    Chapter 1: Immunity’s Sovereignty -- Chapter 2: The Haitian Exception -- Chapter 3: Algerian Captivity and State Autoimmunity -- Chapter 4: Poe and Democracy’s Biopolitical Immunity -- Chapter 5: Cuba and the Imperial Solution -- Chapter 6: Panic Room Immunity’s Sovereignty and Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century American Literature tracks flashpoint events in U.S. history, constituting a genealogy of the effectiveness and resilience of the concept of immunity in democratic culture. Rick Rodriguez argues that following the American Revolution the former colonies found themselves subject to foreign and domestic threats imperiling their independence. Wars with North African regencies, responses to the Haitian revolution, reactions to the specter and reality of slave rebellion in the antebellum South, and plans to acquire Cuba to ease tensions between the states all constituted immunizing responses that helped define the conceptual and aesthetic protocols by which the U.S. represented itself to itself and to the world’s nations as distinct, exemplary, and vulnerable. Rodriguez examines these events as expressions of an immunitary logic that was—and still is— frequently deployed to legitimate state authority. Rodriguez identifies contradictions in literary texts’ dramatizations of these transnational events and their attending threats, revealing how democracy’s exposure to its own fragility serves as rationale for immunity’s sovereignty. This book shows how early U.S. literature, often conceived as a delivery system for American exceptionalism, is in effect critical of such immunitary discourses

Afterword: Twenty-First-Century Perspectives This book explores the formative role of mobilities in the production of our close relationships, proposing that the tracks—both literal and figurative— we lay down in the process play a crucial role in generating and sustaining intimacy. Working with diaries, journals, and literary texts from the mid- to late-twentieth century, the book pursues this thesis through three phases of the lifecourse: courtship (broadly defined), the middle years of long-term relationships, and bereavement. Building upon the author’s recent research on automobility, the text’s case studies reveal the crucial role played by many different types of transport—including walking—in defining our most enduring relationships. Conceptually, the book draws upon the writings of the philosopher, Henri Bergson, the anthropologist, Tim Ingold, and the geographer, David Seamon, engaging with topical debates in cultural and emotional geography (especially work on landscape, memory, and mourning), mobilities studies, and critical love studies

    Wir interpretieren nicht nur Texte und haben dafür eine besondere „hermeneutische Kunst“ (Schleiermacher) entwickelt, sondern wir interpretieren auch die Welt um uns. Die Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, welche expliziten und impliziten Regeln in der Praxis der Interpretation angewandt werden. Der erste Teil klärt u.a. den Begriff der Interpretation, das Verhältnis von Lesen und Interpretieren und analysiert die traditionelle Metaphorik der Interpretation. Im zweiten Teil werden Paradigmen der Interpretation untersucht: die mantische Deutung von Orakeln und Träumen, die philologische Interpretation literarischer Texte, die alltägliche Deutung einer Physiognomie und die kriminalistische Deutung von Spuren. Im Horizont von Rhetorik, Philologie und Hermeneutik werden in den folgenden Kapiteln antike, mittelalterliche und neuzeitliche, jüdische und christliche Interpretationslehren und danach die neuzeitliche Entwicklung der Hermeneutik als Wissenschaft behandelt.     Günter Grass hat sein Leben lang versucht, Grenzen zu überspringen und profiliert sich seit dem Anfang seiner künstlerischen Laufbahn als provokanter Grenzgänger zwischen zahlreichen ‚Welten‘, ohne diesen eindeutig zuzugehören. Saartje Gobyn zeigt auf, dass Grass auch innerhalb seiner Romane Grenzen überspringt, was in der Grassforschung bisher kaum bemerkt wurde. Weder Grass‘ Figuren noch seine Erzähler sind an ihre ‚Welten‘, in denen sie entworfen werden, gebunden. Sie bewegen sich frei durch die Romanwelten hindurch und erzeugen so häufig Metalepsen: alogische Überschreitungen zwischen der dargestellten Welt und der Welt, in der die Darstellung kreiert wird. Form und Funktion solcher Metalepsen werden in dieser Arbeit analysiert.     Dimensionen der Idylle -- Theorien der Idylle -- Paradigmen der Idylle Die Idylle steht im Spannungsfeld von Kitsch und Katastrophe, das Nils Jablonski durch medienkomparatistische close readings literarischer, filmischer und televisiver Texte untersucht. In der Perspektive einer materialen Topik wird das vielfältige Verkommen der Idylle anhand ihrer Poetizität, Medialität und Serialität analysiert – beginnend bei den Anfängen in der Antike, über die Popularisierung der Idylle im 18. Jahrhundert bis zu gegenwärtigen Filmen und TV-Serien. Die herausgearbeitete Spezifik idyllischer poiesis kennzeichnet zudem die richtungsweisenden Reflexionen zur Idylle um 1800. Mit kritischem Bezug auf die idyllischen Verfahren der Überlagerung, Idealisierung und Beschränkung bei Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Friedrich Schiller und Jean Paul wird die enge gattungstheoretische Bestimmung der Idylle revidiert, um den kulturkonstitutiven Aspekt des materialen Topos strukturell zu erfassen. Kate Haffey argues that queer theory’s recent work on time owes a debt to modernist authors who developed new ways of representing temporality in their texts. By reading a series of early twentieth-century literary texts from modernists like Woolf, Eliot, Faulkner, and Stein alongside contemporary authors, this book examines the way in which modernist writers challenged narrative conventions of time in ways that both illuminate and foreshadow current scholarship on queer temporality. In her analyses of contemporary novelists and critics Michael Cunningham, Jeanette Winterson, Angela Carter, and Eve Sedgwick, Haffey also shows that these modernist temporalities have been reconfigured by contemporary authors to develop new approaches to futurity

