    Im Scheitern stößt der Mensch an die Grenzen seiner eigenen Steuerungsfähigkeit. Mit einem Mal kann er seiner Umwelt – zuweilen auch seiner eigenen Innenwelt – nicht mehr Herr werden. Damit ist ein grundlegendes Problem des Handelnden angesprochen. Aus narratologischer Perspektive kann Scheitern als Bruch innerhalb einer Kontinuität von Sinnhaftigkeit konzipiert werden, die jedoch für die Identität des individuellen Akteurs unentbehrlich ist. Dieser Bruch ist somit das Ende von Anschlussfähigkeit innerhalb jeweils spezifischer lebensweltlicher Sinnbereiche: Eine Störung unterbricht die Verflechtungsordnung des Selbst und verunmöglicht es, die bisherige Struktur der narrativen Identität fortzuführen. Der Akteur ist gezwungen, neue strukturelle Formen von Identität auszuformen und diese auf Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft umzulegen. Nach dem Scheitern müssen zudem neue Formen von Handlungsmacht etabliert und die Erfahrung von entzogener Steuerungsmacht in den Kurs des eigenen Lebens integriert werden. Untersucht werden in diesem Buch daher erzählerische Praktiken deutsch- und englischsprachiger internationaler Sprecher/innen, die dazu dienen, nach dem Bruch der narrativen Identität aus dem Scheitern heraus eine neue Sinnstruktur aufzuspinnen und Handlungsfähigkeit zurückzugewinnen. Den analytischen Fluchtpunkt dieser Exploration von biographischen Narrativen des Scheiterns bildet somit die Frage, wie das Selbst sich angesichts des Scheiterns erzählt, welche neuen Praktiken der Selbstbezüglichkeit sich ausformen und welches Verhältnis sich zwischen Scheitern und narrativer Identität aufspannt. Auf diese Weise liefert die Studie eine neue Perspektive darauf, was Scheitern ist und wie es konzipiert und verstanden werden kann.

    In der gegenwärtigen Literaturwissenschaft spielt die politische Theorie eine untergeordnete Rolle. Eine Ausnahme kann in den postcolonial studies gesehen werden, mit denen eine am Britischen Empire modellierte Theorie weitgehend umstandslos auf andere geopolitische und kulturelle Einheiten angewandt wird. Der vorliegende Band hinterfragt den Stellenwert des postkolonialen Modells für ein differenziertes Verständnis des Zusammenspiels literarischer und politischer Ordnung und stellt als Alternative die Theorie Herfried Münklers vor. Am Beispiel der Literatur des habsburgischen Mythos wird in fünf aufeinander aufbauenden Studien die Theorie Münklers in ihren für die Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften relevanten Momenten erfasst und exemplifiziert. Münklers Imperientheorie, aber auch seine Schriften zum Krieg sowie zum Mythos und zum Narrativen erweisen sich dabei nicht nur als ein komplexes und kohärentes Theoriegebäude, das es ermöglicht, Fragen der Herrschaft und der Legitimation auf einem hohen Abstraktionsniveau zu verhandeln, sondern auch als eine Theorie mit hoher Relevanz für die Erfassung literarischer und politischer Welten des 20. Jahrhunderts.

    Abstract: Dieser Artikel verwendet das verhaltensökonomische Konzept der Heuristik, um die durch Narrative verzerrte Wahrnehmung von ökonomischen Sachverhalten zu analysieren. Vier Fallbeispiele aus der jüngeren wirtschaftsgeschichtlichen Debatte um Wirtschaftskrisen zeigen auf, dass Narrative nicht nur eine positive gemeinschaftsstiftende Funktion erfüllen, sondern auch im negativen Sinne grenzüberschreitende wirtschaftspolitische Kooperation erschweren können. Wie und an was wir uns erinnern sowie die Narrative, die wir auf Grundlage dieser Erinnerungen konstruieren, sind somit für ein Verständnis aktueller wirtschaftspolitischer Präferenzen unerlässlich. Daher wird eine um wirtschaftsgeschichtliche Fallstudien und digitale Methoden angereicherte Forschung über die Zusammenhänge zwischen Narrativen und ökonomischem Verhalten benötigt

