    In dieser Arbeit wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie sich eine Darstellung des Nichts durch die Darstellung von Etwas vollzieht. Wie Arnold P. Hinchliffe richtig feststellt zerstört das Konzept von Nichts sich selbst, denn es produziert Etwas , dennoch haben wir eine Vorstellung von dem mit Nichts bezeichneten. Diese Arbeit stellt es sich zur Aufgabe die Leerstellen in der Handlung von Samuel Becketts En attendant Godot und Franz Kafkas Der Prozess zu analysieren. Hierfür ist es notwendig verschiedene Motive zu betrachten, die Lücken in ihren Definitionen aufweisen. Es sind diese Leerstellen auf denen gerade die Handlung aufbaut und sie nehmen einen großen Teil dabei ein, die Handlung zum Voranschreiten zu bewegen. Anhand von Becketts En attendant Godot und Kafkas Der Prozess sollen die Darstellungsweisen der nicht vorhandenen Begebenheiten betrachtet und analysiert werden. Das sich äußernde Nicht-sein durch Etwas führt zum Sein der Schriften selbst. Sie thematisieren ihre eigene nicht vorhandene Handlung, eine Leerstelle und handeln eben dadurch von etwas. Sowohl En attendant Godot als auch Der Prozess können infolge dessen als von sich selbst handelnde Schriften gelesen werden, was sich diese Arbeit zum Ziel setzt. Sie sind intratextuell, gehen jedoch auf Grund der Art dieser intratextuellen Darstellung weit über einen bloßen Intratext hinaus. In Becketts En attendant Godot stellt sich das Fehlen einer eigentlichen Handlung sehr deutlich dar. Das Erwartete, das Eintreffen von Godot, bleibt aus. Selbst die Gewissheit der Verabredung und der Existenz Godots verschwindet. Es bleibt nichts außer der Hoffnung der Charaktere, Vladimir und Estragon, die keine herkömmlichen Rollen haben, also eigentlich Nicht-Rollen sind. Vor anderem Hintergrund (dem der Gesetze) stellt sich das Nichts bei Kafkas Prozess dar. Josef K. wird eines Morgens verhaftet, doch die Verhaftung ist keine, die ihn an seiner gewöhnlichen Lebensweise hindert.     Diese Arbeit sucht Antworten auf zwei Fragen: Welche Prozesse steuern die Interaktion zwischen Autor und seinen Lesern, und wie haben sich diese Prozesse im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts möglicherweise verändert? Wir wollen zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen beispielhaft zwei Aspekte der Interaktion zwischen Autor und Leser betrachten, die wir, ausgehend von der vorliegenden Sekundärliteratur, für besonders vielschichtig und relevant halten: Intertextualität und Performativität. Diese Aspekte sollen dann an drei literarischen Beispielen: Henry Jamesens The Turn of the Screw (1898), Samuel Becketts Film (1963) und John Banvilles The Untouchable (1997) durchgearbeitet werden. Sie sollen drei Stationen der literarischen Entwicklung des 20. Jahrhunderts repräsentieren: den Beginn der Moderne, den Beginn der Postmoderne und die heutige Zeit. Im Vergleich der Texte wollen wir die Entwicklung der Beziehung zwischen Autor und Leser über diesen Zeitabschnitt hinweg offen legen. Film bildet sozusagen ein Scharnier zwischen Henry Jamesens und John Banvilles Texten. Im Sinne von Linda Hutcheons (2002 (1989)) Überlegungen zur Charakteristik postmoderner Texte und John Kenny (2006:57), der eine Verwandtschaft von John Banvilles Texten zu denen von Henry James nachweist, kann man The Turn of the Screw durchaus auch als postmodernen, mit The Untouchable sehr verwandten Text lesen.

