Texten dieser Art sind die hier versammelten Fallstudien gewidmet.     "Writing guides teach us to avoid mixed metaphors like 'that wet blanket is a loose cannon', and suggest that we should limit ourselves to one metaphor per paragraph. But clearly this is terrible advice. The 'Tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow' speech in Macbeth packs six metaphors into a few lines, and is considered a literary masterpiece. Scientific descriptions of light and matter necessarily include conflicting metaphors because we don't have a perfect metaphor for these concepts. Whilst it's true that mixed metaphors can sound ignorant or confusing, what we really need is a more nuanced definition of mixed metaphors, and a better system for identifying their benefits and drawbacks in different contexts. In Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse, Karen Sullivan employs findings from linguistics and cognitive science to explore why some mixed metaphors are criticised but similar metaphors are praised. By using Conceptual Metaphor Theory, she demonstrates how, once we understand how metaphoric ideas are put together, we can better appreciate the different ways that metaphors can be mixed, and how audiences are likely to respond to these differences. By analysing over 100 metaphors from politicians, sportspeople, writers, and other public figures, Mixed Metaphors: Their Use and Abuse delineates how mixing occurs and identifies the characteristics that make mixed metaphors annoying, amusing or astounding" --

Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe! Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes aus Kunst, Pädagogik, Politik- und Kulturwissenschaft diskutieren, inwiefern Ambiguitäten in Kunst und Politik strukturähnlich sind und eine pädagogische Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst zugleich demokratische Haltungen bilden kann Biographical note: Ansgar Schnurr (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1977, forscht und lehrt als Professor für Kunstpädagogik an der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich transkultureller Kunstpädagogik, Studien zur ästhetischen Dimension von Diversität und Ungleichheit sowie Schnittstellen und Transferwirkungen zur politischen Bildung. Sabine Dengel (Dr. phil.), geb. 1967, ist wissenschaftliche Referentin für politische und kulturelle Bildung bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung und Leiterin der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur«. Sie hat Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Philosophie an der Universität des Saarlandes studiert und über politische Erziehung im Deutschen Kaiserreich, dem NS-Staat und der DDR promoviert. Ihre inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte liegen in der modernen politischen Theorie, der Theorie politischer und kultureller Bildung, der (historischen) Bildungsforschung sowie der Demokratietheorie. Julia Hagenberg, geb. 1967, Kunsthistorikerin und Pädagogin, leitet die Abteilung Bildung in der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. Die Schwerpunkte ihrer Arbeit und Lehrtätigkeit liegen an der Schnittstelle zwischen Kunstvermittlung und kuratorischer Praxis sowie im Bereich partizipativer Bildungskonzepte und der gesellschaftspolitischen Dimension von Museumsarbeit. Linda Kelch, geb. 1988, hat Politikwissenschaft und Philosophie studiert und ist wissenschaftliche Referentin bei der Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung (bpb) und arbeitet dort in der Projektgruppe »Politische Bildung und Kultur« zur Schnittstelle von kultureller und politischer Bildung sowie zu Phänomenen der Kulturalisierung und Konzepten der transkulturellen Bildung

    Ever since it was first published in 1930, William Empson's Seven Types of Ambiguity has been perceived as a milestone in literary criticism-far from being an impediment to communication, ambiguity now seemed an index of poetic richness and expressive power. Little, however, has been written on the broader trajectory of Western thought about ambiguity before Empson; as a result, the nature of his innovation has been poorly understood.A History of Ambiguity remedies this omission. Starting with classical grammar and rhetoric, and moving on to moral theology, law, biblical exegesis, German philosophy, and literary criticism, Anthony Ossa-Richardson explores the many ways in which readers and theorists posited, denied, conceptualised, and argued over the existence of multiple meanings in texts between antiquity and the twentieth century. This process took on a variety of interconnected forms, from the Renaissance delight in the 'elegance' of ambiguities in Horace, through the extraordinary Catholic claim that Scripture could contain multiple literal-and not just allegorical-senses, to the theory of dramatic irony developed in the nineteenth century, a theory intertwined with discoveries of the double meanings in Greek tragedy. Such narratives are not merely of antiquarian interest: rather, they provide an insight into the foundations of modern criticism, revealing deep resonances between acts of interpretation in disparate eras and contexts. A History of Ambiguity lays bare the long tradition of efforts to liberate language, and even a poet's intention, from the strictures of a single meaning

