    Since the beginning of the eighteenth century the philosophy of art has been engaged in the project of finding out what the fine arts might have in common, and thus how they might be defined. Peter Kivy's purpose in this very accessible and lucid book is to trace the history of that enterprise and then to argue that the definitional project has been unsuccessful, with absolute music as the continual stumbling block. He offers what he believes is a fruitful change of strategy: instead of undertaking an obsessive quest for sameness, let us explore the differences among the arts. He presents five case studies of such differences, three from literature, two from music. With its combination of historical and analytic approaches this book will appeal to a wide range of readers in philosophy, literary studies, and music, as well as to nonacademic readers with an interest in the arts. Its vivid style requires no technical knowledge of music on the part of the reader.

    In the Critique of Judgment, Kant argues that feeling is part of the system of the mind. Judgments of taste based on feeling are a unique kind of judgment, and the feeling that is their foundation forms an independent third power of the mind. Feeling has a special role within this system in that it also provides a transition between the other two powers of the mind, cognition and desire. Matthews argues that feeling, our experience of beauty, provides a transition because it orients humans in a sensible world. Judgments of taste help overcome the difficulties that arise when rational cognitive and moral ends must be pursued in a sensible world. Matthews demonstrates how feeling, disassociated from rational activities in Kant's earlier works, is now central in reaching rational ends and understanding humans as unified rational beings. Audience: This book would be of interest to research libraries and university libraries, philosophers, historians and aestheticians.

    Eighteenth-Century Aesthetics and the Reconstruction of Art is a collection of essays exploring the rise of aesthetics as a response to, and as a part of, the reshaping of the arts in modern society. The theories of art that were developed under the name of "aesthetics" in the later eighteenth century have traditionally been understood as contributions to a field of study in existence at least since the time of Plato. If art is a practice to be found in all human societies, then the philosophy of art is the search for universal features of that practice, statable in definitions of art and beauty. Despite appearances to the contrary, however, art as we know it - the system of "fine arts" - is largely peculiar to modern society. Aesthetics, far from being a perennial discipline, emerged when it did in an effort both to understand and to shape this new social practice. The essays included in this volume share the conviction that aesthetic ideas can be fully understood when seen not only in relation to intellectual and social contexts but as themselves constructed in history. This is relevant to the concept of art itself, which acquired its current meaning in relation to actual changes in the social uses made of painting, writing, and the other media. Ranging widely in method, with allegiance to no particular theoretical outlook, these studies are both grounded in the history of philosophy and drawn from recent developments in literary theory, art history, and social history, and seek to clarify philosophical issues by taking their historical content into account.

Hume's Aesthetic Theory traces the roots of aesthetics in the concepts of 'sentiment' and 'taste' and the epistemological possibilities that Hume's use of them has offered." "Aesthetics has tended to concentrate on forms of aesthetic experience and attitude that developed after Kant's Third Critique, but these concepts contrast with aesthetic thought in the eighteenth century, which is based on 'sentiment' and 'taste'.