    Informed decisions are the cornerstone of a functioning democracy. The goal of this paper is twofold. First, to explore who is good at distinguishing between true and false, and, second, to learn something about mechanisms to debunk false news stories. In an experimental study, subjects were shown several news studies and asked to rate them as true or false. After this exercise, the subjects received systematically varied information about the correctness of the news stories depending on the experimental condition they had been assigned to. After a delay of three weeks, the subjects were shown the news studies again to find out which one works best. Our main findings are (i) The perceived familiarity with news stories increases the propensity to accept them as true. Actively open-minded thinking helps to distinguish between true and false. But the willingness to think deliberately does not seem to be important. (ii) By repeating false news stories, subjects are more likely to adequately identify them later (i.e., no evidence for a familiarity backfire effect). However, it decreased the ability to adequately identify correct news stories. A somewhat reverse, but weaker effect occurs when true stories are repeated: the correct identification of correct news stories is more successful, but the opposite holds for the identification of false news stories. Detailed explanations of why the false news stories contain false content increases the correct identification of false news stories, but the ability to correctly identify correct news stories is detrimental.

    Im Scheitern stößt der Mensch an die Grenzen seiner eigenen Steuerungsfähigkeit. Mit einem Mal kann er seiner Umwelt – zuweilen auch seiner eigenen Innenwelt – nicht mehr Herr werden. Damit ist ein grundlegendes Problem des Handelnden angesprochen. Aus narratologischer Perspektive kann Scheitern als Bruch innerhalb einer Kontinuität von Sinnhaftigkeit konzipiert werden, die jedoch für die Identität des individuellen Akteurs unentbehrlich ist. Dieser Bruch ist somit das Ende von Anschlussfähigkeit innerhalb jeweils spezifischer lebensweltlicher Sinnbereiche: Eine Störung unterbricht die Verflechtungsordnung des Selbst und verunmöglicht es, die bisherige Struktur der narrativen Identität fortzuführen. Der Akteur ist gezwungen, neue strukturelle Formen von Identität auszuformen und diese auf Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft umzulegen. Nach dem Scheitern müssen zudem neue Formen von Handlungsmacht etabliert und die Erfahrung von entzogener Steuerungsmacht in den Kurs des eigenen Lebens integriert werden. Untersucht werden in diesem Buch daher erzählerische Praktiken deutsch- und englischsprachiger internationaler Sprecher/innen, die dazu dienen, nach dem Bruch der narrativen Identität aus dem Scheitern heraus eine neue Sinnstruktur aufzuspinnen und Handlungsfähigkeit zurückzugewinnen. Den analytischen Fluchtpunkt dieser Exploration von biographischen Narrativen des Scheiterns bildet somit die Frage, wie das Selbst sich angesichts des Scheiterns erzählt, welche neuen Praktiken der Selbstbezüglichkeit sich ausformen und welches Verhältnis sich zwischen Scheitern und narrativer Identität aufspannt. Auf diese Weise liefert die Studie eine neue Perspektive darauf, was Scheitern ist und wie es konzipiert und verstanden werden kann.

    For most decisions, we rely on information encountered over the course of days, months or years. We consume this information in various forms, including abstract summaries of multiple data points - statistics - and contextualized anecdotes about individual instances - stories. This paper proposes that we do not always have access to the full wealth of our accumulated information, and that the information type - story versus statistic - is a central determinant of selective memory. In controlled experiments we show that the effect of information on beliefs decays rapidly and exhibits a pronounced story-statistic gap: the average impact of stories on beliefs fades by 33% over the course of a day, but by 73% for statistics. Consistent with a model of similarity and interference in memory, prompting contextual associations with statistics improves recall. A series of mechanism experiments highlights that the lower similarity of stories to interfering information is the key driving force behind the story-statistic gap.

