    Der Irrtum ist nicht nur Teil der anthropologischen Grundbestimmung des Menschen und Movens der philosophischen Wahrheitssuche, sondern auch ein wesentliches Element literarischer Gestaltung, etwa als dramaturgisch notwendiger Fehltritt (Hamartia), als ein Überraschung generierendes Ereignis und als Initiator oder Komplize des Zufalls, des Schicksals oder des Unbewussten und Verdrängten. Literarische Figurationen des Irrtums sind auf verschiedenen Ebenen des Erzählens nachweisbar: auf Figuren- und Erzählerebene, in thematischer wie struktureller Hinsicht sowie als poetologisches Prinzip, d.h. etwa im Verhältnis zwischen (ironischem) Text und seinen LeserInnen. Der vorliegende Aufsatzband geht dem Irrtum als ungeplanter Abweichung vom Erwarteten und, damit verbunden, dem kreativen und produktiven Potenzial in seiner literarischen und poetologischen Gestaltung nach. Mit Beiträgen von Frederike Felcht, Henrike Fürstenberg, Hanna Eglinger, Joachim Grage, Dag Heede, Unni Langås, Patrick Ledderose, Stig Olsen, Clemens Räthel, Joachim Schiedermair, Antje Wischmann und Erik Zillen. Making mistakes is not only part of humans’ basic anthropological make-up and the driving force behind the philosophical search for truth, but it is also a significant element in literary framing and design, either as a necessary dramaturgical flaw (hamartia), as an event that causes surprise or as the initiator or accomplice of chance, fate, the subconscious and suppressed memories or thoughts etc. Literary depictions of errors, misjudgements and misconceptions can be found on various narrative levels, such as those of the characters and the narrator, in both a thematic and a structural respect and as a principle in poetics, that is, in the relationship between the (ironic) text and its readers. This collection of essays examines both the concept of ‘errors’ as an unforeseen deviation from what is expected and, in relation to that, the creative and productive potential in its literary framing and design. Geburtensteuernde Zwangsmaßnahmen wurden offiziell abgeschafft und selbstbestimmte Fortpflanzung auf die Grundlage von Menschenrechten gestellt. Allerdings sind auch die hier zugrunde liegenden Konzepte nicht frei von normativen Prämissen in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Sexualität, Ethnie und Gesundheit. Franziska Schutzbach stellt in ihrer Untersuchung - in deren Zentrum die Adaption der UN-Agenda im europäischen Kontext steht - heraus, dass die gegenwärtige Essenzialisierung der Generativität im Rahmen einer heteronormativen Zweigeschlechtlichkeit zentral für die Reproduktion der herrschenden Gesellschafts- und Geschlechterverhältnisse ist.

Early plays faced vexing challenges in depicting sexuality, but modes of queerness, including queer scopophilia, queer dialogue, queer characters, and queer performances, fractured prevailing restraints. Many of these plays were produced within male homosocial environments, and thus homosociality served as a narrative precondition of their storylines. Building from these foundations, On the Queerness of Early English Drama investigates occluded depictions of sexuality in late medieval and early Tudor dramas. Tison Pugh explores a range of topics, including the unstable genders of the York Corpus Christi Plays, the morally instructive humour of excremental allegory in Mankind, the confused relationship of sodomy and chastity in John Bale's historical interludes, and the camp artifice and queer carnival of Sir David Lyndsay's Ane Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis. Pugh concludes with Terrence McNally's Corpus Christi, pondering the afterlife of medieval drama and its continued utility in probing cultural constructions of gender and sexuality

    From Sister Wives and Big Love to The Book of Mormon on Broadway, Mormons and Mormonism are pervasive throughout American popular media. In Latter-day Screens, Brenda R. Weber argues that mediated Mormonism contests and reconfigures collective notions of gender, sexuality, race, spirituality, capitalism, justice, and individualism. Focusing on Mormonism as both a meme and an analytic, Weber analyzes a wide range of contemporary media produced by those within and those outside of the mainstream and fundamentalist Mormon churches, from reality television to feature films, from blogs to YouTube videos, and from novels to memoirs by people who struggle to find agency and personhood in the shadow of the church's teachings. The broad archive of mediated Mormonism contains socially conservative values, often expressed through neoliberal strategies tied to egalitarianism, meritocracy, and self-actualization, but it also offers a passionate voice of contrast on behalf of plurality and inclusion. In this, mediated Mormonism and the conversations on social justice that it fosters create the pathway toward an inclusive, feminist-friendly, and queer-positive future for a broader culture that uses Mormonism as a gauge to calibrate its own values.

