    The four-hundred-year story of readers' struggles with a famously unreadable poem—and what they reveal about the history of reading and the future of literary studies"I am now in the country, and reading Spencer's fairy-queen. Pray what is the matter with me?" The plaint of an anonymous reader in 1712 sounds with endearing frankness a note of consternation that resonates throughout The Faerie Queene's reception history, from its first known reader, Spenser's friend Gabriel Harvey, who urged him to write anything else instead, to Virginia Woolf, who insisted that if one wants to like the poem, "the first essential is, of course, not to read" it. For more than four centuries critics have sought to counter this strain of readerly resistance, but rather than trying to remedy the frustrations and failures of Spenser's readers, Catherine Nicholson cherishes them as a sensitive barometer of shifts in the culture of reading itself.Indeed, tracking the poem's mixed fortunes in the hands of its bored, baffled, outraged, intoxicated, obsessive, and exhausted readers turns out to be an excellent way of rethinking the past and future prospects of literary study. By examining the responses of readers from Queen Elizabeth and the keepers of Renaissance commonplace books to nineteenth-century undergraduates, Victorian children, and modern scholars, this book offers a compelling new interpretation of the poem and an important new perspective on what it means to read, or not to read, a work of literature

    Alexander the Great, according to Plutarch, carried on his campaigns a copy of the Iliad, kept alongside a dagger; on a more pronounced ideological level, ancient Romans looked to the Aeneid as an argument for imperialism. In this major reinterpretation of epic poetry beginning with Virgil, David Quint explores the political context and meanings of key works in Western literature. He divides the history of the genre into two political traditions: the Virgilian epics of conquest and empire that take the victors' side (the Aeneid itself, Camoes's Lusíadas, Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata) and the countervailing epic of the defeated and of republican liberty (Lucan's Pharsalia, Ercilla's Araucana, and d'Aubigné's Les tragiques). These traditions produce opposing ideas of historical narrative: a linear, teleological narrative that belongs to the imperial conquerors, and an episodic and open-ended narrative identified with "romance," the story told of and by the defeated. Quint situates Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained within these rival traditions. He extends his political analysis to the scholarly revival of medieval epic in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and to Sergei Eisenstein's epic film, Alexander Nevsky. Attending both to the topical contexts of individual poems and to the larger historical development of the epic genre, Epic and Empire provides new models for exploring the relationship between ideology and literary form

    Unter dem Eindruck des Ersten Weltkriegs hatte das Warten das Kämpfen im emphatischen Sinn abgelöst, war sowohl im Feld als auch in der Heimat zu einer generationellen Erfahrung geworden und in einen Heroismus des Ausharrens, Durchhaltens und Ertragens überführt worden. Der Akzent verschiebt sich weg von einer äußerlichen Tat; das Heroische wird interiorisiert und als Haltung inthronisiert. Dieser neuen Heroik als Leitdevise im Krieg, ihrer kritischen Betrachtung im Nachkrieg sowie ihrer Umfunktionalisierung zu einer Strategie der Gegenwartsbewältigung in den 1920er-Jahren ist diese Studie gewidmet. Am Beispiel des westeuropäischen Theaters der Kriegs- und Zwischenkriegszeit wird untersucht, wie sie ästhetisch vermittelt, reflektiert und bewertet wurde. Under the impact of the First World War, waiting had replaced fighting in an emphatic sense, had become a generational experience both in the field and at home, and had been transformed into a form of heroism involving perseverance and endurance. The accent had shifted away from heroism as an external deed; instead, it was interiorised and enthroned as an attitude. This study is dedicated to this new heroism as a guiding motto during the war, its critical consideration in the post-war period and its re-functionalisation as a strategy for coping with the present in the 1920s. Using the example of Western European theatre during both the war and the interwar period, it examines how such heroism was aesthetically conveyed, reflected and evaluated.

