The volume explores the popularity of a topic that appealed to early modern observers for its eroticizing shock value, its ironic take on the concept of Catholic »charity«, and its implied critique of patriarchal power structures. It analyses why early modern viewers found an incestuous, adult breastfeeding scene »good to think with« and aims at expanding and queering our notions of early modern sexuality. Jutta Gisela Sperling discusses the different visual contexts in which »Roman Charity« flourished and reconstructs contemporary horizons of expectation by reference to literary sources, medical practice, and legal culture.

Which new discoveries are brought about through the collaboration between biomorphology and art history, media studies and medicine? And what can the Gestaltung disciplines of design and architecture contribute to this foundational research? This volume gathers together essays from the Cluster of Excellence Image Knowledge Gestaltung, and, through its focus on the these three eponymous keywords, sheds light on the productivity of these diverse research approaches: from methodological transfers between the individual participating disciplines through to the interdisciplinary drafting of new structures of knowledge and research.     A poetic charting of Laura Walker's rural, southern hometown, Rimertown/an atlas delves into the startling landscapes created by the passage of time through people and through place; it is an atlas born of image and voice. Composed of four interwoven strands—a collection of "maps," a collection of "stories," a series of vernacular prose poems, and a fractured narrative—the volume explores various geographies: of the physical world, of the intersection of natural and peopled landscapes, of the passage of time, of leaving and returning, of human relationships, of soldiers and war. Walker asks: how is "home" carried in memory, in landscape, in story, in time? Her poems break and merge, stitching and fragmenting narrative, syntax, and image as they push toward their own geography, "a fever doll, tapered song/ engineered into dusk/ hold the watery stream, its buck and clanging."

    We are easily misguided as to the true nature of Facebook, and tend to treat it simply as a powerful technological instrument in the service of human intentions. We can, however, gain a better picture of it through recourse to the Jewish tradition of the golem, an image of human beings, created by them in a re-enactment of their own creation by God. It turns into a magic servant in modernity with an inherent dynamic running between its human and its subhuman characteristics. This dynamic is the main cause behind its becoming uncontrollable. In like manner, what is subhuman in Facebook serves its masters and functions under their total control, but also empowers Facebook's increasingly human operation, an algorithm-based capability which raises growing doubts about what counts as human. Facebook implies the crisis of humanity which coincides with the “death of God,” that is, the obsolescence of the idea of a divine creator.

    Der Autor identifiziert erstmals zentrale Konzepte aller MINT-Fachdidaktiken und integriert diese Konzepte zu kohärenten MINT-Konzepten. Zudem betrachtet er den möglichen pädagogischen und didaktischen Mehrwert solcher transdisziplinären MINT-Konzepte und arbeitet heraus, dass sowohl Technik- wie Geographiedidaktik im Zentrum einer vollständigen MINT-Didaktik stehen sollten: Lebensweltorientierter Geographie- wie unverkürzter, mehrperspektivischer Technikunterricht sind unabdingbare Voraussetzungen gelingenden MINT-Unterrichts. The author identifies for the first time central concepts of all STEM subject didactics and integrates these concepts into coherent STEM concepts. In addition, he considers the possible pedagogical and didactical added value of such integrated STEM concepts. The author elaborates that both technology and geography didactics should be at the center of a complete STEM didactics and that both geography and unabridged technology instruction are indispensable prerequisites for successful STEM instruction.

    Als »Laboratorium der Sinne« (Michel Serres) ist die Kunst ein Ort, an dem der Tastsinn zur Disposition steht: an dem also erprobt wird, wie das taktile Sensorium operiert und welche Formen von Erfahrung, Subjektivität und Körperlichkeit es hervorbringt. Denn Berührung beschreibt ein Verhältnis zur Welt. Sie durchkreuzt die Aufteilung der Sinne ebenso, wie die Trennung von Subjekt und Objekt. Welche Potenziale und Problemstellungen ergeben sich daraus? Die Geschichte der Kunst verzeichnet unterschiedliche Blüten wie Flauten der Erforschung des Taktilen und bringt ganz eigene Ausdrucksweisen und Rezeptionsformen hervor. Gleichzeitig werden anhand künstlerischer Werke auch spezifische Begriffe für die taktile Wahrnehmung geformt. Beide Seiten – ästhetische Praxis und theoretische Annäherung an den Tastsinn – sind der Gegenstand dieses Buches.

