This study focuses on the uses of the grammatical concept of etymologia in primarily Latin writings from the early Middle Ages. Etymologia is a fundamental procedure and discursive strategy in the philosophy and analysis of language in early medieval Latin grammar, as well as in Biblical exegesis, encyclopedic writing, theology, and philosophy. Read through the frame of poststructuralist analysis of discourse and the philosophy of science, the procedure of the ars grammatica are interpreted as overlapping genres (commentary, glossary, encyclopedia, exegesis) which use different verbal or extraverbal criteria to explain the origins and significations of words and which establish different epistemological frames within which an etymological account of language is situated. The study also includes many translations of heretofore untranslated passages from Latin grammatical and exegetical writings.

"This book aims to offer a unified historical treatment of all that is usually understood as "ancient scholarship" or "ancient philology" and is the first modern work to cover a period from the beginnings to the fall of Byzantium after John Edwin Sandys' work published between 1903-1908. The field "ancient scholarship" includes the exegesis of Greek authors, the editing of their texts, orderly collections of materials useful for exegetical purposes - such as lexeis, onomatologies, collections of antiquarian materials et similia -, the study of grammar, reflection on language, and everything that can be linked to this sphere, that is to say literature and the instruments for interpreting it. If it is hard today to imagine such a work being undertaken by a single scholar, it is worth underlining the benefits offered by a volume with multiple expert voices in a field so complex and multiform. The book is based on the four historiographical chapters of Brill's Companion to Ancient Greek Scholarship (2015), which have been enlarged, updated and rethought"--

Judith Sloman argues that the collections of translation that Dryden produced or contributed to are unified works of literature, not just miscellaneous collections. Through his selection of passages, through his use of language, and through changes and new emphases in the passages he translated Dryden could express his personality and convictions. In this book the author is therefore concerned in part with the connection between personality and art and in part with the political, religious, and literary context in which Dryden worked. Although Fables receives most emphasis, Ovid’s Epistles, Miscellany Poems, Sylvae, Examen Peticum, and the Aenesis are also examined in some detail. Dryden has a re-creative approach to translation, integrating groups of short poems into a whole with epic force. Just as multiplicity and complexity were facts of Dryden’s character and situation, they are characteristic of his composite poems, which create a unified and integrated whole out of a multiplicity of parts. Fables is thus not a unique entity in Dryden’s canon but the conclusion of a pattern that can be traced through his entire career as translator and poet

"Classical Rhetoric in English, 1650-1800 features English translations of the era's most cherished Greek and Roman orators, rhetorical philosophers, and rhetorical critics. The publication history reveals how a distinctive British canon emerged from selected works by Plato, Isocrates, Demosthenes, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Cicero, Seneca, Quintilian, Tacitus and Longinus. Works by these ten authors, especially Cicero and Longinus, were widely disseminated, becoming key texts in the formation of British rhetorical culture. At the core of the volume, annotated selections offer the twenty-first century reader a sampling of these classical rhetorical works in translation. The glossary of rhetorical criticism elucidates the now archaic meanings of words that enabled citizens to communicate their moral and rhetorical taste"-- Intro -- Contents -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- Figures and Tables -- Part 1. This is the first book to bring together the most recent scholarship on politeness and impoliteness in Ancient Greek and Latin, signalling both its universal and its culture-specific traits. Leading scholars analyse texts by canonical classical authors (including Plato, Cicero, Euripides, and Plautus), as well as non-literary sources, to provide glimpses into the courtesy and rudeness of Greek and Latin speakers. A wide range of interdisciplinary approaches is adopted, namely pragmatics, conversation analysis, and computational linguistics. With its extensive introduction, the volume introduces readers to one of the most dynamic fields of Linguistics, while demonstrating that it can serve as an innovative tool in philological readings of classical texts"--

