    ger: Kurzfassung DeutschIn der ersten Hälfte des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts fasste eine neue Form die Lebensgeschichte eines Protagonisten zu erzählen in der englischen Literatur Fuß; der sogenannte Entwicklungsroman, der sich mit der Reifung eines jungen Menschen auseinandersetzt. Sein Hauptaugenmerk liegt darin darzustellen wie der/die ProtagonistIn seinen/ihren Platz im Leben und in der Gesellschaft findet. Ausgehend von Goethes Ur-Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre und dessen Übersetzung durch Thomas Carlyle, wurde das Genre der Englischen Leserschaft nähergebracht, fand jedoch im Viktorianischen England eigene Ausformungen.Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die individuelle Entwicklung der ProtagonistInnen in vier ausgewählten Viktorianischen Romanen zu analysieren, sowie Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede aufzuzeigen. Nach einer generellen Einführung zum Entwicklungsroman, die auch die wichtigsten Merkmale dieses Genres hervorheben will, soll anhand von Charles Dickens David Copperfield und Great Expectations sowie Charlotte Brontës Jane Eyre und Villette gezeigt werden welche Veränderungen die Hauptcharaktere im Laufe ihres Lebens durchmachen und in welchen Bereichen Entwicklung stattfindet. Des Weiteren soll ergründet werden, wodurch Entwicklungsprozesse ausgelöst werden.Alle behandelten Romane sind fiktionale Autobiographien die von einem Ich-Erzähler, der gleichzeitig der Protagonist ist, wiedergegeben werden. Dennoch gibt es merkliche die Erzähltechnik betreffende Unterschiede, die ebenfalls in der Arbeit aufgezeigt werden sollen. Am Ende der Analyse eines jeden Romans werden die für den jeweiligen Protagonisten relevanten Hauptfaktoren der Entwicklung in einer abschließenden Zusammenfassung dargelegt um dadurch Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zu verdeutlichen, da die Entwicklungsidee in jedem der vier Romane in einzigartiger Weise ausgeführt wird. eng: Kurzfassung EnglischIn the first half of the nineteenth century, a new form of narrating the life-story of a novel?s protagonist was introduced to English literature; the so-called novel of development, which is concerned with the maturation of a young person. Its main focus lies in presenting how the protagonist finds his/her place in life and in society. The genre is said to have had its start with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe?s model-Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister?s Lehrjahre and was brought to English audiences by Thomas Carlyle?s translation of this novel. However, it was realised differently in Victorian England.The aim of this thesis is to provide an analysis of the individual development of the protagonists in four selected Victorian novels as well as to point out similarities and differences. After a general introduction to the novel of development, which is also intended to show the main criteria of this genre, Charles Dickens? David Copperfield and Great Expectations as well as Charlotte Brontë?s Jane Eyre and Villette will be analysed with regard to what kind of changes the protagonists undergo and what parts of their lives these changes affect. Triggers for the developmental process will as well be examined.All of the four novels analysed are fictional autobiographies featuring a first person narrator who is also the protagonist, but noticeable differences concerning the narrative techniques can be found, which will be pointed out in the thesis. At the end of the analysis of each novel the main factors concerning the protagonists? development will be outlined in order to stress similarities and differences, as the idea of development is rendered in each of the four novels in a unique way.