This book thus offers fragmentary commentary on disparate (Sapphic) works, such as the comics of Alison Bechdel, the paintings and cartoons of Leonardo da Vinci, Robert Reid-Pharr’s “Living as a Lesbian,” Madeleine de Scudéry’s Histoire de Sapho, John Donne’s “Sapho to Philaenis,” Todd Haynes and Patricia Highsmith’s Carol, Virginia Woolf’s Orlando, writings by Willa Cather, and the paintings and writings of Simeon Solomon, among other works. Goldberg challenges readers to imagine and experience what Sarah Orne Jewett named the “country of our friendship,” a love both exceedingly strange and compellingly familiar. Just as Sappho’s coinage “bitter-sweet” describes eros as inextricably contradictory — two things at once, one thing after another, each interrupting, complicating, each other — the juxtapositions in this book mean to continually call into question categories of identity and identification in the wake of a quintessential woman writer from Lesbos. Over and over again, Goldberg’s Sappho: ]fragments inquires into how race, sexuality, and gender cross each other. The theoretical genius of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick presides over this set of meditations and mediations on likeness and desire.     The first full-length study of incest in the Gothic genre, this book argues that Gothic writers resisted the power structures of their society through incestuous desires. It provides interdisciplinary readings of incest within father-daughter, sibling, mother-son, cousin and uncle-niece relationships in texts by authors including Emily Brontë, Eliza Parsons, Ann Radcliffe and Eleanor Sleath. The analyses, underpinned by historical, literary and cultural contexts, reveal that the incest thematic allowed writers to explore a range of related sexual, social and legal concerns. Through representations of incest, Gothic writers modelled alternative agencies, sexualities and family structures that remain relevant today.