    In Brian Friel's writing, the distinction between public and private is closely linked to the concepts of home, family, identity and truth. This study examines the characters' excessive introspection and their deep-seated need to disclose their most intimate knowledge and private truths to define who they are and, thus, to oppose dominant discourse or avoid heteronomy. This study begins by investigating how a number of Anglo-Irish writers publicised their characters' private versions of truth thereby illustrating what they perceived to be the space of 'Irishness'. The book then focuses on Friel's techniques of sharing his character's private views to demonstrate how he adopted and adapted these practices in his own oeuvre. As the characters' superficial inarticulateness and their vivid inner selves are repeatedly juxtaposed in Friel's texts, his oeuvre, quintessentially, displays a great unease with the concepts of communication and absolute truth. Mit diesem Buch entwirft Mathias Mayer eine neue Sicht auf Shakespeares dunkelste Tragödie, in der es die Funktion einer Zuschauerrolle zu entdecken gilt: Das Publikum bekommt Vorgänge zu sehen, die in raffinierter Weise vom Zuschauen handeln, von Beobachtung und Teilnahme. Gewalt, Mitleid und Versöhnung werden auf der Bühne gezeigt, aber auch gesehen und kommentiert. Dabei entwickelt sich ein Szenarium von der verweigerten zur gelernten Empathie. Die ästhetische Reaktion gewinnt daraus ein ethisches Profil. Shakespeare reagiert auf den Vorwurf vieler Theaterkritiker seiner Zeit, gerade die Tragödie laufe Gefahr, das Publikum durch seine Sympathielenkung zu fesseln und zu schwächen. Er erschafft im Tragödienverlauf immer wieder Rollen eines Zuschauers, der einer Logik der Einfühlung – im Guten wie im Schlechten – folgt. Sie erweist sich – in den Heideszenen oder der Versöhnung mit Cordelia – als so zwingend, dass diese Einfühlung über die Katastrophe hinaus die reichhaltige »Lear«-Rezeption (von Balzac bis Beckett) prägt.

    Forming a pair with the voice, the gaze is a central structuring element of Samuel Beckett’s creation. And yet it takes the form of a strangely impersonal visual dimension testifying to the absence of an original exchange of gazes capable of founding personal identity and opening up the world to desire. The collapse of conventional reality and the highlighting of seeing devices—eyes, mirrors, windows—point to the absence of a unified representation. While masks and closed spaces show the visible to be opaque and devoid of any beyond, light and darkness, spectres—manifestations without origin—reveal a realm beyond the confines of identity, where nothing provides a mediation with the seen, or sets it within perspective. Finally, Beckett’s use of the audio-visual media deepens his exploration of the irreducibly real part of existence that escapes seeing. This study systematically examines these essential aspects of the visual in Beckett’s creation. The theoretical elaborations of Jacques Lacan—in relation with corresponding developments in the history and philosophy of the visual arts—offer an indispensible framework to understand the imaginary not as representation, but as rooted in the fundamental opacity of existence.

    In Brian Friel's writing, the distinction between public and private is closely linked to the concepts of home, family, identity and truth. This study examines the characters' excessive introspection and their deep-seated need to disclose their most intimate knowledge and private truths to define who they are and, thus, to oppose dominant discourse or avoid heteronomy. This study begins by investigating how a number of Anglo-Irish writers publicised their characters' private versions of truth thereby illustrating what they perceived to be the space of 'Irishness'. The book then focuses on Friel's techniques of sharing his character's private views to demonstrate how he adopted and adapted these practices in his own oeuvre.     Forming a pair with the voice, the gaze is a central structuring element of Samuel Beckett’s creation. And yet it takes the form of a strangely impersonal visual dimension testifying to the absence of an original exchange of gazes capable of founding personal identity and opening up the world to desire. The collapse of conventional reality and the highlighting of seeing devices—eyes, mirrors, windows—point to the absence of a unified representation. While masks and closed spaces show the visible to be opaque and devoid of any beyond, light and darkness, spectres—manifestations without origin—reveal a realm beyond the confines of identity, where nothing provides a mediation with the seen, or sets it within perspective. Finally, Beckett’s use of the audio-visual media deepens his exploration of the irreducibly real part of existence that escapes seeing.This study systematically examines these essential aspects of the visual in Beckett’s creation. The theoretical elaborations of Jacques Lacan—in relation with corresponding developments in the history and philosophy of the visual arts—offer an indispensible framework to understand the imaginary not as representation, but as rooted in the fundamental opacity of existence.

Seitdem jedermann Literatur verfassen darf, mutiert das Problem der Gültigkeit von Geschwätz zum Rechtsproblem. Die Literatur hat zwar als Institution ihre Befugnisse weitgehend eingebüßt; die moderne Literatur teilt jedoch mit dem Geschwätz die Besonderheit, ihr Recht ganz aus eigener Kraft generieren zu können.Autoren wie Blanchot, Beckett, Kafka, Melville und Walser ermächtigen sich so radikal des Geschwätzes, dass ihre Texte auch als theoretische Aussage gedeutet werden müssen.
