    Susumu Yamaguchi In recent years there has been a wealth of new research in cognition, particularly in relation to supporting theoretical constructs about how cognitions are formed, processed, reinforced, and how they then affect behavior. Many of these theories have arisen and been tested in geographic isolation. It remains to be seen whether theories that purport to describe cognition in one culture will equally prove true in other cultures. The Handbook of Motivation and Cognition Across Cultures is the first book to look at these theories specifically with culture in mind. The book investigates universal truths about motivation and cognition across culture, relative to theories and findings indicating cultural differences. Coverage includes the most widely cited researchers in cognition and their theories- as seen through the looking glass of culture. The chapters include self-regulation by Tory Higgins, unconscious thought by John Bargh, attribution theory by Bernie Weiner, and self-verification by Bill Swann, among others.     Die uralte Frage, ob metaphorisches Denken rational oder irrational ist, welche Rolle Metaphern in der menschlichen Kognition spielen, welche Funktion sie für kreative Prozesse haben, hat durch Theorien und empirische Studien aus der kognitiven Linguistik einen ungeahnten Auftrieb bekommen. Angeregt durch viele interessante Ergebnisse der jüngeren Metaphernforschung, ist das Thema Metapher inzwischen zu einem >hot topic< in verschiedenen Wissenschaften avanciert. Der vorliegende Band bietet einen aktuellen interdisziplinären Überblick über konzeptionelle und methodische Fragestellungen, wie sie die gegenwärtige Metaphernforschung in Wissenssoziologie, Linguistik, Psychologie und Psychotherapie umtreibt. Heute wissen wir, dass keine Wissenschaft ohne Metaphern auskommt. Dass es auch und gerade in den Naturwissenschaften - die immer rationale, sprich metaphernfreie Territorien sein wollten - nur so von Metaphern wimmelt, springt dem Unvoreingenommenen sofort ins Auge. Insofern ist der militante analytische Reflex gegen Metaphern selbst irrational, lebt doch nicht nur die Poesie, die Literatur von Ver-Dichtungen, sondern auch alle sich an vorgeblich rationale Standards haltende Wissenschaft. Der sich gegenwärtig durchsetzenden transdisziplinären Einsicht, dass Metaphern als handlungs- und erkenntnisleitende Modelle fungieren, die Wirklichkeiten erzeugen und etablierte Glaubens- bzw. Begriffssysteme modifizieren, ist dieser Band gewidmet. Hans Rudi Fischer, Dr. phil., geb. 1952. Studium der Psychologie und Philosophie.     Use your imagination! The demand is as important as it is confusing. What is the imagination? What is its value? Where does it come from? And where is it going in a time when even the obscene mseems overdone and passé?This book takes up these questions and argues for the centrality of imagination in humanmcognition. It traces the development of the imagination in Kant’s critical philosophy (particularly the Critique of Aesthetic Judgment) and claims that the insights of Kantian aesthetic theory, especially concerning the nature of creativity, common sense, and genius, influenced the development of nineteenth-century American philosophy.The book identifies the central role of the imagination in the philosophy of Peirce, a role often overlooked in analytic treatments of his thought. The final chapters pursue the observation made by Kant and Peirce that imaginative genius is a type of natural gift (ingenium) and must in some way be continuous with the creative force of nature. It makes this final turn by way of contemporary studies of metaphor, embodied cognition, and cognitive neuroscience
