Aus dem Inhalt: Es ist, was es ist – dieser bescheiden anmutende Satz war Vater und Mutter zugleich von einem Wesen, dessen Name kein Name ist und das doch – so bleibt zu hoffen – ein jeder und eine jede kennt. Wie ein Lufthauch, ein dünner, sanft gleitender Lufthauch weht das Wesen durch die Welt. Der Lufthauch flüstert das Leben in unser aller Herz. Der Lufthauch entsteht, er bleibt und breitet sich aus, zuweilen entschwindet er. Nur unser Atem – sanft, mutig und verletzlich – braucht ihn, weil sonst unser Herz zu erstarren droht. Nichts ist so aufregend, so unendlich aufregend, als den Lufthauch wachsen zu sehen, wie er sich ausbreitet unter Menschen. Dieses flüchtige Wesen ist eine prächtige Gestalt, wohl die prächtigste auf Erden. Doch bis diese Pracht zur Entfaltung kommen kann, muss er, der Lufthauch, einen langen Weg beschreiten. Eine zauberhafte, luftigleichte Parabel über Identität und Persönlichkeit. Ein poetisch-philosophisches Lehrstück, das von der ersten bis zur letzten Zeile fesselt.

    This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative quantum gravity theory, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called ‘translative turn’ of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation. More radically, the book stages a provocative ‘provincialization’ of linguistic translation, so that literary translation in particular is shown to display a remarkable awareness of its own participation in a larger creative ‘contact zone’. As a result, the German language, literary translations in and out of German, and the German-language classroom, can be understood respectively as ‘quantum’ contact zones. Russell West-Pavlov is Professor of Anglophone Literatures at the University of Tübingen and Research Associate at the University of Pretoria. This book suggests that linguistic translation is one minute province of an immense process of creative activity that constitutes the world as an ongoing dynamism of unceasing transformation. Building upon the speculative theory of quantum gravity, which provides a narrative of the push-pull dynamics of transformative translation from the very smallest scales of reality to the very greatest, this book argues that the so-called “translative turn” of the 1990s was correct in positing translation as a paradigmatic concept of transformation.     Die Beiträge dieses Bandes untersuchen, wie Kultur im Kontext von Religion übersetzt wird. Die literaturwissenschaftlichen, historischen und linguistischen Studien zeigen, wie unterschiedliche kulturelle Traditionen und Sprachen über Grenzen hinweg kommuniziert werden. Die Aufsätze widmen sich dem missionarischen Feld des frühen Mittelalters und kolonialisierten Kulturen von Lateinamerika, Indien, China, Afrika und Australien vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Des Weiteren werden literarische Werke in Hinsicht darauf untersucht, wie sie Kultur übertragen und übersetzen: zum einen ein christliches Theaterstück im islamischen Kontext und zum anderen ein haitianisch-nordamerikanischer Diaspora-Roman. Ein weiterer Beitrag diskutiert, wie das Konzept von Religion selbst im akademischen Bereich erklärt und übertragen wird. Durch die Anwendung unterschiedlicher methodischer Ansätze zeigen die Autoren innovativ auf, wie Kultur übersetzt werden kann.Mit Beiträgen vonGwilym Colenso, Fiona Darroch, Sabine Dedenbach-Salazar Sáenz, Pär Eliasson, Sarah Irving, Alison Jasper, David Moore, Brian Murdoch, Richard H. The contributions, which analyse texts in literary, ethnohistorical and/or linguistic terms, show how different cultural traditions and languages are communicated across boundaries. They include studies of the missionary context of the Early Middle Ages and of colonially dominated cultures in Latin America, India, China, Africa and Australia, from the 16th to the early 20th century; and they analyse literary works with respect to how they transmit and translate culture: one a Christian play in the context of Islam, the other one a novel of the Haitian diaspora in the USA; another contribution presents the challenges of how the concept of religion itself is conveyed in contemporary scholarly contexts. By using different methodological tools, the authors show the manifold and innovative ways in which this field of the translation of culture can be approached. Seine komparatistisch angelegte Studie macht deutlich, welche Bedeutung dem Buchstaben in hermeneutischen und psychoanalytischen Deutungsprozessen, Gedichten und Übersetzungen sowie dem modernen Roman zukommt. Dies zeigt sich nicht nur in der Hermeneutik von Friedrich Schleiermacher bis zu Sigmund Freud, sondern vor allem in der Literatur der Moderne, so bei Friedrich Hölderlin und Paul Celan, aber auch bei Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Pynchon. Der Raum zwischen Buchstabe und Geist erweist sich hier als ein Ort der Interaktion, an dem das Leben des Geistes nur zum Ausdruck kommt, wenn es den Buchstaben anerkennt und an seinem eigenen Leben partizipieren lässt