    ger: Die weiblichen Hauptcharaktere der Brontë-Schwestern sind ein beliebtes Studienfeld für Literaturwissenschaftler, Feministen und Historiker. Diese außergewöhnlichen Frauenfiguren ringen, kämpfen, dienen unterwürfig und sehnen sich zur gleichen Zeit nach Unabhängigkeit. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit analysiert die komplexen Charaktere von Jane in Jane Eyre, Helen in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall und Catherine sen. und Catherine jun. in Wuthering Heights.Diese Studie ist unterteilt in drei Teile. Der erste beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle und dem Idealbild der Frauen der viktorianischen Zeit. Anschließend folgt eine Diskussion der Darstellung von Frauen in den Romanen der Brontë-Schwestern. Auf der anderen Seite werden auch die oft harte Realität und der tatsächliche Umgang mit Frauen betrachtet. Zusammenfassend setzt sich dieser Teil mit folgenden Fragen auseinander: inwiefern personifizieren die weiblichen Charakter das viktorianische Ideal und, im Gegensatz dazu, in welcher Weise waren sie skandalös?Das folgende Kapitel lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Heldinnen der Romane und untersucht sie in detaillierter Weise. Wie wird ihre Persönlichkeit geschildert? Worin besteht ihr innerer Konflikt? Wie interagieren sie mit Männern und wie entwickeln sie sich im Zuge der Geschichte? Das sind nur einige der Fragen, die die folgende Analyse bestimmen. Dieser Teil der Arbeit erforscht die Erschaffung der weiblichen Hauptcharaktere und was die Autorinnen mit ihnen aussagen wollten.Der dritte Teil untersucht die Beziehungen der Heldinnen, vor allem mit ihren weiblichen und männlichen Gegenspielern. Nachdem sie einer große Anzahl sehr verschiedener Charaktere begegnen, erscheint es wichtig herauszufinden, wie diese Situationen die Ansichten und die Entwicklung der Heldinnen beeinflussen. Die Hauptquelle für diese Analyse war Françoise Baschs Relative Creatures (1974), das sich einen ganzen Abschnitt mit den Brontës beschäftigt. eng: The Brontës' female protagonists have been a widely investigated topic for literary critics, feminists and historians. Struggling, fighting, serving obediently and on the other hand striving for independence ? these women often appear to be the complete opposite of their creators, at least as far as the authoresses' upbringing, their life in seclusion and their religious and intellectual education would allow us to believe. This thesis analyzes the complex characters of Jane in Jane Eyre, Helen in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Catherine sen. and Catherine jun. in Wuthering Heights. This paper is divided into three sections. The first part deals with the different roles and ways of perceiving Victorian women leading us to a discussion of the Brontës' presentations of womanhood. This chapter offers an investigation of ideals of womanhood prevalent in Victorian Britain and also provides an account of the reality women were facing. To round off, this section deals with the following questions: to what extent do their female protagonists personify Victorian ideals and, in contrast, in which ways were they scandalous?The subsequent chapter draws the attention to the novels' heroines in more detail. How are they characterized? What is their inner conflict? How do they interact with males and how do they develop throughout the novel? These are just some of the research questions that form the following analysis. This section aims at exploring the way these female protagonists were created and what they were meant to reveal. The third part of this thesis examines the heroines' relationships, most of all their female and male counterparts. As they encounter all different kinds of people along their way, it is worth examining how these situations shape the protagonists' attitudes and development. The major source for this investigation was Françoise Basch's book Relative Creatures (1974) which includes an entire section on the Brontës' heroines.

    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht feministische Aspekte in Charlotte Brontës Jane Eyre und Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea und analysiert, wie diese Inhalte in zwei Filmadaptionen der genannten Werke vermittelt werden. Die Protagonistinnen beider Romane repräsentieren Frauen, deren Leben durch die patriarchale Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts bestimmt wird. Hinsichtlich Brontës Jane Eyre wird der Fokus auf die Ungleichheit zwischen Jane und ihrem Arbeitgeber Edward Rochester gelegt und ihr Weg in die Selbstbestimmtheit nachgezeichnet. Jene wird nicht nur durch den Tod von Rochesters Frau Bertha Mason erreicht, welche ein rechtliches sowie symbolisches Hindernis für die Heirat der beiden darstellte, sondern auch durch Janes neu erlangte finanzielle Unabhängigkeit verbunden mit dem Machtverlust Rochesters. Des weiteren wird die Figur der Bertha Mason diskutiert und der Schluss gezogen, dass ihr Wahnsinn Folge der verdrehten gesellschaftlichen Auffassung passiver Weiblichkeit sein könnte. Dieser Charakter kann