    Drawing on the arguments that hebel is the thesis of Ecclesiastes as well as Qoheleth’s rhetorical tool, this essay examines hebel’s connection with Qoheleth’s ambiguities and contradictions. Understanding hebel in terms of its basic meaning, that is, vapour, we argue that Qoheleth employs the image as his rhetorical strategy because of its opaque and fluctuating character. Being opaque, hebel is an ideal symbol for delineating phenomena which are ambiguous and hard to define. Coupled with its capacity for infinite change, the opacity allows hebel semantic inexhaustibility, making it a versatile device for describing the fluctuating nature of reality. As everything is opaque and in constant change, Qoheleth cannot offer advice in absolute terms and often ends up making contradictory statements.

    The Description-Experience gap (DE gap) is widely thought of as a tendency for people to act as if overweighting rare events when information about those events is derived from descriptions but as if underweighting rare events when they experience them through a sampling process. While there is now clear evidence that some form of DE gap exists, its causes, exact nature and implications for economic theory remain unclear, for reasons we explain. We present a new experiment which examines in a unified design four distinct causal mechanisms that might drive the DE gap, attributing it respectively to information differences (sampling bias), to a feature of preferences (ambiguity sensitivity) or to aspects of cognition (likelihood representation and memory). Using a model-free approach, we elicit a DE gap similar in direction and size to the literature's average and find that, when each factor is considered in isolation, sampling bias stemming from under-represented rare events is the only significant driver of the gap. Yet, model-mediated analysis reveals the possibility of a smaller DE gap, existing even without information differences. Moreover, this form of analysis of our data indicates that, even when information about them is obtained by sampling, rare events are generally overweighted.

    Existing research has demonstrated carryover effects whereby emotions generated in one context influence decisions in other, unrelated ones. We examine the carryover effect in relation to valuations of risky and ambiguous lotteries with a novel focus on comparing the carryovers arising from a targeted stimulus (designed to elicit a specific emotion) with those arising from a naturalistic stimulus (expected to produce a more complex emotional response). We find carryover effects using both a standard targeted stimulus and a naturalistic one, but they are stronger for the naturalistic stimulus and in the context of ambiguity. These effects are also highly gender-specific with only males being susceptible. To probe the emotional foundations of behaviour, we conduct analysis relating individual self-reports of emotions to incentivised valuation behaviour. Our results cast doubt on the interpretation of some evidence purporting to establish links between specific incidental emotions and risk taking.

    The story of Jael is interpreted in many different ways; the two main ones are that she is a hero to Israel, or she is a deceitful murderer. An incident that occurred in the Cape Flats, South Africa, some years ago throws light on local women’s interpretation of the Jael story. In the contemporary incident, a woman killed her son, but was viewed by women in the community not as a murderer but as a fellow-sufferer. In this study, women in the community and women in prison (some for murder) read the Jael text, act out the story, and share their views of what was happening in the biblical text. It is clear that contemporary women living in a violent community can contribute to a better understanding of the Jael text through their many parallel experiences.

    Observed individual behavior in the presence of ambiguity is characterized by insufficient responsiveness to changes in subjective likelihoods. Such likelihood insensitivity under ambiguity is integral to theoretical models and predictive of behavior in many important domains such as financial decision-making. However, there is little empirical evidence on its causes and determining factors. This paper investigates the role of beliefs in the form of ambiguity perception - the extent to which a decision-maker has difficulties assigning a single probability to each possible event - as a potential determinant. Using an experiment, I exogenously vary the degree of ambiguity while eliciting measures of likelihood insensitivity and ambiguity perception. The results provide strong support for an ambiguity perception based explanation of likelihood insensitivity. Not only are the two measures highly correlated on the individual level, but changes in ambiguity perception due to the exogenous variation also directly induce changes in likelihood insensitivity. My evidence thus substantiates the perception based interpretation of likelihood insensitivity brought forward by multiple prior models in contrast to preference based explanations of other commonly used models.