Preface -- Coming late to Latin : Wilfred Owen, John Hollander -- 'A marvel of metrical disruptions' : the Alcaic strophe itself -- 'Blossom again on a colder isle' : Mary Sideny, Alfred Tennyson -- 'The same, but not the same' : Tennyson's In memoriam stanza -- 'The ear grows dissatisfied' : Robert Bridges, W.H. Auden -- Afterword : From inheritance to quarry: the Alcaic in postmodernity. "This book reveals how a remarkable ancient Greek and Latin poetic form -- the Alcaic metre -- found its way into English poetry, and continues shaping the imagination of poets today. English poets have always admired the extraordinary beauty and intricacy of the Alcaic stanza (Tennyson called it 'the grandest of all measures') and their inventive responses to the ancient Alcaic have generated remarkable innovations in the rhythms, sounds, and shapes of modern poetry. This is the first book-length study of this neglected strand of English literary history and classical reception. Attending closely to the rhythm and texture of their verses, John Talbot reveals surprising connections between English poets across five centuries, among them Mary Shelley, Milton, Marvell, Tennyson, Edward Fitzgerald, Wilfred Owen, W. H. Auden, and Donald Hall. He gives special attention to a flourishing of English Alcaics during the late 20th and 21st centuries, and what it suggests about the changing place of classics and poetic form in contemporary culture"--

This Element surveys transmissions of ancient Greek and Latin texts into anglophone literatures, often straddling boundaries between translational responsibility and adaptive, re-creative textual practices. Attention to manifestations of and reasons for versioning, retranslation, hybridity, and translation as experiment, compels an introductory discussion of evolving tendencies of classical reception; with particular dispositions relating to a sociocultural context such as that of the United States observed in Section 3. The role paratexts play in the dialogue between scholarship, literary art, and performance, is the focus of Section 4, while Section 2 presents readers with a range of English responses to Homer. Creativity through sites and positions of translation is a defining feature of the workings of literary traditions; and of antiquity and modernity, in constant dialogue. This Element explores numerous textual manifestations and reasons for invention, along with integrations of thinking on classical translation over the centuries, helping shape present-day translation studies.

Translation presents a multi-layered process which transforms both the language and culture of the translator and the perception of the language and culture of what is translated. The discussion about the extent to which the individual form and culturally alien content of literary texts allows them to be translated took on a new quality in Germany around 1800 - particularly in connection with ancient literature; many of the questions raised at that time still influence the discourse of translation theory today. The volume presents a collection of papers examining translation as exemplars of he

This book concerns the way we read--or rather, imagine we are listening to--ancient Greek and Latin poetry. Through clear and penetrating analysis Mark Edwards shows how an understanding of the effects of word order and meter is vital for appreciating the meaning of classical poetry, composed for listening audiences. The first of four chapters examines Homer's emphasis of certain words by their positioning; a passage from the Iliad is analyzed, and a poem of Tennyson illustrates English parallels. The second considers Homer's techniques of disguising the break in the narrative when changing a scene's location or characters, to maintain his audience's attention. In the third we learn, partly through an English translation matching the rhythm, how Aeschylus chose and adapted meters to arouse listeners' emotions. The final chapter examines how Latin poets, particularly Propertius, infused their language with ambiguities and multiple meanings. An appendix examines the use of classical meters by twentieth-century American and English poets. Based on the author's Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 1998, this book will enrich the appreciation of classicists and their students for the immense possibilities of the languages they read, translate, and teach. Since the Greek and Latin quotations are translated into English, it will also be welcomed by non-classicists as an aid to understanding the enormous influence of ancient Greek and Latin poetry on modern Western literature.

This rich collection of essays by an international group of scholars explores commentaries in many different languages on ancient Latin and Greek texts. The commentaries discussed range from the ancient world to the twentieth century. Together, the chapters contribute to the dialogue between two vibrant and developing fields of study: the history of scholarship and the history of the book. The volume pays particular attention to individual commentaries, national traditions of commentary, the part played by commentaries in the reception of classical texts, and the role of printing and publishing. The material form of commentaries is also considered-including how they are advertised and their accompanying illustrations-as well as their role in education. Both academic texts and books written for schools are surveyed Form and content / Christina S. Kraus (Yale) and C.A. Stray (Swansea). Part 1 : Individuals: commentaries and modern commentators.