Georgette Heyer, History, and Historical Fiction brings together an eclectic range of chapters from scholars all over the world to explore the contexts of Heyer’s career.     Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich der Frage nach den sozialen Praxen und gesellschaftlichen Bedeutungen von Schönheit bei den Karo Batak in Sumatra, Indonesien. In Tanah Karo, einer agrarisch geprägten Hochebene, säumen Aerobic- Studios und Schönheitssalon die Straßen der zwei Kleinstädte Berastagi und Kabanjahe. Weibliche Schönheit in Form von Femininität gilt als modern. Moderne Weiblichkeit, die ihren Ausdruck in einem schönen Körper findet, wird durch ein komplexes Bündel von Diskursen und Praxen lokaler, nationaler und globaler Provenienz konstituiert. Ausgehend vom Körper, der als die vermittelnde Instanz zwischen Diskursen und Praxen verstanden wird, analysiert die Verfasserin die Komplexität des Themas Schönheit und Modernität aus Perspektive der Akteurinnen. Welche Ziele verfolgen sie mit der strategischen Aneignung des Ideals der modernen Weiblichkeit? Wie strukturieren soziale Positionen die jeweiligen Aneignungsprozesse? Die Verfasserin zeigt, wie die zunehmende Bedeutung von Schönheit mit Transformationen im Bereich der Geschlechterverhältnisse, des Konsums und der sozialen Differenzierung verknüpft ist. Moderne Weiblichkeit konstituiert sich an der Schnittstelle ästhetischer, aber vor allem auch sozialer, ökonomischer, kultureller, religiöser und moralischer Diskurse. Das zentrale Motiv der Akteurinnen für die Aneignung von als modern erachteten Schönheitsidealen stellt die Erweiterung der eigenen Handlungsfähigkeit in der patrilinearen Gesellschaft der Karo Batak dar. Die jeweiligen sozialen Positionen führen zu unterschiedlichen Formen der Aneignung, die in verschiedenen Formen moderner Weiblichkeit resultieren. Am Beispiel von Frauen der städtischen Mittelschicht, jungen Frauen vom Land und waria, Menschen mit weiblicher transgender-Identität, werden diese Aneignungsprozesse und ihre gesellschaftlichen Bedeutungen vergleichend diskutiert. Die Globalisierung von Schönheit, so lässt sich resümieren, bringt – selbst auf begrenzter lokaler Ebene – verschiedene moderne Weiblichkeiten hervor. Karya ini dikhususkan untuk pertanyaan tentang praktik sosial dan makna sosial keindahan di antara Batak Karo di Sumatra, Indonesia. Di Tanah Karo, dataran tinggi pertanian, studio aerobik, dan salon kecantikan berjejer di jalan di dua kota kecil Berastagi dan Kabanjahe. Kecantikan feminin dalam bentuk feminitas dianggap modern. Feminitas modern, yang menemukan ekspresinya dalam tubuh yang indah, dibentuk oleh kumpulan kompleks wacana dan praktik asal lokal, nasional dan global. Berawal dari tubuh yang dipahami sebagai perantara antara wacana dan praktik, penulis menganalisis kompleksitas topik kecantikan dan modernitas dari sudut pandang para aktor. Apa tujuan Anda secara strategis menerapkan cita-cita feminitas modern? Bagaimana posisi sosial menyusun proses apropriasi masing-masing? Penulis menunjukkan bagaimana semakin pentingnya kecantikan terkait dengan transformasi di bidang relasi gender, konsumsi, dan diferensiasi sosial. Feminitas modern dibentuk pada antarmuka estetika, tetapi di atas semua itu juga wacana sosial, ekonomi, budaya, agama dan moral. Motif sentral para pelaku perampasan cita-cita keindahan yang dianggap modern adalah perluasan kemampuan mereka sendiri dalam berakting dalam masyarakat patrilinear Batak Karo.Posisi sosial masing-masing mengarah pada bentuk apropriasi yang berbeda, yang berakibat pada perbedaan bentuk feminitas modern. Menggunakan contoh perempuan dari kelas menengah perkotaan, perempuan muda dari pedesaan dan waria, orang-orang dengan identitas transgender perempuan, proses apropriasi dan makna sosialnya akan dibahas secara komparatif.     Finalist, 2019 Locus Award for Nonfiction, presented by the Locus Science Fiction FoundationTraverses the history of imagined futures from the 1890s to the 2010s, interweaving speculative visions of gender, race, and sexuality from literature, film, and digital mediaOld Futures explores the social, political, and cultural forces feminists, queer people, and people of color invoke when they dream up alternative futures as a way to imagine transforming the present. Lothian shows how queer possibilities emerge when we practice the art of speculation: of imagining things otherwise than they are and creating stories from that impulse. Queer theory offers creative ways to think about time, breaking with straight and narrow paths toward the future laid out for the reproductive family, the law-abiding citizen, and the believer in markets. Yet so far it has rarely considered the possibility that, instead of a queer present reshaping the ways we relate to past and future, the futures imagined in the past can lead us to queer the present. Narratives of possible futures provide frameworks through which we understand our present, but the discourse of "the" future has never been a singular one. Imagined futures have often been central to the creation and maintenance of imperial domination and technological modernity; Old Futures offers a counterhistory of works that have sought-with varying degrees of success-to speculate otherwise. Examining speculative texts from the 1890s to the 2010s, from Samuel R. Delany to Sense8, Lothian considers the ways in which early feminist utopias and dystopias, Afrofuturist fiction, and queer science fiction media have insisted that the future can and must deviate from dominant narratives of global annihilation or highly restrictive hopes for redemption.Each chapter chronicles some of the means by which the production and destruction of futures both real and imagined takes place: through eugenics, utopia, empire, fascism, dystopia, race, capitalism, femininity, masculinity, and many kinds of queerness, reproduction, and sex. Gathering stories of and by populations who have been marked as futureless or left out by dominant imaginaries, Lothian offers new insights into what we can learn from efforts to imaginatively redistribute the future

Moreover, it is also the root for profound discrimination. Today, the idea that the binary sexes are nature-given is so intrinsically woven into the fabric of human life that we tend to forget just how modern the concept is. We also tend to forget that it does not have to be more than a bump on the path to a just society. Drawing from philosophical, historical, and biological perspectives, the author challenges existing beliefs in the inevitability of the binary nature of the human sexes. The study compellingly argues for the existence of many biological sexes, not merely two.     Immanent Visitor is the first English-language translation of the work of Bolivia's greatest and most visionary twentieth-century poet. A poète maudit, Jaime Saenz rejected the conventions of polite society and became a monk in service of his own imagination. Apocalyptic and occult in his politics, a denizen of slum taverns, unashamedly bisexual, insistently nocturnal in his artistic affairs, and secretive in his leadership of a select group of writers, Saenz mixed the mystical and baroque with the fantastic, the psychological, and the symbolic. In masterly translations by two poet-translators, Kent Johnson and Forrest Gander, Saenz's strange, innovative, and wildly lyrical poems reveal a literary legacy of fierce compassion and solidarity with indigenous Bolivian cultures and with the destitute, the desperate, and the disenfranchised of that unreal city, La Paz.In long lines, in odes that name desire, with Whitmanesque anaphora, in exclamations and repetitions, Saenz addresses the reader, the beloved, and death in one extended lyrical gesture. The poems are brazenly affecting. Their semantic innovation is notable in the odd heterogeneity of formal and tonal structures that careen unabashedly between modes and moods; now archly lyrical, now arcanely symbolic, now colloquial, now trancelike.
