    Described by Aristotle as the most vital of senses, touch contains both the physical and the metaphysical in its ability to express the determination of being. To manifest itself, touch makes a movement outwards, beyond the body, and relies on a specific physical involvement other senses do not require: to touch is already to be active and to activate. This fundamental ontology makes touch the most essential of all senses. This volume in the Law and the Senses series attempts to illuminate and reconsider the complex and interflowing relations and contradictions between the tactful intrusion of the law and the untactful movement of touch. Compelling contributors from arts, literature and social science disciplines alongside artist presentations explore touch’s boundaries and formal and informal ‘laws’ of the senses. Each contribution unveils a multi-faceted new dimension to the force of touch, its ability to form, deform and reform what it touches. In unique ways, each of the several contributions to this volume recognises the trans-corporeality of touch to traverse the boundaries on the body and entangle other bodies and spaces, thus challenging the very notion of corporeal integrity and human being.

Film, Theater, Oper, Performance und Ausstellung, aber auch Kulturtheorie und Philologie prägen ihre Medialität nicht zuletzt über das Taktile und Affektive, das Berühren und Berührtwerden, aus. Dabei werden Nähe- und Distanzverhältnisse, Phantasmen der Unmittelbarkeit, der Ansteckung oder der Überwältigung genauso ausgehandelt wie etwa Formen der Bildlichkeit, Begrifflichkeit und Körperlichkeit. Unter dem Schlagwort ‚tangieren‘ untersucht der Band Szenen des Berührens aus historischen und systematischen Perspektiven. Wie lässt sich die Spannung zwischen Distanzverlust und Aussteuerung im Berühren – an der Nahtstelle von ästhetischen Verfahren und Rezeption – beschreiben? Scenic representations in the arts and cultural practices create countless forms of contact. Not only are film, theatre, opera, performance and exhibitions forms of expression that evoke tactile and emotional responses, that is, that allow us to touch or that touch us in some way, but so are cultural theory and philology. This is achieved just as much through closeness and detachment and illusions of immediacy, or of an infectious or spellbinding nature as through forms of imagery, conceptuality and corporeality. Based on the concept of touching someone emotionally and from both historical and systematic perspectives, this book examines scenes which affect their viewers in some way. How can the tension between loss of distance and modulation in the process of evoking an emotional response at the point where aesthetic behaviour and reception meet and interact be described?

    Modern commentators inculpate the woman in Gen 3:3, accusing her of altering the divine command and insinuating God's parsimony and severity. Significant voices from ancient Judaism and early Christianity, however, notice nothing wrong with her words. Rather—to anticipate a reading akin to m. Abot 1.1—her words construct a fence around the divine command. The Targum and the LXX provide the soil for this reading; Philo and Josephus provide the light for its growth. Jubilees, Abot de-Rabbi Natan, and Ephrem the Syrian provide categories to prune modern assumptions; the Sinai narrative (specifically, Exod 19:12-13a, 23) provides the exegetical ground to spark fresh growth. The proposed reading promotes a positive account of the woman and frees her from undeserved blame, thereby showcasing her proscription as an attempt to honor God rather than smear God's integrity.

But what are the blind spots of this optocentrism? Focusing on the gestures of giving, touching, showing and handcrafting, this study examines key scenes of tactile interaction between subject and artifact. Hand movements, manual maneuvers and manipulations challenge optics and expose the crises of a visually dominated perspective on the arts. The readings of this book call for a revision of an optically obscured aesthetics and poetics to include haptic experience as an often overlooked but pivotal part of the making as well as the perception of literature and the arts

    Das Szenische in den Künsten und Kulturpraktiken bringt unzählige Formen des Berührens hervor. Film, Theater, Oper, Performance und Ausstellung, aber auch Kulturtheorie und Philologie prägen ihre Medialität nicht zuletzt über das Taktile und Affektive, das Berühren und Berührtwerden, aus. Dabei werden Nähe- und Distanzverhältnisse, Phantasmen der Unmittelbarkeit, der Ansteckung oder der Überwältigung genauso ausgehandelt wie etwa Formen der Bildlichkeit, Begrifflichkeit und Körperlichkeit. Unter dem Schlagwort ‚tangieren‘ untersucht der Band Szenen des Berührens aus historischen und systematischen Perspektiven. Wie lässt sich die Spannung zwischen Distanzverlust und Aussteuerung im Berühren – an der Nahtstelle von ästhetischen Verfahren und Rezeption – beschreiben? Scenic representations in the arts and cultural practices create countless forms of contact. Not only are film, theatre, opera, performance and exhibitions forms of expression that evoke tactile and emotional responses, that is, that allow us to touch or that touch us in some way, but so are cultural theory and philology. This is achieved just as much through closeness and detachment and illusions of immediacy, or of an infectious or spellbinding nature as through forms of imagery, conceptuality and corporeality. Based on the concept of touching someone emotionally and from both historical and systematic perspectives, this book examines scenes which affect their viewers in some way. How can the tension between loss of distance and modulation in the process of evoking an emotional response at the point where aesthetic behaviour and reception meet and interact be described?

With moving images abruptly expanding the boundaries of the visible world, new printing techniques triggering a pictorial turn in graphic art, and literature becoming almost inseparable from visual media we still regard the avant-garde as heyday for modernisms obsession with the eye. But what are the blind spots of this optocentrism? Focusing on the gestures of giving, touching, showing and handcrafting, this study examines key scenes of tactile interaction between subject and artifact. Hand movements, manual maneuvers and manipulations challenge optics and expose the crises of a visually dominated perspective on the arts. The readings of this book call for a revision of an optically obscured aesthetics and poetics to include haptic experience as an often overlooked but pivotal part of the making as well as the perception of literature and the arts
