    Die Narratologie, die wissenschaftliche Erforschung von Erzählungen konzentriert sich traditionell auf literarische Werke und die Kunst des Dramas. Drehbuch-, Comic- und Game-Autor Joachim Friedmann zeigt, dass es grundlegende narrative Text-Gestaltungsstrategien gibt, die medienübergreifend, d.h. transmedial wirksam sind. Dabei berücksichtigt er narratologische Grundlagentexte ebenso wie die aktuellen Forschungen der postklassischen und transmedialen Narratologie sowie anwendungsbezogene Dramaturgie-Ratgeber. Er Setzt diese Modelle erstmalig systematisch in Bezug zueinander. Dabei beschreibt er strukturelle wie inhaltliche Elemente narrativer Gestaltung, berücksichtigt in seiner Betrachtung auf diese Weise alle Ebenen einer Erzählung und schafft eine wissenschaftlich fundierte wie praktisch anwendbare Toolbox für die Gestaltung transmedialer Erzählungen. Einen Schwerpunkt seiner Untersuchung bildet die Anwendung dieser Theorien auf emergente und interaktive, digital vermittelte Erzählungen wie Computergames.

    Im Scheitern stößt der Mensch an die Grenzen seiner eigenen Steuerungsfähigkeit. Mit einem Mal kann er seiner Umwelt – zuweilen auch seiner eigenen Innenwelt – nicht mehr Herr werden. Damit ist ein grundlegendes Problem des Handelnden angesprochen. Aus narratologischer Perspektive kann Scheitern als Bruch innerhalb einer Kontinuität von Sinnhaftigkeit konzipiert werden, die jedoch für die Identität des individuellen Akteurs unentbehrlich ist. Dieser Bruch ist somit das Ende von Anschlussfähigkeit innerhalb jeweils spezifischer lebensweltlicher Sinnbereiche: Eine Störung unterbricht die Verflechtungsordnung des Selbst und verunmöglicht es, die bisherige Struktur der narrativen Identität fortzuführen. Der Akteur ist gezwungen, neue strukturelle Formen von Identität auszuformen und diese auf Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft umzulegen. Nach dem Scheitern müssen zudem neue Formen von Handlungsmacht etabliert und die Erfahrung von entzogener Steuerungsmacht in den Kurs des eigenen Lebens integriert werden. Untersucht werden in diesem Buch daher erzählerische Praktiken deutsch- und englischsprachiger internationaler Sprecher/innen, die dazu dienen, nach dem Bruch der narrativen Identität aus dem Scheitern heraus eine neue Sinnstruktur aufzuspinnen und Handlungsfähigkeit zurückzugewinnen. Den analytischen Fluchtpunkt dieser Exploration von biographischen Narrativen des Scheiterns bildet somit die Frage, wie das Selbst sich angesichts des Scheiterns erzählt, welche neuen Praktiken der Selbstbezüglichkeit sich ausformen und welches Verhältnis sich zwischen Scheitern und narrativer Identität aufspannt. Auf diese Weise liefert die Studie eine neue Perspektive darauf, was Scheitern ist und wie es konzipiert und verstanden werden kann.

    In der gegenwärtigen Literaturwissenschaft spielt die politische Theorie eine untergeordnete Rolle. Eine Ausnahme kann in den postcolonial studies gesehen werden, mit denen eine am Britischen Empire modellierte Theorie weitgehend umstandslos auf andere geopolitische und kulturelle Einheiten angewandt wird. Der vorliegende Band hinterfragt den Stellenwert des postkolonialen Modells für ein differenziertes Verständnis des Zusammenspiels literarischer und politischer Ordnung und stellt als Alternative die Theorie Herfried Münklers vor. Am Beispiel der Literatur des habsburgischen Mythos wird in fünf aufeinander aufbauenden Studien die Theorie Münklers in ihren für die Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaften relevanten Momenten erfasst und exemplifiziert. Münklers Imperientheorie, aber auch seine Schriften zum Krieg sowie zum Mythos und zum Narrativen erweisen sich dabei nicht nur als ein komplexes und kohärentes Theoriegebäude, das es ermöglicht, Fragen der Herrschaft und der Legitimation auf einem hohen Abstraktionsniveau zu verhandeln, sondern auch als eine Theorie mit hoher Relevanz für die Erfassung literarischer und politischer Welten des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Late-life creativity has not always been viewed favourably. Prevalent „peak-and-decline“ models suggest that artists, as they grow old, cease to produce highquality work. Aiming to counter such ageist discourses, the present study proposes a new ethics of reading literary texts by elderly authors. For this purpose, it develops a methodology that consolidates textual analysis with cultural gerontology.

Erin James and Eric Morel’s volume Environment and Narrative: New Directions in Econarratology explores the complexity of pairing material environments and their representations with narrative forms of understanding.

    To explore the methodological possibilities within “econarratology,” the contributors evaluate the mechanics of how narratives convey environmental understanding via building blocks such as the organization of time and space, characterization, focalization, description, and narration.     This book is rooted in the author’s experience as an interviewer and researcher in the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project – the biggest European oral history project devoted to a single Nazi concentration camp system, realized in the years 2002/2003 at the University of Vienna. Over 850 Mauthausen survivors have been recorded worldwide, more than 160 of them in Poland, and over 30 by the author. The work offers an in-depth analysis of Polish survivors’ accounts, sensitive to both, form and content of these stories, as well as their social and cultural framing. The analysis is accompanied by an interpretation of (Polish) camp experiences in a broader biographical and historical perspective. The book is an interpretive journey from camp experiences, through the survivors’ memories, to narratives recalling them − and backwards.

