    Beggars, outcasts, urchins, waifs, prostitutes, criminals, convicts, madmen, fallen women, lunatics, degenerates—part reality, part fantasy, these are the grotesque faces that populate the underworld, the dark inverse of our everyday world. Lurking in the mirror that we hold up to our society, they are our counterparts and our doubles, repelling us and yet offering the tantalizing promise of escape. Although these images testify to undeniable social realities, the sordid lower depths make up a symbolic and social imaginary that reflects our fears and anxieties—as well as our desires.In Vice, Crime, and Poverty, Dominique Kalifa traces the untold history of the concept of the underworld and its representations in popular culture. He examines how the myth of the lower depths came into being in nineteenth-century Europe, as biblical figures and Christian traditions were adapted for a world turned upside-down by the era of industrialization, democratization, and mass culture. From the Parisian demimonde to Victorian squalor, from the slums of New York to the sewers of Buenos Aires, Kalifa deciphers the making of an image that has cast an enduring spell on its audience. While the social conditions that created that underworld have changed, Vice, Crime, and Poverty shows that, from social-scientific ideas of the underclass to contemporary cinema and steampunk culture, its shadows continue to haunt us

    After Sept. 11, 2001, George W. Bush declared, "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." Bush’s assertion was not simply jingoist bravado—it encapsulates the civilizationalist moralism that has motivated and defined the United States since its beginning, linking the War on Terror to the nation’s settlement and founding.In Queer Terror, C. Heike Schotten offers a critique of U.S. settler-colonial empire that draws on political, queer, and critical indigenous theory to situate Bush’s either/or moralism and reframe the concept of terrorism. The categories of the War on Terror exemplify the moralizing politics that insulate U.S. empire from critique, render its victims deserving of its abuses, and delegitimize resistance to it as unthinkable and perverse. Schotten provides an anatomy of this moralism, arguing for a new interpretation of biopolitics that is focused on sovereignty and desire rather than racism and biology. This rethinking of biopolitics puts critical political theory of empire in dialogue with the insights of both native studies and queer theory. Building on queer theory’s refusal of sanctity, propriety, and moralisms of all sorts, Schotten ultimately contends that the answer to Bush’s ultimatum is clear: dissidents must reject the false choice he presents and stand decisively against "us," rejecting its moralism and the sanctity of its "life," in order to further a truly emancipatory, decolonizing queer politics

    Nicht erst seit dem Diskursereignis um die Kölner Silvesternacht findet im öffentlichen, medialen, politischen und wissenschaftlichen Raum eine affektbesetzte Auseinandersetzung mit Gefahren und Bedrohungen in der Migrationsgesellschaft statt. Dabei wird von einer vermeintlichen Rückständigkeit und Gefährlichkeit derjenigen ausgegangen, die als »Andere« gelten. In den Diskursen werden ihr Wesen und Körper fokussiert, sodass sich eine Grundlage für die zunehmende Legitimation ihrer Überwachung und Bestrafung ausbildet. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes diskutieren diese europäischen und »westlichen« Praktiken der geschlechterpolitischen Behauptung, Visualisierung und Hervorhebung migrantisierter Anderer und machen ihre Konsequenzen in unterschiedlichen Räumen deutlich

Focusing on contemporary English theatre, this book asks a series of questions: How has theatre contributed to understandings of the North-South divide? What have theatrical treatments of riots offered to wider debates about their causes and consequences? Has theatre been able to intervene in the social unease around Gypsy and Traveller communities? How has theatre challenged white privilege and the persistent denigration of black citizens? In approaching these questions, this book argues that the nation is blighted by a number of internal rifts that pit people against each other in ways that cast particular groups as threats to the nation, as unruly or demeaned citizens - as 'social abjects. It interrogates how those divisions are generated and circulated in public discourse and how theatre offers up counter-hegemonic and resistant practices that question and challenge negative stigmatization, but also how theatre can contribute to the recirculation of problematic cultural imaginaries

"Patricios en contienda explores the ways in which cuadros de costumbres were deployed to nationalize local populations in Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela as part of larger debates about how these national cultures should look like after Gran Colombia (1819-1830) disassembled. By placing cuadros de costumbres in its tumultuous context, this book shows how old elites proud of their Spanish ancestry - Colombian Jose María Vergara y Vergara (1831-1872) or Venezuelan Fermín Toro (1806-1865) - fought newer ones emerging from the War of Independence - Venezuelan general Jose Antonio Páez (1790-1873), his son Ramón Páez (1810-1894) or Italian geographer Agustín Codazzi (1793-1859) among others - in order to gain legitimacy in the transition from monarchical rule to republicanism. These new and old patricians chose different social types to write about and compiled them into albums, memoirs or 'literary museums' in order to create pueblos that reflected their own personal histories and political projects. They did so by adding and subtracting diverse historical experiences homogenized as picturesque types, such as the tobacco roller or the llanero. In response to the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, marginalized members of the elites-such as Colombian Josefa Acevedo de Gómez (1803-1861) or Ecuadorian Dolores Veintimilla (1829-1857) - participated in these public debates about 'costumbres nacionales' by writing about left-out types or repurposing the sketch in order to write lives of indigenous peoples. Ultimately, by situating cuadros de costumbres within the periodicals where they first appeared, Patricios en contienda argues they ought to be read as a political tool - and placed along micro-biographies of illustrious men or serialized novels appearing in the press- through which their authors sought to define the new Republics in the midst of a shifting political landscape were heterogeneous populations were being refashioned as one single national 'pueblo'"--

"Remaindered Life is a feminist analysis of the role that the disposable life-times (and not just labor) of dispossessed peoples play in contemporary modes of accumulation of wealth and power. Neferti X. M. Tadiar provides a conceptual vocabulary and framework for rethinking the dynamics of contemporary global capitalism in terms of the production and consumption of vastly discrepant "life-times" (rather than labor-time), by foregrounding the significant role of disposable life and its forms of social reproduction in a financialized global urban economy, which is directly dependent on permanent war as a mode and strategy of capitalist enterprise. It describes how imperialism continues to secure the vital reproduction of the capital-labor relation through wars of dispossession, which actively waste life (making it disposable) to reap unaccounted gains from the life-making of survival of the colonial and postcolonial peoples it tries to destroy."
