. Die Beiträge des Bandes machen diese Konstruktionen des Orients in ihrer Komplementarität und in der medialen Differenz von bildender Kunst und Literatur sichtbar. Als ein interdisziplinärer Beitrag zur Orientalismus-Debatte werden die literarischen und künstlerischen Werke des sogenannten Orientalismus nicht länger einer versatzstückhaften Ideologiekritik durch Wissenschaft unterzogen.     Coming upon the text of a document such as a charter or a letter inserted into the fabric of a medieval chronicle and "ed in full or at length, modern readers might well assume that the chronicler is simply doing what good historians have always done-that is, citing his source as evidence. Such documentary insertions are not ubiquitous in medieval historiography, however, and are in fact particularly characteristic of the history-writing produced by the Angevins in England and Northern France in the later twelfth century.In History and the Written Word, Henry Bainton puts these documentary gestures center stage in an attempt to understand what the chroniclers were doing historiographically, socially, and culturally when they transcribed a document into a work of history. Where earlier scholars who have looked at the phenomenon have explained this increased use of documents by considering the growing bureaucratic state and an increasing historiographical concern for documentary evidence, Bainton seeks to resituate these histories, together with their authors and users, within literate but sub-state networks of political power. Proposing a new category he designates "literate lordship" to describe the form of power with which documentary history-writing was especially concerned, he shows how important the vernacular was in recording the social lives of these literate lords and how they found it a particularly appropriate medium through which to record their roles in history.Drawing on the perspectives of modern and medieval narratology, medieval multilingualism, and cultural memory, History and the Written Word argues that members of an administrative elite demonstrated their mastery of the rules of literate political behavior by producing and consuming history-writing and its documents

    Perhaps unexpectedly, English travel writing during the long eighteenth century reveals a discourse of global civility. By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.
