(Re)Writing Craft focuses on the gap that exists in many English departments between creative writers and compositionists on one hand, and literary scholars on the other, in an effort to radically transform the way English studies are organized and practiced today. In proposing a new form of writing he calls ""craft criticism,"" Mayers, himself a compositionist and creative writer, explores the connections between creative writing and composition studies programs, which currently exist as separate fields within the larger and more amorphous field of English studies. Academic Discourse and Critical Consciousnes traces the attempts of one writing teacher to understand theoretically - and to respond pedagogically - to what happens when students from diverse backgrounds learn to use language in college. Critical of even her own previous work, Patricia Bizzell presents a picture of how she has grappled with major issues in composition studies over the past decade and offers suggestions for the development of composition studies as an academic discipline

The onslaught of the digital age has rapidly redefined the parameters of virtually every aspect of daily life, and the world of academic scholarship is no exception. In English departments across American institutions of higher education, faculty members face an uphill battle in the struggle for professional recognition of their digital works. In Cultivating Ecologies for Digital Media Work, author Catherine C. Braun calls for a shift in thinking about the professional methods and digital goals of the English studies discipline and its central texts. Braun's in-depth study documents English pr

This text explores fundamental issues relating to student literacies and instructor roles and practices within academic contexts. It offers a brief history of literacy theories and argues for "socioliterate" approaches to teaching and learning in which texts are viewed as primarily socially constructed. Central to socioliteracy, the concepts "genre" and "discourse community," are presented in detail. The author argues for roles for literacy practitioners in which they and their students conduct research and are involved in joint pedagogical endeavors. The final chapters are devoted to outlining how the views presented can be applied to a variety of classroom texts. Core curricular design principles are outlined, and three types of portfolio-based academic literacy classrooms are described 1. Literacy and pedagogy: Three views -- 2. Genre knowledge and socioliteracies: What readers and writers may share -- 3. Genre and social forces: "Homely" and academic texts -- 4. Discourse communities and communities of practice: Membership, conflict, and diversity -- 5. Special roles: Literacy practitioners as campus mediators and researchers -- 6. Students as researchers: Investigating texts, processes, and contexts -- 7. The socioliterate classroom: Basic tenets and goals -- 8. Putting tenets and goals into practice: Using portfolios in literacy classrooms -- 9. Conclusion

Rhetoric and composition is an academic discipline that informs all other fields in teaching students how to communicate their ideas and construct their arguments. It has grown dramatically to become a cornerstone of many undergraduate courses and curricula, and it is a particularly dynamic field for scholarly research. This book offers an accessible introduction to teaching and studying rhetoric and composition. By combining the history of rhetoric, explorations of its underlying theories, and a survey of current research (with practical examples and advice), Steven Lynn offers a solid foundation for further study in the field. Readers will find useful information on how students have been taught to invent and organize materials, to express themselves correctly and effectively, and how the ancient study of memory and delivery illuminates discourse and pedagogy today. This concise book thus provides a starting point for learning about the discipline that engages writing, thinking, and argument Machine generated contents note: 1. The open hand; 2. Invention; 3.

Anyone Can Write offers a wealth of creative writing tasks which will be an indispensable source of ideas for teachers. The book includes a variety of exercises on writing features, stories and poems. In all, the book offers guidance on forty different story-writing tasks, five feature-writing tasks, and fourteen poetry-writing tasks. The simple step-by-step explanation of the procedure to be adopted for each task makes the book very user-friendly. The tasks included in this book have evolved from a series of workshops on creative writing the authors have conducted for students in the age group of twelve to seventeen years. The samples of writing included to illustrate each task are authentic writings of students who participated in the workshops. These will help readers gauge the feasibility of the tasks and the level of response that can be expected from learner groups

Yancey explores reflection as a promising body of practice and inquiry in the writing classroom. Yancey develops a line of research based on concepts of philosopher Donald Schon and others involving the role of deliberative reflection in classroom contexts. Developing the concepts of reflection-in-action, constructive reflection, and reflection-in-presentation, she offers a structure for discussing how reflection operates as students compose individual pieces of writing, as they progress through successive writings, and as they deliberately review a compiled body of their work-a portfo

Brian Huot's aim for this book is both ambitious and provocative. He wants to reorient composition studies' view of writing assessment. To accomplish this, he not only has to inspire the field to perceive assessment?generally not the most appreciated area of study?as deeply significant to theory and pedagogy, he also has to counter some common misconceptions about the history of assessment in writing