We go beyond previous studies to explore the spectre of terrorism on the market rather than terrorist activities. Using a narrative-based approach à la Shiller (2019), we find that the spectre of terrorism during the Northern Ireland Troubles reduced returns and increased volatility on the UK stock market.

    Systematic discrimination and violence against minorities are enduring phenomena. This paper investigates the role of racist narratives in sustaining discriminatory attitudes and collective violence against the Black population in the United States South from 1865 to today. Leveraging plausible exogeneity in excess deaths from the Civil War, we show that white sex imbalances precipitated a fear of racial mixing, fostering an increase in the prevalence of an association between "Black men" and “sexual predators" in local newspapers. Sex imbalances also increased the demand for segregation, incidence of lynching for alleged sexual offenses, and explicit racial attitudes. This narrative persisted beyond the immediate aftermath of the war, shaping discrimination and collective violence over 150 years

    Data on job advertisements from 1950 up to 2020 reveal that there was a significant change among Swiss employers' stated preferences regarding their prospective employees' gender. More specifically, the proportion of gender-neutral job posts increased from 5 to almost 95 percent within the observation period. To further corroborate and contextualize this finding, I complement it with time series on the relative frequency of several specific queries, such as equality between men and women, from Google's German language book corpus. These additional series are broadly consistent with the evolution of the share of gender-neutral job posts. However, it also appears that there are two distinct narratives, one concerned with the personal sphere, identity and intimate relationships, the other with the political and public realm. Interestingly, the narrative on personal relations set off considerably earlier than the change in the proportion of gender-neutral job ads. Overall, the evidence from the different data series shows that gender norms have changed substantively, yet in a complex manner, over the past decades.

    Modern life offers nearly unbridled access to information; it is the harnessing of this information to guide decision-making that presents a challenge. We study how one individual may try to shape the way another person interprets objective information by proposing a causal explanation (or narrative) that makes sense of this objective information. Using an experiment, we examine the use of narratives as a persuasive tool in the context of financial advice where advisors may hold incentives that differ from those of the individuals they are advising. Our results reveal several insights about the underlying mechanisms that govern narrative persuasion. First, we show that advisors construct self-interested narratives and make them persuasive by tailoring them to fit the objective information. Second, we demonstrate that advisors are able to shift investors' beliefs about the future performance of a company. Third, we identify the types of narratives that investors find convincing, namely those that fit the objective information well. Finally, we evaluate the efficacy of several potential policy interventions aimed at protecting investors. We find that narrative persuasion is difficult to protect against.

Other participants listen either to an original recording or a transmitted version and then state incentivized beliefs. Our main finding is that, across a variety of transmitter incentive schemes, information about the reliability of a forecast is lost in transmission more than twice as much as information about the forecast's level. This differential information loss predictably distorts listeners' belief updates: following transmission, reliable and unreliable messages converge in influence and average belief updates from new information are weakened. Mechanism experiments show that the differential loss is not driven by transmitters deliberately trading off the costs and benefits of transmitting different kinds of information. Instead, it results from memory constraints during transmission, which can be overcome through targeted reminders.