    Nino Osepashvili beschreibt mittels einer interdisziplinären Herangehensweise, wie die literarisch-translatorischen Prozesse in Georgien im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zur Ausprägung einer nationalen Identität beitrugen. Durch die Verknüpfung translationswissenschaftlicher, sozialwissenschaftlicher und historisch-politischer Ansätze zeigt die Autorin auf, welche Spuren die „Grenzlage“ zwischen Europa und Asien in der georgischen Literatur hinterlassen hat. Die Translationsprozesse untersucht sie dabei sowohl aus der Mikro- als auch Makroperspektive: Mithilfe der Polysystemtheorie analysiert sie den europäischen Kontext und widmet sich anschließend mikrosoziologisch den literarisch-politischen Prozessen innerhalb Georgiens. In this book, using an interdisciplinary approach, Nino Osepashvili describes how processes of translating literature in Georgia in the early 20th century contributed to the manifestation of a national identity. By means of a combination of approaches from translation studies, the social sciences and political history, the author reveals how Georgia’s ‘border location’ between Europe and Asia influenced its literature. She examines the translation processes from both the micro and the macro perspective. Using Polysystem theory, she analyses the European context from the macro perspective and addresses the literary and political processes within Georgia from the perspective of Microsociology.

    "Tristan Corbière is a poet who tests language to the limits, dislocating normal syntax, revelling in self-contradictory affirmations, and piling up puns. Born in Brittany in 1845, he died at only 29, leaving to future readers a scattered assortment of texts. This collection brings together several less well-known pieces, some early versions of published poems, and others which were handwritten into his own copy of his only published collection, Les Amours jaunes.

    Presented as a bilingual edition, this volume offers the first English translations of many of these writings, all of which testify to Corbière’s sly humour, linguistic glee, formal innovation and mordant self-irony. Playful and comic, Corbière’s work is also experimental, subversive and moving.

    The texts are translated by Christopher Pilling, an award-winning poet, playwright and translator. He is a founder of the Cumbrian Poets workshops, which he has hosted for 35 years, a convenor of Skiddaw u3a, and the organiser of translation days and readings in Keswick. He has translated the work of a number of poets, mainly from French but also from Latin. A beneficiary of the Royal Literary Fund, Christopher is also a member of Parkinson’s UK.

    Oysters, nightingales and cooking pots provides a fitting sequel to Christopher Pilling’s translation of Tristan Corbière’s Les Amours jaunes, published as These Jaundiced Loves in 1995. The volume is edited by Richard Hibbitt and Katherine Lunn-Rockliffe.

    Which is the identity of a traveler who is constantly on the move between cultures and languages? What happens with stories when they are transmitted from one place to another, when they are retold, remade, translated and re-translated? What happens with the scholars themselves, when they try to grapple with the kaleidoscopic diversity of human expression in a constantly changing world? These and related questions are, if not given a definite answer, explored in the chapters of this anthology. Its overall topic, narratives that pass over national, language and ethnical borders include studies about transcultural novels, poetry, drama and the narratives of journalism. There is a broad geographic diversity, not only in the anthology as a whole, but also in each of the single contributions. This in turn demand a multitude of theoretical and methodological approaches, which cover a spectrum of concepts from such different sources as post-colonial studies, linguistics, religion, aesthetics, art and media studies, often going beyond the well-known Western frameworks. The works of authors like Miriam Toews, Yoko Tawada, Javier Moreno, Leila Abouela, Marguerite Duras, Kyoko Mori, Francesca Duranti, Donato Ndongo-Bidyogo, Rībi Hideo, and François Cheng are studied from a variety of perspectives. Other chapters deal with code-switching in West-african novels, border-crossing in the Japanese noh drama, translational anthologies of Italian literature, urban legends on the US-Mexico border, migration in German children's books, and war trauma in poetry.     This volume of Lage Landen Studies has a twofold purpose: on the one hand we want to pay attention to the scholarly work on the Dutch author Cees Nooteboom, in particular to his poetry in translation which has hardly received any academic attention yet, and on the other hand we would like to contribute to trends in Translation Studies which focus on agency, subjectivity, intention, translators poetics and creativity in translated texts. Indeed, in the last decade the focus of Translation Studies has shifted to the translator who plays such an important role in the circulation of cultural products nowadays. In this volume the contributions not only focus on Nooteboom’s poems in translation, but also on Nooteboom as a translator of poetry himself, again a subject which has hardly been studied yet. The first part opens with an introduction on Nooteboom’s poetry by Susanne Schaber, editor of the Gesammelte Werke at Suhrkamp Verlag in Germany. In the second contribution of this section Ton Naaijkens gives a plea for intuition and creativity in scholarly work on translation. The second section deals with Cees Nooteboom as a translator of poetry. Esther Op de Beek, who contributed together with Nooteboom on the book Avenue (fifteen years of world literature), highlights the position of Nooteboom as a cultural mediator. Stéphanie Vanastens contribution analyses this mediation position with the help of a concrete case study of two French poets translated and presented by Nooteboom to the Dutch and Flemish public of Avenue. Yves T’Sjoen addresses methodological issues for translation scholars who want to study the work of writer-translators such as Claus and Nooteboom. In the last section, the translated poetry of Nooteboom forms the centre of the contributions. Jane Fenoulhet focusses on four English translations of the poem ‘Bashō’, Stefaan Evenepoel on two translations of ‘Leeftocht’ and in the round table discussion translators Ard Posthuma, David Colmer, Irinia Michajlova and Philippe Noble discuss their translators’ choices with the poet Cees Nooteboom. In his afterword the poet reflects on the round table and the symposium in Ghent in November 2016 which formed the exciting starting point for this volume.     De poëzie van Cees Nooteboom, de kern van zijn oeuvre, werd vertaald in de grootste Europese talen. Maar ook zelf droeg de dichter bij als vertaler: hij publiceerde talrijke vertalingen van internationaal vermaarde collega’s in het legendarische maandblad Avenue. Deze bundel van Lage Landen Studies neemt het werk van Nooteboom als inspirator van vertalingen en als resultaat van een vertaalproces onder de loep. De auteurs verkennen nieuwe richtingen in het denken over poëzie vertalen en bespreken Nootebooms bemiddelende rol als redacteur-vertaler. Denken over poëzie en vertalen geeft lezers inzicht in de werkwijze van vertalers met analyses van vertaalde gedichten en een discussie met Nooteboom en zijn poëzievertalers over concrete vertaalkeuzes.

