    Jesuits have been in Africa since they were founded, yet their history there remains poorly documented. Although scholars have started to focus on specific regions like Congo, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, a comprehensive picture of the entire Jesuit experience on the continent is still lacking. In a condensed yet accessible way, Jesuits in Africa fills that lacuna. Narrating the story century by century from the time of St. Ignatius of Loyola (c.1491-1556), founder of the Jesuits, to that of Pedro Arrupe (1907-91, in office 1965-83), 28th general superior of the Society, the book makes Jesuit history in Africa available to a general readership while offering scholars a broad view in which specialized topics can be conceived and deepened

Coetzee. The author contextualizes each writer's novels in their cultural and literary context in order to investigate similarities and differences between fictional approaches to individual complicity in politically unstable nations. The author focuses on works that eschew narrative structures through which a political order is offered as a clear enemy and distanced from the fictional characters, and instead represent social and political turmoil as a force that implicates individuals in one way or another, thus becoming capable of bringing notions of individual agency and responsibility into politically difficult situations. Through this framework, the book understands literary resistance movements as arising from and being embedded in their surrounding cultural contexts.     Over the past two decades, there has been a resurgence in the writing of African and African diaspora speculative and science fiction writing. Recent discussions around the "rise of science-fiction and fantasy" in Africa have led to a push-back, in which writers and scholars have suggested that science fiction and fantasy is not a new phenomenon in African literature, but that the deep past of the African world and its complex and mysterious foundations still register in burgeoning modern literary productions. Such influences can be seen in early twentieth-century writers such as D.O. Fagunwa's classic novel (1938) Ogboji Ode ninu Igbo Irunmale (The Forest of a Thousand Daemons: A Hunter's Saga), the mythopoeia of Elechi Amadi's The Concubine (1966) as well as the dystopian writing of Buchi Emecheta in The Rape of Shavi (1983). This volume shows this long tradition of speculative literature in examining African classics such as Kojo Laing's Woman of the Aeroplanes (1988) and the oeuvre of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. The volume also critically examines modern African texts from writers including Nnedi Okorafor, Namwali Serpell and Masande Ntshanga, as well as critically looking at the terms 'Afrofuturism' and 'Africanfuturism' vis-à-vis their particular cultural aesthetics and suitability in describing tradition rooted African speculative arts.

    "English summary: Cohabiter l'espace postcolonial focuses on the importance of ecological issues in African fiction. The book highlights the complex and diverse strategies deployed in French speaking Africa to incorporate environmental subjects in literary productions. Using ecocriticism, postcolonial and posthumanist theories to analyse a wide variety of novels, it brings to the fore, through the diversity of the issues it addresses, some contextual inflections of the relationship between the human and the non-human. From its discussion of animal otherness, cultural significance of plants, environmental racism, environmental justice, the fragility of the rural world and the survival in urban environments, the book demonstrates how ecological issues translate into socio-cultural and political challenges for local communities in Africa. French summary: Cohabiter l'espace postcolonial s'interroge essentiellement sur les enjeux écologiques dans le roman africain en français. Cet ouvrage met en lumière les stratégies complexes et diverses par lesquelles les questions environnementales s'inscrivent dans la fiction. Using ecocriticism, postcolonial and posthumanist theories to analyse a wide variety of novels, it brings to the fore, through the diversity of the issues it addresses, some contextual inflections of the relationship between the human and the non-human. From its discussion of animal otherness, cultural significance of plants, environmental racism, environmental justice, the fragility of the rural world and the survival in urban environments, the book demonstrates how ecological issues translate into socio-cultural and political challenges for local communities in Africa. French summary: Cohabiter l'espace postcolonial s'interroge essentiellement sur les enjeux écologiques dans le roman africain en français. Cet ouvrage met en lumière les stratégies complexes et diverses par lesquelles les questions environnementales s'inscrivent dans la fiction. Recourant à l'écocritique, aux théories postcoloniales et posthumanistes pour analyser un corpus romanesque large et varié, il mène le lecteur, à travers la diversité des problématiques abordés, à la découverte des nuances contextuelles du rapport entre l'humain et le non-humain. While figures such as Chinua Achebe, Ben Okri and Wole Soyinka are likely to be the chief focus of discussions of African writing, female authors have been at the forefront of fictional interrogations of identity formation and history. In the work of authors such as Mariama Bâ (Senegal), Buchi Emecheta (Nigeria), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria), Tsitsi Dangarembga (Zimbabwe), and Leila Aboulela (Sudan), there is a clear attempt to subvert the tradition of male writing where the female

    Fictions written between 1939 and 2005 by indigenous and white (post)colonial women writers emerging from an African-European cultural experience form the focus of this study.
