In The Language of the Heart, the first full-scale study of the depictions of the human heart in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Robert Erickson contends that the making of the modern world coincided with the reconfiguration of gender and reveals how changes in the representation of the heart both reflected and helped produce this shift. In The Motion of the Heart and Blood (1653), William Harvey had set forth the scientific model of a phallic, generative organ pumping blood through a feminized body; in Paradise Lost, it is through the protracted rape and violation of Eve's heart that the Fall of Man occurs; nearly a century later Samuel Richardson's Clarissa would present a no less forceful feminist and heroic narrative of the heart's power. Examining these and other - mostly English - literary, medical, religious, and philosophical texts, Erickson uncovers two ruling clusters of metaphors: one associating the heart with language, writing, and thought, the other with sex, passion, and gender. Charting the tension between the two, he offers a brilliant new reading of one of the central symbols in Western culture. The Language of the Heart presents a study of images that is less concerned with the tally of external figures of nature than with the construction of human physiology - and human nature itself. It is at once a work of rigorous historicist examination and a book of immense relevance to modern readers living in a new "cardiocentric" age.

In Proust and Emotion, Inge Crosman Wimmers proposes a new approach to A la recherche du temps perdu that centres on the role of affect. Through close reading of the hero-narrator's personal history, the author shows how emotional paradigms (especially separation anxiety), involuntary memory, and other compelling impressions give focus and structure to Proust's novel. Drawing on reader-oriented and emotion theories, she shows how affect commands the attention of the 'motivated reader' and is crucial to the process of self-understanding for both the narrator and the reader. This is the first extensive study in English to take fully into consideration the drafts (esquisses) published in the new Pléiade edition of the novel, the Mauriac edition of Albertine disparue, and material from the unpublished Proust manuscripts - all of which shed further light on the importance of affect in A la recherche. Proust and Emotion will appeal to readers interested in an approach to Proust that combines insights from philosophy, psychology, and literary aesthetics and in a poetics of reading that pays particular attention to emotion The Narrating Presence --Separation Anxiety: The drame du coucher --Separation Anxiety: An Emotional Paradigm --Separation Anxiety in Love Relationships --Narrative Identity --Emblematic Narration --From Impression to Expression --Reading Emotions --Conclusion: Reading Proust in the Twenty-first Century.

"A pioneer in queer theory and literary studies, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick brings together for the first time in Touching Feeling her most powerful explorations of emotion and expression. In essays that show how her groundbreaking work in queer theory has developed into a deep interest in affect, Sedgwick offers what she calls "tools and techniques for nondualistic thought," in the process touching and transforming such theoretical discourses as psychoanalysis, speech-act theory, Western Buddhism, and the Foucauldian "hermeneutics of suspicion." In prose sometimes somber, often high-spirited, and always accessible and moving, Touching Feeling interrogates - through virtuoso readings of works by Henry James, J. L. Austin, Judith Butler, the psychologist Silvan Tomkins and others - emotion in many forms. What links the work of teaching to the experience of illness? How can shame become an engine for queer politics, performance, and pleasure? Is sexuality more like an affect or a drive? Is paranoia the only realistic epistemology for modern intellectuals? Ultimately, Sedgwick's unfashionable commitment to the truth of happiness propels a book as open-hearted as it is intellectually daring." -- Publisher's description.

Annotation Because emotion is assumed to depend on subjectivity, the "death of the subject" described in recent years by theorists such as Derrida, de Man, and Deleuze would also seem to mean the death of feeling. This revolutionary work transforms the burgeoning interdisciplinary debate on emotion by suggesting, instead, a positive relation between the "death of the subject" and the very existence of emotion. Reading the writings of Derrida and de Man--theorists often seen as emotionally contradictory and cold--Terada finds grounds for construing emotion as nonsubjective. This project offers fresh interpretations of deconstruction's most important texts, and of Continental and Anglo-American philosophers from Descartes to Deleuze and Dennett. At the same time, it revitalizes poststructuralist theory by deploying its methodologies in a new field, the philosophy of emotion, to reach a startling conclusion: if we really were subjects, we would have no emotions at all. Engaging debates in philosophy, literary criticism, psychology, and cognitive science from a poststructuralist and deconstructive perspective, Terada's work is essential for the renewal of critical thought in our day

"In Humoring the Body, Gail Kern Paster proposes a new way of interpreting the emotions of the early modern stage so that readers may recover some of this historical particularity." "Using notions drawn from humoral medical theory to untangle passages from important moral treatises, medical texts, natural histories, and major Shakespearean plays, Paster identifies a historical phenomenology in the language of affect by underscoring the significance of the four humors as the language of embodied emotion. Beginning with an overview of the differences between early modern behavioral theory and the models of mind-body relations dominant in post-Enlightenment thought, Humoring the Body goes on to consider the relationship among the body, the emotions, and the natural world in Hamlet and Othello; the phenomenon of the melancholy virgin in As You Like It and the opposite phenomenon of choler in The Taming of the Shrew; the representation of animal and human emotion against the backdrop of early modern natural history in Macbeth; and the connection between early modern social and emotional hierarchies. With unmatched acumen, Paster expertly probes how Shakespearean characters experienced rage, pain, and joy in a world in which no distinction existed between physiology and psychology." "A major contribution both to Shakespeare studies and to the history of embodied emotions, Humoring the Body challenges modern readers - steeped in the influence of post-Cartesian abstraction and the disembodiment of human psychology - to reexamine the literal language of embodied emotion in early modern England."--Jacket

    Tone -- Animatedness -- Envy -- Irritation -- Anxiety -- Stuplimity -- Paranoia -- Afterword: on disgust

Envy, irritation, paranoia -- in contrast to powerful and dynamic negative emotions like anger, these noncathartic states of feeling are associated with situations in which action is blocked or suspended. In her examination of the cultural forms to which these affects give rise, Sianne Ngai suggests that these minor and more politically ambiguous feelings become all the more suited for diagnosis the character of late modernity. Along with her inquiry into the aesthetics of unprestigious negative affects such as irritation, envy, and disgust, Ngai examines a racialized affect called "animatedness" and a paradoxical synthesis of shock and boredom called "stuplimity." She explores the politically equivocal work of these affective concepts in the cultural contexts where they seem most at stake, from academic feminist debates to the Harlem Renaissance, from late twentieth-century American poetry to Hollywood film and network television. Through readings of Herman Melville, Nella Larsen, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Hitchcock, Gertrude Stein, Ralph Ellison, John Yau, and Bruce Andrews, among others, Ngai shows how art turns to ugly feelings as a site for interrogating its own suspended agency in the affirmative culture of a market society, where art is tolerated as essentially unthreatening. Ngai mobilizes the aesthetics of ugly feelings to investigate not only ideological and representational dilemmas in literature -- with a particular focus on those inflected by gender and race -- but also blind spots in contemporary literary studies, media and cultural studies, feminist studies, and aesthetic theory