    This paper examines Carl Dennis’s secularized religious visions in his Pulitzer-winning poetry collection, Practical Gods (2001). Dennis’s secularized religious visions can be quite understandable in the context of the ascending trends of secularization, diversification, and globalization of religion in America, and they demonstrate affinities with literary predecessors such as Wallace Stevens, with his aestheticized religion under the influence of Nietzsche, as well as with the innovative religious thinking of William Blake, Kazantzakis, and Oscar Wilde, and with certain aspects of Taoism and Zen Buddhism. This paper addresses Dennis’s perception of theological controversies, such as the contradiction between the omnipotence of God and the existence of evil, theological determinism vs. human free will, theological view of history vs. New Historicism, divinity in man, aestheticized religion, and earthly paradise through the focused lens of Dennis’s “practical religion”. Despite the breadth of the theses in Dennis’s conceived practical religion as examined in this paper, they are all tied up with the core of the phenomenological study of religion: that religion is important to believers of the religion irrespective of the objective truth of the religion or the actual existence of God. In Dennis’s views, as accorded with the phenomenological study of religions, God maybe an idea and a fiction, but it is a necessary fiction for humans. Thus, Dennis humanizes gods with the flaws and fragility of humanity while deifying ordinary humanity in the contemporary context. Contrasting what he views as theological determinism with its view of linear history and the apocalypse of grand events, Dennis embraces human free will, a non-teleological, aestheticized living with necessary fiction, and a transient paradise on earth. Carl Dennis’s religious vision reveals a poststructuralist (even though he did not brand himself so) abolition of the absoluteness of a transcendent signifier as well as binary opposition (between God and man, good and evil, religious/historical truth and fictionality), and it manifests an affinity with New Historicism and the phenomenological study of religion.

    Unter dem Eindruck des Ersten Weltkriegs hatte das Warten das Kämpfen im emphatischen Sinn abgelöst, war sowohl im Feld als auch in der Heimat zu einer generationellen Erfahrung geworden und in einen Heroismus des Ausharrens, Durchhaltens und Ertragens überführt worden. Der Akzent verschiebt sich weg von einer äußerlichen Tat; das Heroische wird interiorisiert und als Haltung inthronisiert. Dieser neuen Heroik als Leitdevise im Krieg, ihrer kritischen Betrachtung im Nachkrieg sowie ihrer Umfunktionalisierung zu einer Strategie der Gegenwartsbewältigung in den 1920er-Jahren ist diese Studie gewidmet. Am Beispiel des westeuropäischen Theaters der Kriegs- und Zwischenkriegszeit wird untersucht, wie sie ästhetisch vermittelt, reflektiert und bewertet wurde.Under the impact of the First World War, waiting had replaced fighting in an emphatic sense, had become a generational experience both in the field and at home, and had been transformed into a form of heroism involving perseverance and endurance.     Sara Jeannette Duncan (1861-1922) is a prominent Canadian female writer in her time. Her novel The Imperialist (1904), dealing primarily with Canadian nationality, is a sophisticated epitome of Canadian society that is most authentic to Canadian social and political life at the turn of the twentieth century. The Imperialist, as a product of a historical context in Canadian literature, incorporates historical reality and fictional imagination, and presents an uncertainty and perplexity in the ideology of Canadians at the turn of the twentieth century. Positioning The Imperialist in the context of New Historicism, this essay explores the intertextuality of the "historicity of texts" and the "textuality of history". Furthermore, the essay investigates the circulation between literary text of The Imperialist and non-literary texts that surrounded it, revealing how literary text and historical-cultural context negotiate, circulate, and construct each other.

    The study analyses Cold War discourses in Austrian post-war literature, a subject that so far has been neglected in Austrian literary history. Through extensive research, 50 mainly unknown or little acknowledged novels, stories, plays and scenes were discovered which discuss phenomena of the Cold War that defined the first post-war decades. The theoretical focus on New Historicism allows an analysis of a broad spectrum of thematic clusters, images, discursive constellations and narratives which are contextualised both in national and international Cold War discourse./ In 15 chapters, the study discusses the discursive patterns of more than 50 rather unknown books from Austrian literature from the period 1945 to 1966, such as constructions and imaginations of borders, fictive travels behind the Iron Curtain, the Gulag, and metaphors of disease and narratives of espionage. These discourse patterns are positioned within the context of the Cold War.
