The »The Choreographic Toolbox« provides the building blocks for the contemporary practice of choreography. It came into being in collaboration with internationally renowned choreographers, who brought their experience gathered through their individual artistic projects. The toolbox presents a broad spectrum of contemporary choreographic work methods, and is guided by the idea of creating spaces of possibility for a choreographic praxis. »The Choreographic Toolbox: The Book« carries over the open toolbox system into a book format, in combination with digitally accessible materials. The book gathers practice-oriented modules on the topics »Generating«, »Form Giving«, »Ways of Playing«, »Composition« and »Collaboration«, as well as an essay on contemporary choreography and interviews with Jonathan Burrows, Nik Haffner, Thomas Kampe, Martin Nachbar, Jochen Roller, Anna Huber and Hubert Machnik, who visually illustrate their individual ways of working in exemplary fashion. Together with the digitally accessible practice methods, »The Choreographic Toolbox: The Book« delivers inspiration for experienced choreographers and dancers, and for all those involved with theater, performance, or with choreographic processes and productions in therapeutic settings. It also makes the tools for an experimental, playful encounter with movement and dance available to all those who have little experience with choreography to date

'Gestural Imaginaries' offers a new interpretation of European modernist dance by addressing it as guiding medium in a vibrant field of gestural culture that ranges across art and philosophy. Taking further Cornelius Castoriadis's concept of the social imaginary, it explores this imaginary's embodied forms. Close readings of dances, photographs, and literary texts are juxtaposed with discussions of gestural theory by thinkers including Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, and Aby Warburg.

Contemporary PerforMemory looks at dance works created in the 21st century by choreographers identifying as Afro-European, Jewish, Black, Palestinian, and Taiwanese-Chinese-American. It explores how contemporary dance-makers engage with historical traumas such as the Shoah and the Maafa to reimagine how the past is remembered and how the future is anticipated. The new idea of perforMemory arises within a lively blend of interdisciplinary theory, interviews, performance analysis, and personal storytelling. Scholar and artist Layla Zami traces unexpected pathways, inviting the reader to move gracefully across disciplines, histories, and geographies

Digital technologies offer the possibility of capturing, storing, and manipulating movement, abstracting it from the body and transforming it into numerical information. In Moving without a Body, Stamatia Portanova considers what really happens when the physicality of movement is translated into a numerical code by a technological system. Drawing on the radical empiricism of Gilles Deleuze and Alfred North Whitehead, she argues that this does not amount to a technical assessment of software's capacity to record motion but requires a philosophical rethinking of what movement itself is, or can become. Discussing the development of different audiovisual tools and the shift from analog to digital, she focuses on some choreographic realizations of this evolution, including works by Loie Fuller and Merce Cunningham. Throughout, Portanova considers these technologies and dances as ways to think -- rather than just perform or perceive -- movement. She distinguishes the choreographic thought from the performance: a body performs a movement, and a mind thinks or choreographs a dance. Similarly, she sees the move from analog to digital as a shift in conception rather than simply in technical realization. Analyzing choreographic technologies for their capacity to redesign the way movement is thought, Moving without a Body offers an ambitiously conceived reflection on the ontological implications of the encounter between movement and technological systems.

In the arts, digital media cultures have led to the formation of novel configurations that can essentially be identified as relationships of exchange for heterogeneous fields of praxis. Artistic processes have developed which possess neither a secured institutional location, nor a media framework. Instead, the conditions of their production and experience are characterized by movements of translating, of circulating, of intervening and grouping. From various perspectives (film, dance, theater and media studies), the contributors to this volume develop methodologies and concepts for describing these process-oriented aesthetic approaches.

Scholar and artist Layla Zami traces unexpected pathways, inviting the reader to move gracefully across disciplines, histories, and geographies.

The human shadow in a digital world - the relation between mankind and technology explored anew on the basis of the visual and performing arts

For this first time, this book presents an comprehensive poetics of movement as 'écriture corporelle': dance becomes perceptible as an ephemeral kind of writing and illegible script occurring in space.

Long description: Voguing-Performances haben Eingang in Tanzinszenierungen gefunden.

Dance practice is gaining just as much in importance in research as it is becoming a kind of research in itself. Choreography, improvisation and exploration are expanding conventional discursive methods of knowledge generation and transfer to incorporate aesthetic dimensions of movement, corporeality, sensuality and emotion. This volume, with its interdisciplinary structure, provides an insight into the multi-faceted trend of research approaches that have either developed directly from, or refer back to, dance practice. Using projects as concrete examples, the contributions in this volume present theoretical and methodological foundations and historical connections advances in knowledge Tanzpraxis gewinnt in der Forschung ebenso an Bedeutung wie sie selbst zur Forschung avanciert.
