    The Sculpted Word not only provides the fullest treatment yet of Keats's use of ekphrasis - a trope by which writer translate visual compositions into words - but also places the poems within their literary, cultural, and historical contexts. Grant F. Scott observes that in Keats we often feel that we are wandering through a museum with a particularly eloquent and subtle guide. On one level, the guide's efforts to capture such visual images as engraved gems, landscape paintings, marbles, and urns represent an attempt to defeat the dominion of the image by writing it into language. On a deeper level, Scott suggests, ekphrasis presents Keats with psychological issues that have less to do with aesthetics than anxieties over such issues as cultural heritage, poetic tradition, and gender identity. "Everywhere in ekphrasis studies," he argues, "we encounter the language of subterfuge, of conspiracy; there is something taboo about moving across media, even as there is something profoundly liberating."

    What, in apparently pictorial poetry, do words--can words--represent? Conversely, how can words in a poem be picturable? After decades of reading and thinking about the nature and function of literary representation, Murray Krieger here develops his most systematic theoretical statement out of answers to such questions. Ekphrasis is his account of the continuing debates over meaning in language from Plato to the present. Krieger sees the modernist position as the logical outcome of these debates but argues that more recent theories radically question the political and aesthetic assumptions of the modernists and the 2,000-year tradition they claim to culminate. Krieger focuses on ekphrasis--the literary representation of visual art, real or imaginary--a form at least as old as its most famous example, the shield of Achilles verbally invented in the Iliad. He argues that the "ekphrastic principle" has remained enduringly problematic in that it reflects the resistant paradoxes of representation in words. As he examines the conflict between spatial and temporal, between vision-centered and word-centered metaphors, Krieger reveals how literary theory has been shaped by the attempts and the deceptive failures of language to do the job of the "natural sign." "What is being described in ekphrasis is both a miracle and a mirage: a miracle because a sequence of actions filled with befores and afters such as language alone can trace seems frozen into an instant's vision, but a mirage because only the illusion of such an impossible picture can be suggested by the poem's words. .. We may see it as the poem's miracle, and that seeing is our mirage. This peculiar--and paradoxical--jointly produced experience of ekphrasis allows it to function as the consummate example of the verbal art, the ultimate shield beyond shields."

    This major study of Wordsworth, Auden, and Larkin proposes that we read the history of contemporary poetry as the history of a war between words and images. This book argues that the desire for transparent clear poetry, in the 19th and 20th centuries, led poets to try to appropriate the powers of the image: the main trope they used was ekphrasis, a written description of a work of art. But the relationship between the arts was less a marriage than a rape. These poets feared the wordless power of the other they described. They narcissistically created these images with the rhetoric of possession, domination, violence, or entombment.

    This major study of Wordsworth, Auden, and Larkin proposes that we read the history of contemporary poetry as the history of a war between words and images. This book argues that the desire for transparent clear poetry, in the 19th and 20th centuries, led poets to try to appropriate the powers of the image: the main trope they used was ekphrasis, a written description of a work of art. But the relationship between the arts was less a marriage than a rape. These poets feared the wordless power of the other they described. They narcissistically created these images with the rhetoric of possession, domination, violence, or entombment.

    Literary Realism and the Ekphrastic Tradition examines representative texts and the theories of realism upon which they are based. It studies the foundations of these theories in the philosophies of language contemporaneous with them. Beginning with Adamicism, Mack Smith looks at the way humanist, rationalist, empiricist, Kantian, positivist, and poststructuralist theories of language are textually dramatized. He considers the cultural and personal influences that affect historical notions of realism and reality. He also demonstrates the rhetorical basis of realism by considering a mimetic device used by novelists in rendering a faithful version of reality - ekphrasis, the narrative description of a work of art. Smith seeks a middle ground between the extremes of theory and interpretation, discourse and reality, and textualism and history, thus making an important contribution to the revaluation of literary studies.

    The Sculpted Word not only provides the fullest treatment yet of Keats's use of ekphrasis - a trope by which writer translate visual compositions into words - but also places the poems within their literary, cultural, and historical contexts. Grant F. Scott observes that in Keats we often feel that we are wandering through a museum with a particularly eloquent and subtle guide. On one level, the guide's efforts to capture such visual images as engraved gems, landscape paintings, marbles, and urns represent an attempt to defeat the dominion of the image by writing it into language. On a deeper level, Scott suggests, ekphrasis presents Keats with psychological issues that have less to do with aesthetics than anxieties over such issues as cultural heritage, poetic tradition, and gender identity. "Everywhere in ekphrasis studies," he argues, "we encounter the language of subterfuge, of conspiracy; there is something taboo about moving across media, even as there is something profoundly liberating."