    "In this study, I examine the life narrative of a female factory labourer, Elsa Koskinen (née Kiikkala, born in 1927). I analyze her account of her experiences related to work, class and gender because I seek to gain a better understanding of how changes in these aspects of life influenced the ways in which she saw her own worth at the time of the interviews and how she constructed her subjectivity. Elsa’s life touches upon many of the core aspects of 20th-century social change: changes in women’s roles, the entrance of middle- class women into working life, women’s increasing participation in the public sphere, feminist movements, upward social mobility, the expansion of the middle class, the growth of welfare and the appearance of new technologies. What kind of trajectory did Elsa take in her life? What are the key narratives of her life? How does her narrative negotiate the shifting cultural ideals of the 20th century? A life story, a retrospective evaluation of a life lived, is one means of constructing continuity and dealing with the changes that have affected one’s life, identity and subjectivity. In narrating one’s life, the narrator produces many different versions of her/him self in relation to other people and to the world. These dialogic selves and their relations to others may manifest internal contradictions. Contradictions may also occur in relation to other narratives and normative discourses. Both of these levels, subjective meaning making and the negotiation of social ideals and collective norms, are embedded in life narratives.

    My interest in this study is in the ways in which gender and class intersect with paid labour in the life of an ordinary female factory worker. I approach gender, class and work from both an experiential and a relational perspective, considering the power of social relationships and subject formations that shape individual life at the micro-level. In her narratives Elsa discusses ambivalence related to gendered ideals, social class, and especially the phenomenon of social climbing as well as technological advance.

    I approach Elsa’s life and narratives ethnographically. The research material was acquired in a long-standing interview process and the analysis is based on reflexivity of the dialogic knowledge production and contextualization of Elsa’s experiences. In other words I analyze Elsa’s narratives in their situational but also socio-cultural and historical contexts. Specific episodes in one’s life and other significant events constitute smaller narrative entities, which I call micro-narratives. The analysis of micro-narratives, key dialogues and cultural ideals embedded in the interview dialogues offers perspectives on experiences of social change and the narrator’s sense of self"

    Narrative/s in Conflict presents the proceedings of an international workshop, held at the Trinity Long Room Hub Dublin in 2013, to a wider audience. This was a cross-disciplinary cooperation between the comparative research network 'Broken Narratives' (University of Vienna), the research strand 'Identities in Transformation' (Trinity College Dublin) and the Graduate Center for the Study of Culture at the University of Giessen. What has brought this informal network together is its credo that theories of narrative should be regarded as an integral part of cultural analysis. Choosing exemplary case studies from early Habsburg days up to the the wars and genocides of the 20th century and the post-9/11 'War on terror', our volume tries to analyze the relation between representation and conflict, i.e. between narrative constructions, social/historical processes, and cultural agon. Here it is crucial to state that narratives do not simply and passively 'mirror' conflicts as the conventional ‘realistic’ paradigm suggests; they rather provide a symbolic, sense-making matrix, and even a performative dimension. It even can be said that in many cases, narratives make conflicts.

    Untouchable Fictions considers the crisis of literary realism- progressive, rural, regionalist, experimental- in order to derive a literary genealogy for the recent explosion of Dalit ("untouchable" caste) fiction. Drawing on a wide array of fiction from Premchand and Renu in Hindi to Mulk Raj Anand and V.S. Naipaul in English, Gajarawala illuminates the dark side of realist complicity: a hidden aesthetics and politics of caste. How does caste color the novel? What are its formal tendencies? What generic constraints does it produce? Untouchable Fictions juxtaposes the Dalit text, and its radical critique, with a history of progressive literary movements in South Asia. Gajarawala reads Dalit writing dialectically, doing justice to its unique and groundbreaking literary interventions while also demanding that it be read as an integral moment in the literary genealogy of the 20th and 21st century. How might we trace the origins of the rise of Dalit fiction in the critical "realism" of the Progressive Writers Association of the 1930s, or in the gaps laid bare by the peasant novel of the 1950s? And what kind of dialogue does "untouchable caste" writing with its more famous counterpart: the Anglophone fiction of the last few decades? Under Gajarawala’s lens the aesthetic languages of Hindi and English are intertwined and caste becomes a central category of literary analysis. This book, grounded in the fields of postcolonial theory, South Asian literatures, and cultural studies will be important for all readers interested in the problematic relations between aesthetics and politics, between social movements and cultural production. Engaged as it is with contemporary theories of realism and the problem of aesthetics, it would also be of interest to students of English, comparative literature, contemporary Third World literature, and historians of literary movements. More specifically, as a text that considers recent developments in genre theory and South Asian fiction, it would interest scholars of the Indian and Indian Anglophone novel. Finally, this project, as an interrogation of caste politics in the cultural sphere, is an important contribution to the burgeoning field of Dalit studies