März 2020 in den Räumen des Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) stattfand und sich erstmals umfassend und systematisch dem Thema 'Arthur Schnitzler und die bildende Kunst' widmete." (Vorwort) Arthur Schnitzlers Beziehungen zur bildenden Kunst werden in den vierzehn Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes erstmals systematisch und in quellenbasierten Spezialstudien untersucht. Zur Sprache kommen Schnitzlers Autorschaftsinszenierung in der Porträtkunst und -fotografie, seine ästhetischen Vorlieben im Erwerb von Kunstobjekten sowie auf Reisen und bei Museumsbesuchen, die Kunstbezüge und -zitate in Schnitzlers Erzählungen und Dramen sowie seine bedeutende Teilhabe an der Buchgestaltungskunst der Moderne. Sie reicht von produktiven Kooperationen mit namhaften zeitgenössischen Buch- und Umschlagkünstlern bis zu postumen bildkünstlerischen Adaptionen seines Werks in aktuellen Graphic novels. Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Judith Becher, Judith Beniston, Barbara Beßlich, Eva Höfflin-Grether, Julia Ilgner, Nikolas Immer, Dieter Martin, Martin Anton Müller, Susanne Neubrand, Günther Schnitzler, Roland Stark, Reinhard Urbach, Ralf von den Hoff und Evi Zemanek. Arthur Schnitzler’s relationships to the visual arts are examined for the first time systematically and in source-based special studies in the fourteen articles in this volume. Schnitzler’s staging of authorship in portrait art and photography, his aesthetic preferences in the acquisition of art objects as well as on trips and during visits to museums, references to art and quotations in Schnitzler’s stories and dramas, and his significant participation in the art of book design of the modern age are discussed. It ranges from productive collaborations with well-known contemporary book and cover artists to posthumous visual art adaptations of his work in current graphic novels. With contributions by Achim Aurnhammer, Judith Becher, Judith Beniston, Barbara Beßlich, Eva Höfflin-Grether, Julia Ilgner, Nikolas Immer, Dieter Martin, Martin Anton Müller, Susanne Neubrand, Günther Schnitzler, Roland Stark, Reinhard Urbach, Ralf von den Hoff and Evi Zemanek.

    Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Auch Thomas Mann war vom Nervendiskurs seiner Zeit wie auch vom Wissen um die Neurasthenie beeinflusst. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen. By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

    People typically do not acquire new information about the facts of the economy through consulting official statistics; they read or listen to mediatype reports/stories on the economy where the facts are packaged in a story. This paper tests with an experiment whether the explanatory style used in such media-type stories affects individual decision making. We also compare this particular narrative influence with that of the actual facts contained in the story. Our subjects receive a media-type story about the economy before they play a minimum effort game. The media story has either good or bad background facts about the economy and we use the psychological theory of explanatory styles to present these facts in a narrative style designed to engender either optimism or pessimism. We find evidence that the explanatory style matters more than facts in the sense that optimistic styles support higher equilibria than pessimistic ones while the influence of the facts itself is weaker.

    Mit der Unfall-Literatur behandelt die Verfasserin ein Genre, das nicht erst durch Höhenkammtexte von AutorInnen wie Franz Kafka und Robert Musil an Aufmerksamkeit verdient. Wenigstens seit dem 19. Jahrhundert fordern technische Katastrophen durch ihre neue Kontingenzerfahrung und ihren wahrnehmungsbedingten Entzug die kollektive Einbildungskraft heraus. Die vorliegende Studie geht von der These aus, dass die Unfall-Texte der literarischen Moderne (1880–1930er Jahre) einen Mythos ausbilden, der in ein produktives Spannungsverhältnis zu den neuen Massenmedien und Diskursen wie der Thermodynamik und der Physiologie gerät. Seine vielgestaltige Transformation wird entlang dreier Narrative nachvollzogen, die, ausgehend von den Risikosphären des Naturalismus (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) hinüber zu den avantgardistischen Schöpfungsgeschichten (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) bis hin zu den medienreflexiven Kurztexten der Klassischen Moderne (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil), einen facettenreichen Einblick in die Erzählweisen, Deutungspraktiken wie auch ästhetischen und rhetorischen Verfahren des Unfall-Mythos bieten. In this book, the author examines literature that portrays accidents, an aesthetic genre whose notable examples extend beyond texts by famous authors like Franz Kafka and Robert Musil. Technical disasters have provoked the collective imagination since the 19th century because of the new experience of contingency they create and the way they alter perception. This study argues that literature that depicts accidents creates a modern myth (1880s–1930s) which maintains an exciting connection with the mass media and discourses like thermodynamics and physiology. Its varied transformation is shown through three narrative genres. Starting from naturalism’s spheres of risk-taking (Hauptmann, Langmann, Zola, Alberti) to the avantgarde narrations of creation (Marinetti, Höch, Jünger, Hesse) and those texts of classical modernity (Mann, Kafka, Bierbaum, Musil) reflexive of modern media, the study offers a multifaceted insight into the narrative style, interpretation and the aesthetic and rhetorical processes involved in the literary depiction and mythicisation of accidents.