nicht einzig als rassistische Darstellung einer geisteskranken Kreolin aufgefasst werden, sondern vielmehr auch als Alter Ego der jungen Jane, oder als Frau, welche einer patriarchalen Gesellschaft anheimfällt. In der Analyse des Films ergibt sich, dass die Darstellung Bertha s zwar von Brontës Beschreibung abweicht, es aber durchaus schafft, ihr feministisches Gedankengut in Bezug auf Gleichberechtigung, Unabhängigkeit und Emotionalität zu vermitteln. Danach liegt der Fokus auf Wide Sargasso Sea, dem Prequel Jane Eyres und den Hintergründen der Verwandlung Antoinettes in Bertha Mason. Die Arbeit zeigt, wie ihr Ehemann sie durch finanzielle Abhängigkeit dominiert und ihre rebellische, gleichwohl fragile Natur als geisteskrank verkennt. Abschließend zeigt die Analyse des dazugehörigen Films, dass dieser als erfolgreiche Adaption bezüglich Abbildung der Persönlichkeit der Figuren sowie der männlichen Unterdrückung, welcher Antoinette begegnet, gesehen werden kann. eng: This diploma thesis explores feminist aspects in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea and takes a look at how two of their filmic adaptations manage to convey these issues to the viewership. The protagonists of both novels represent women whose lives are dominated by the patriarchal society of the 19th century. In regard to Jane Eyre, the focus is put on the existing inequality between Jane and her master Edward Rochester. It highlights the female protagonist's path to equality, which is achieved not only by the death of Rochester’s wife Bertha Mason who has posed a legal as well as symbolical impediment to their marriage but also by Jane’s newly gained financial independence and Rochester's loss of power. Further, the thesis deals with Bertha Mason’s depiction in the novel and comes to the conclusion that her madness might have been a result of the distorted notion of passive femininity in Victorian England. It also shows that Bertha's character can not only be interpreted as a racist portrayal of an insane Creole but also as Jane’s alter-ego, or as a representation of a deviant woman who falls victim to patriarchal society. In addition, the analysis of the film demonstrates that although Bertha’s depiction deviates from the novel, the film version captures Brontë’s feminist spirit by considering the issues of equality, independence and emotionality. The subsequent chapter puts the focus on Jane Eyre’s prequel Wide Sargasso Sea and the reasons that lead to Antoinette’s transformation into ‘the madwoman in the attic,’ Bertha Mason. The thesis reveals that her husband gains control over her life by making her financially dependent and by misinterpreting her rebellious and fragile personality as madness. The final movie analysis shows that the film version can be regarded as a successful adaptation when it comes to the portrayal of the protagonists’ personalities as well as the male oppression Antoinette has to cope with.

    ger: Viktorianische Romane wie Jane Eyre, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, David Copperfield, Middlemarch und Cranford zählen zu den Klassikern der englischen Literatur und erfreuen sich nach wie vor einer breiten Leserschaft. Während die Romane zunächst durch ihre romantischen Handlungsstränge und dramatischen Geschehnisse bestechen, gibt es verschiedene Aspekte, die sich erst bei genauerer Lektüre und Analyse erschließen. Einer dieser Aspekte ist die Vermittlung von Konzepten von Weiblichkeit und /oder Männlichkeit, die sich durch das Konzept Gender zusammenfassen lassen. Der Aspekt Gender steht auch im Zentrum meiner Diplomarbeit, die sich nicht nur den viktorianischen Texten widmet, sondern auch ausgewählten zeitgenössischen Adaptionen dieser Romane. Durch eine vergleichende Untersuchung von Roman und zeitgenössischer Filmadaption kann besonders deutlich gezeigt werden, wie Gender-Aspekte, die bereits von Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, George Eliot und Elizabeth Gaskell in unterschiedlichster Form aufgegriffen wurden, weitertradiert und/oder kritisch unterminiert werden. eng: Victorian novels such as Jane Eyre, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, David Copperfield, Middlemarch and Cranford are considered as some of the most well-known classics of Victorian literature and still reach a broad spectrum of readers. While these novels first attract readers through their romantic story lines and dramatic events, there are, however, other aspects that can only be accessed through the lens of precise reading and analysis. One of these aspects concerns the mediation of femininity and/or masculinity, which can be defined by the concept of gender. The aspect of gender is the major focus of my diploma thesis, which not only deals with Victorian texts, but also with selected contemporary adaptations of these novels. Through a comparative investigation of novels and contemporary film adaptations it can be shown in detail how gender aspects, that have already been incorporated by Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell in various forms, are perpetuated and/or critically undermined.