    Abstract What might a Mithraic initiate have seen when he viewed the ubiquitous tauroctonous image? Rather than understanding the tauroctony as illustrating an episode in a presumed mythic life of Mithras or as exemplifying some conceptual principle, this article seeks to understand the tauroctony as image qua image. Insights from art historians, neurophysiologists, and neurocognitivists show that cultural expectations for seeing the tauroctony are as an image of sacrifice and, at the same time, as an astrologically configured star map, cultural perceptions that were subject to local interpretations. A conclusion briefly suggests how all Mithraic images might have been seen and how scientific methodologies might profitably be incorporated into a history of religions.

    Als Mittel der Konservierung ist Kälte seit alters her von fundamentaler Bedeutung für die menschliche Kultur, doch erst mit dem Industriezeitalter wurden Möglichkeiten künstlicher Kühlung ersonnen, die heute selbstverständlich sind. Mit ihr gingen auch neue Möglichkeiten der Erkenntnisgewinnung einher. Die gefrorene Bewegung wurde zur Metapher der verlangsamten Aufzeichnung. Ohne Kryotechnik gäbe es keine modernen Rechen- und Bildgebungsprozesse. Diesen Möglichkeiten eiskalter Beobachtung stehen Sichtbarkeitsverluste durch Frost oder Niederschlag gegenüber, so wie die künstliche Absenkung von Temperaturen gerade durch ihren Energieverbrauch den Klimawandel weiter anheizt. Die Technik der Kühlung erreicht in jeder Hinsicht neue Tiefst- und Höchstmarken - mit umfassenden Folgen für das Wissen und die Wahrnehmung. Cold has always been of fundamental importance to human culture, but it was not until the industrial age that possibilities of artificial cooling were invented which are taken for granted today. However, colling was also accompanied by new possibilities for gaining knowledge. The frozen movement became a metaphor for technical still life, and without cryogenics, there would be no modern computing and imaging processes. Such possibilities of ice-cold observation are contrasted by losses of visibility, due to frost or precipitation, just as the artificial lowering of temperatures fuels climate change precisely through its energy consumption. Cooling technology is reaching new lows and highs in every respect – with extensive consequences for knowledge and perception.

    La Réformation ne donne pas seulement naissance à une nouvelle manière de croire, mais aussi à une nouvelle manière de voir. Dans l’Empire allemand, si Luther tolère les images dans les églises, il n’en provoque pas moins l’apparition d’une nouvelle iconographie religieuse et profane. On peut en effet relier à la prédication luthérienne et au combat confessionnel la multiplication d’images du prince, produites par l’atelier de Lucas Cranach, peintre graveur attitré des électeurs de Saxe, premiers défenseurs du Réformateur. Ce nouvel art visuel du portrait donne naissance à des formes inédites de la représentation de l’autorité politique. En réponse à cette expansion du portrait protestant, les princes catholiques de l’Empire s’engagent eux aussi dans une production visuelle nouvelle. Ainsi s’instaure, à côté du combat des armes et de la parole, une guerre des images dont l’enjeu est bien la reconnaissance légitime d’une foi, mais aussi la redéfinition du pouvoir civil. Après la paix d’Augsbourg (1555) qui reconnaît une existence légale aux luthériens, les formes de représentations de ces derniers tendent à capter les modalités figuratives impériales et monarchiques, fondées pourtant sur un modèle catholique de l’Incarnation. Le portrait du prince adossé à une importante réflexion théorique sur son autorité devient un des moyens de penser un pouvoir en pleine mutation.

    Depuis plus d'un siècle, l'automobile est devenue un objet essentiel de notre vie quotidienne. Plus qu'aucun autre outil, elle prolonge notre volonté de puissance, et notre appréhension de l'espace. Elle est fortement reliée à notre imaginaire. C'est donc assez naturellement que, pour ces raisons, et aussi en tant que décor de notre univers industriel et technologique, elle a pris place dans la littérature, et en particulier dans ce genre figuratif qu'est le roman. Elle y occupe parfois même une place très importante, décisive pour l'esthétique générale de l'œuvre. Pourtant nous ne disposons aujourd'hui que de très peu d'études sur ce sujet. Et, quand la relation plus extrinsèque que la littérature entretient avec l'automobile - par exemple, celle du témoignage sur un phénomène social global ou sur une pratique particulière comme la course automobile - aurait été mieux analysée, c'est malgré tout d'une manière quelque peu limitée dans le temps comme dans l'espace. Quelles que puissent être les raisons de cette carence, un large champ d'investigation s'ouvre devant le chercheur. Et c'est ce large champ que ce livre s'est donné pour but d'explorer, selon des perspectives diverses et des orientations critiques contrastées, parfois concurrentes mais aussi complémentaires.