    How does language work? How does language produce truth and beauty? Eleventh-century Arabic scholarship has detailed answers to these universal questions. Language Between God and the Poets reads the theory of four major scholars and asks how the conceptual vocabulary they shared enabled them to create theory in lexicography, theology, logic, and poetics. Their ideas engaged God and poetry at the nexus of language, mind, and reality. Their core conceptual vocabulary carved reality at the joints in a manner quite different from Anglophone and European thought in any period. This vocabulary centered around the words maʿnā (“mental content”) and ḥaqīqah (“accuracy”), two concepts for which Alexander Key develops a translation methodology with the help of Wittgenstein and Kuhn. Language Between God and the Poets helps us see how fundamental the lexicon and lexicography can be to all kinds of theory, how theology can be a science of naming, how logic interacts with language, and how poetic affect can be built on grammar and logic. The four scholars are ar-Rāġib al-Iṣfahānī, Ibn Fūrak, Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), and ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Ǧurǧānī.

    The flow of literature from Sweden to France is unlike anything else. Canonized authors such as August Strindberg and Selma Lagerlöf have been surprisingly successful in translating into French. The same applies to later high-prestige literature by Torgny Lindgren and P O Enquist. French publishers were also among the first to discover the Swedish detective story writers. The rights to Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy were bought by a French publisher before the novels began to be published in Swedish. Children's literature, on the other hand, perhaps Sweden's foremost contribution to world literature, had a late breakthrough in the French book market. This also applies to Astrid Lindgren, the incomparably most successful of all authors translated from Swedish. Why did Swedish fiction receive this particular reception in France? This book describes how Swedish literature has been translated into French, with a special focus on the period after 1945. During this period, the number of editions of Swedish fiction in French has increased tenfold. Which translators, publishers and other actors have contributed to this development? How have they reasoned and acted to promote the interests of Swedish literature? What types of literature and authorship have been particularly successful? These questions are answered on the basis of comprehensive statistics based on the latest bibliographic lists. The book also discusses the theoretical conditions for this type of study. The leading researchers in world literature research - Pascale Casanova, David Damrosch and Franco Moretti - are related to a literary sociological study of the book's communities.

    There has not been conducted much research in religious studies and (linguistic) anthropology analysing Protestant missionary linguistic translations. Contemporary Protestant missionary linguists employ grammars, dictionaries, literacy campaigns, and translations of the Bible (in particular the New Testament) in order to convert local cultures. The North American institutions SIL and Wycliffe Bible Translators (WBT) are one of the greatest scientific-evangelical missionary enterprises in the world. The ultimate objective is to translate the Bible to every language. The author has undertaken systematic research, employing comparative linguistic methodology and field interviews, for a history-of-ideas/religions and epistemologies explication of translated SIL missionary linguistic New Testaments and its premeditated impact upon religions, languages, sociopolitical institutions, and cultures. In addition to taking into account the history of missionary linguistics in America and theological principles of SIL/WBT, the author has examined the intended cultural transformative effects of Bible translations upon cognitive and linguistic systems. A theoretical analytic model of conversion and translation has been put forward for comparative research of religion, ideology, and knowledge systems

    This interdisciplinary volume looks at one of the central cultural practices within the Jewish experience: translation. With contributions from literary and cultural scholars, historians, and scholars of religion, the book considers different aspects of Jewish translation, starting from the early translations of the Torah, to the modern Jewish experience of migration, state-building and life in the Diaspora. The volume addresses the question of how Jews have used translation to pursue different cultural and political agendas, such as Jewish nationalism, the development of Yiddish as a literary language, and the collection of Holocaust testimonies. It also addresses how non-Jews have translated elements of the Judaic tradition to create an image of the Other.