    ger: Mit der Herrschaft von Königin Victoria und dem parallel verlaufenden Phänomen der Industriellen Revolution hielten zahlreiche Erneuerungen, die beinahe alle Bereiche des sozialen Lebens betrafen, in England Einzug. Aber in Zeiten rapider Veränderung wurde dennoch ein bestimmter gesellschaftlicher Aspekt aufrechterhalten: die niedrige Stellung der Frau in der Gesellschaft. Die Ungerechtigkeiten gegenüber Frauen, die ihren Ursprung im Wesentlichen in der patriarchalen Gesellschaftsstruktur hatten, wurden natürlich auch in der zeitgenössischen Literatur aufgegriffen. Bemerkenswerterweise war ein Großteil der weiblichen Schriftstellerinnen entschlossen, die Formen an Unterdrückung, die vielen Frauen widerfuhr, literarisch aufzuzeigen und zu kritisieren. In zwei (Bildungs-) Romanen der Autorin Charlotte Brontë kommen diese Bestrebungen besonders zur Geltung. Sowohl Jane Eyre als auch Villette stellen beide eine Protagonistin in den Mittelpunkt, die mit den Bürden des damaligen Patriarchats zu kämpfen hat. In dieser Diplomarbeit soll veranschaulicht werden, wie die beiden Heldinnen, Jane Eyre und Lucy Snowe, versuchen, ihrem auferlegten „Schatten-Dasein“ zu entkommen. Des Weiteren soll analysiert werden, auf welche Weise und in welchem Ausmaß soziale und geschlechtsbedingte Einschränkungen die Persönlichkeitsbildung der beiden Heldinnen in Jane Eyre und Villette beeinflussen. Denn obwohl beide Hauptcharaktere sehr ähnlichen Bedingungen ausgesetzt sind, unterscheidet sich ihre Bewältigung der Hürden signifikant. eng: The reign of Queen Victorian and the contemporaneously proceeding phenomenon of the Industrial Revolution were accompanied by reforms which affected almost every area of the English social life. Yet, in these times of rapid transformation one particular aspect of society, however, was continuously perpetuated: the low status of the female gender.Naturally, the injustices towards women, which were mainly rooted in the patriarchal structure of society, were dealt with in contemporary literature. Notably, the majority of women writers were determined to illustrate and criticise the implementations of female oppression in their literary works. In two novels (of development) by Charlotte Brontë these endeavours become especially apparent. The stories of Jane Eyre and Villette both centre on a female protagonist, who has to fight the burdens imposed by patriarchy. The aim of this diploma thesis is to demonstrate how the two heroines, Jane Eyre and Lucy Snowe, attempt to escape their predestined “shadow-world”. Furthermore, it will be analysed how and to what extent social and gender boundaries influence the character formation of the protagonists in Jane Eyre and Villette. Because although both main characters are faced with similar conditions, their handling of the situation differs significantly.

    ‘Not I – Kazuo Ishiguro and the Politics of Misrecognition’ takes a closer look at how Ishiguro’s narrators deal with their metaphorical ‘parents’, their literary ancestors from Hamlet to Alfred Prufrock. Ishiguro’s narrators unwittingly express a metafictional concern about their existence in the shadows of English literary history and struggle with an imagined pressure to compete with iconic literary characters. This book traces their narrative anxiety against a variety of other canonical intertexts by William Shakespeare, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, George Eliot and T. S. Eliot and takes a closer look at the narrators’ narrative strategy of repression. Like Walter Benjamin’s angel of history, they all would like to stay, awaken the dead, and make whole what has been smashed through the carefully falsified construction of their stories. These narrators are never fully in control of their own narratives and so they inadvertently betray their own struggle for recognition.

    Charlotte Brontë’s final novel Villette (1853) is associated with ambiguity because of its open ending: Does M. Paul return to narrator-protagonist Lucy Snowe or is he killed in a storm raging on the Atlantic? Taking its famous ending as a starting point, this study explores Villette as a text in which ambiguity is all-pervasive in various ways. Among these is the narrator’s ambivalent attitude toward herself and others, epitomised in her stylistic idiosyncrasies. The links between ambiguity and doubt are explored through an analysis of Lucy’s signature phrase, “I know not,” expressive of her existential doubts and questioning attitude toward the world. The analysis moreover focuses on the motif of the oracle as a traditionally ambiguous utterance, and explores its relevance in the context of the generic tradition of Villette as a fictional autobiography. Another focus is the interplay of figurative and literal levels of meaning in the allegorical episodes, creating ambiguity.