    « On ne connaît pas de société organisée qui n'ait sa zone de sacralité », répète Régis Debray. Cette sacralité imprègne notre interprétation du monde en s'accrochant à tel ou tel domaine, migrant du religieux au politique ou à l'esthétique (et vice versa parfois), magnifiant tour à tour une valeur ou une autre, se concrétisant dans des rituels ou dans leur transgression, se traduisant par des manifestations collectives ou par une ascèse intérieure. Le sacré, dans sa dimension anthropologique la plus large comme dans ses formes culturelles particulières, alimente l'imaginaire de toute société et, comme tel, constitue un ferment de l'expression artistique et littéraire. Les textes ici réunis font dialoguer des œuvres poétiques et romanesques, théâtrales, iconiques et plastiques, tirées des cultures arabe et européenne, de façon à questionner en résonance leurs interprétations du sacré et les formes qu'elles lui donnent. Où l'on voit que les écrits sacrés (la Bible et ses prolongements chrétiens et islamiques, mais aussi les mythes de la Grèce antique) continuent à inspirer mises en récits et mises en scène qui les transforment et les revivifient à l'infini. Que la quête poétique, recherche verbale et activité symbolique, reste sœur des aspirations mystiques intimes et/ou cosmiques. Que la figuration iconique et plastique, en particulier celle du corps humain, garde trace d'une transcendance liée à la conscience de sa finitude. Que l'activité théâtrale n'a rompu ni avec ses racines dionysiaques ni avec ses origines funéraires. Que cette production imaginante est toujours accompagnée de discours réflexifs qui la relativisent et la balisent, dénonçant les dérives possibles (ou tristement actualisées) et maintenant le cap d'une compréhension tolérante, plus que jamais indispensable.

    L'image, présentée de façon autonome, ou associée à d'autres éléments, constitue un vecteur de plus en plus pratiqué et privilégié dans la transmission des savoirs, des connaissances et des informations. S'il est presque impensable de concevoir une image seule, le texte qui l'accompagne lui donnant son sens ou du moins un sens par la légende ou le commentaire, il est de plus en plus difficile d'offrir un texte sans image, du moins dans le champ de la communication. Pour couvrir ce champ nouveau, aux spécialistes qui se sont depuis toujours intéressés à l'image : historiens de l'art, de l'histoire religieuse, du cinéma, de la télévision, se sont donc joints des chercheurs spécialistes de linguistique, de sociologie, d'histoire, de littérature, de politique. Tous envisagent les rapports qui peuvent et doivent s'établir entre texte et image, dans les champs pluridisciplinaires suivants : médias, cinéma, outils pédagogiques, fiction littéraire, discours politiques et identitaires, chroniques. Ces trente-cinq contributions concernent aussi bien l'image fixe (peintures, gravures, enluminures, illustrations de manuels scolaires, bandes dessinées, publicités, graffiti) que mobile (cinéma, télévision) dans les mondes hispaniques et hispano-américains, du Moyen Âge à nos jours.

    La tradition chinoise nomme « paysages d'emprunt » ces vues sur la nature soulignées par un cadre à claire-voie, que les architectes de jardin ménagent le long des galeries offertes à la promenade des princes. Un tel dispositif, conjugaison d'attente et de surprise, réunit quelques-uns des principaux paradoxes autour desquels tourne ce livre. Il s'agit de s'arrêter, pour une fois, sur la limite et sur ce qu'elle ouvre dans l'expérience des arts. Sur la loi incertaine du cadre perceptif, le tremblement des contours et des œuvres, le mouvement infini des contextes. Dix articles, dix épreuves : une « architecture de points de vue », comme dit Deleuze, qui converge en un lieu où la promenade pourrait bien faire vaciller la fenêtre et laisser filer le regard hors du champ attendu. La limite des arts touche à l'illimité de l'art. En témoignent ici le Voyage d'hiver comme le readymade, Bartleby avec Denis Roche, et tous les paysages esthétiques déclinés dans des pratiques aussi divergentes que la danse, la photographie ou la cure.
