    Abstract ; The essay centers on the relationship between Ernest Hemingway and Adriana Ivancich. When the writer met the then eighteen year old girl in Venice in 1948 he was nearly 50 years old, depressed and in a creative crisis. Since 1940 he had not published anything serious. The platonic love story renewed his spirits. He overcame his writers block. The relationsship inspired the novel "Across the River and into the Trees" and to a lesser degree "The Old Man and the Sea". For five years the affair dominated Hemingway's emotional life, culminating in Adriana's several months long stay on his finca in Cuba. The essay follows the influence Adriana had on his writings and his personal life. Both Ernest and Adriana were left with a lasting mark. Adriana could never free herself of the father figure that overshadowed her life. Both the author and his muse ended in suicide.

    Abstract ; The essay centers on the strange relationship between Ernest Hemingway and Adriana Ivancich. When the writer met the eighteen year old girl in Venice in 1948 he was nearly 50 years old, depressed and in a creative crisis. Since 1940 he had not published anything serious. The platonic love story renewed his spirits. He was again able to write. The relationship inspired the novel “Across the River and into the Trees” and to a lesser extent “The Old Man and the Sea”. For five years the affair dominated Hemingway’s emotional life, culminating in Adriana’s several months long visit to Cuba. The essay follows the influence Adriana had on his writings and on his personal life. Both Ernest and Adriana were left with a lasting mark.     This paper investigates why the US economic embargo against Cuba is still in place, despite its lack of effectiveness towards the stated objectives of the US government. An explanatory approach with two theoretical frameworks from economics and political science is applied. The paper explores the assumption that the embargo is not in place to achieve a systemic change in Cuba, but rather because it satisfies certain interest groups in the US. An article with similar methodology from 1997 is updated, and the strength of established interest groups is re-evaluated. It is concluded that US interest groups supporting the maintenance of the sanctions against Cuba have significantly weakened since 1997. Additionally, the general US population's support for the embargo, while already weak in 1997, has further weakened and made a rapprochement of the US toward Cuba, especially under a Democratic Presidency, increasingly likely.

    "Repeatedly and powerfully throughout Cuban history the mulata, a woman of mixed racial identity features prominently in Cuban visual and performative culture. Tracing the figure, Alison Fraunhar looks at the representation and performance in both elite and popular culture. She also tracks how characteristics associated with these women have accrued across the Atlantic world. Widely understood to embody the bridge between European subject and African other, the mulata contains the sensuality attributed to Africans in a body more closely resembling the European ideal of beauty. This symbol bears far-reaching implications, with shifting, contradictory cultural meanings in Cuba. Fraunhar explores these complex paradigms, how, why, and for whom the image was useful, and how it was both subverted and asserted from the colonial period to the present. From the early seventeenth century through Cuban independence in 1899 up to the late revolutionary era, Fraunhar illustrates the ambiguous figure's role in nationhood, citizenship, and commercialism. She analyzes images including key examples of nineteenth century graphic arts, avant-garde painting and magazine covers of the Republican era, cabaret and film performance and contemporary iterations of gender. Fraunhar's study stands out for attending to the phenomenon of mulataje not only in elite production such as painting, but also popular forms: popular theater, print culture, later films, and other media where stereotypes take hold.     Many feel that individualism, and the security it demands, define democracy and freedom. This belief is characteristic of the attitude that thinkers from John Dewey to Michel Foucault have criticized as "liberalist." In actuality, we share intimate associations with one another through contacts established by our bodies and even by language. In Queering Cold War Poetry, Eric Keenaghan offers queer theory, queer studies, and literary theory a new political and conceptual language for reevaluating past and present high valuations of individualism and security. He examines four Cold War poets from Cuba and the United States—Wallace Stevens, José Lezama Lima, Robert Duncan, and Severo Sarduy. These writers, who lived in an era when homosexuals were regarded as outsiders or even security threats, offer critiques of nationalism and liberalism. In their struggles against state and cultural mandates that foreclosed positive estimations of vulnerability, Stevens, Lezama, Duncan, and Sarduy radically revised ethics and identity in their day. Their work exemplifies how much modernist poetry disseminates experiences of differences that challenge prevailing attitudes about individuals' relationships to one another and to their nations. Through studies of Cuban and U.S. lyric and poetics, Queering Cold War Poetry clears the way for imagining what it means to belong to a passionate and compassionate citizenry which celebrates vulnerability, searches for difference in itself and each of its constituent individuals, and identifies less with a nation than with a global community.