Why do we do it? Since time immemorial the answer to these questions, from both the left and the right, has been that work is both a natural necessity and, barring exploitation, a social good. One might criticise its management, its compensation and who benefits from it the most, but never work itself, never work as such. In this book, Alastair Hemmens seeks to challenge these received ideas. Drawing on the new ‘critique-of-value’ school of Marxian critical theory, Hemmens demonstrates that capitalism and its final crisis cannot be properly understood except in terms of the historically specific and socially destructive character of labour. It is from this radical perspective that Hemmens turns to an innovative critical analysis of the rich history of radical French thinkers who, over the past two centuries, have challenged the labour form head on: from the utopian-socialist Charles Fourier, who called for the abolition of the separation between work and play, and Marx’s wayward son-in-law, Paul Lafargue, who demanded The Right to Laziness (1880), to the father of Surrealism, André Breton, who inaugurated a ‘war on work’, and, of course, the French Situationist, Guy Debord, author of the famous graffito, ‘never work’. Ultimately, Hemmens considers normative changes in attitudes to work since the 1960s and the future of anti-capitalist social movements today. This book will be a crucial point of reference for contemporary debates about labour and the anti-work tradition in France

Die bisher in der Forschung gängige Annahme, dass Rührung bzw. Distanz die wichtigsten Werte für den Kitschbegriff sind, werden vom Autor widerlegt. Ausgehend hiervon vergleicht er den Kitsch-Diskurs mit den historischen Vorläuferphänomenen sowie postmodernen Phänomenen wie Camp und Trash und stellt argumentative Parallelen und Wertkongruenzen sowie Unterschiede heraus.     There are ghosts. At least, in "Hamlet" there are. This is an example of a fictional truth, of something true in a fiction. Or so it seems. For, once we broaden our view to all kinds and realms of fiction our ordinary notions are challenged, and intriguing philosophical questions arise. Are there really any fictional truths? How can they be determined? Is everything just interpretation? Can anything be fictional? Could you be part of a fiction? Et cetera. The philosophical literature on fiction typically focusses on the semantics of fictional discourse and the ontology of fictional objects. In contrast, this study explores the nature of fictional truth by analyzing its conceptual structure and by unfolding some of its most important conceptual connections. After reviewing the field and identifying core elements that any theory of fictional truth must accommodate Christian Folde investigates several interrelated issues central to the on-going debates. Building on a clear account of fictional content and a wealth of examples the author offers novel solutions to various problems at the intersection of fictional truth, interpretation, and narration. The book thereby makes contributions to aesthetics, metaphysics and literary theory, among other things, and is thus both of philosophical and interdisciplinary value.

    Dieses Open-Access-Buch geht der Zeitreflexion im Feld der Novellistik nach und ergründet Erzählstrategien und -logiken der literarischen Vertextung von ‚Zeit‘, ihre funktionale Einbindung wie auch ihre selbstreflexive und poetologische Gestaltung in Texten. Die Grundlage bildet ein fundiertes, semiotisches Analyseinstrumentarium. Berücksichtigt wird eine breite Textauswahl mit Werken unter anderem von Büchner, Eichendorff, Gutzkow, Hauff, Hebbel, Mundt, Stifter und Tieck. Den historischen Abschnitt zwischen Goethezeit und Realismus kennzeichnet ein Selbstverständnis als Zwischenphase, in der merklich etwas zu Ende geht, ohne dass bereits etwas Neues begonnen hätte. Verankert ist dieser Problemkomplex in einer epocheneigenen Reflexion von Zeit, deren Spezifik in der Verbreiterung des Zukunftshorizontes und dem Auseinanderklaffen von Zukunftsvorstellung und -realisierung liegt. It explores a wide range of Spanish medical, regulatory and moral discourses, illustrating how such texts inherit, reproduce and propagate an amalgam of Western traditional concepts of female embodiment. It goes on to examine concrete representations of deviant female characters, focusing on the figures of syphilitic prostitutes and physically decayed aged women in literary texts such as Celestina, Lozana andaluza and selected works by Cervantes and Quevedo. Finally, an analysis of the personal testimony of Teresa de Avila, a nun suffering neurological disorders, complements the discussion of early modern women’s disability.

The book articulates a kaleidoscopic range of humanities practices which demonstrate that although recent policy encourages higher education to be entirely motivated by outcomes, fiscal targets, and the acquisition of employability skills, the humanities continue to inspire and aspire beyond these limits.     Dieser im Open Access erscheinende Band nimmt eine bislang kaum beachtete Tendenz der Nachkriegsepik in den Blick:„Ich bin nicht Stiller!“ heißt es in Max Frischs Roman gleich zu Beginn des ersten Teils, der den Titel „Stillers Aufzeichnungen im Gefängnis“ trägt. Der das sagt, nennt sich White, wird aber von seiner Umgebung für Stiller gehalten. Stiller ist mit seinem provokanten Beginn vielleicht der markanteste unter den unzuverlässig erzählten Romanen der deutschsprachigen Nachkriegsliteratur, von denen im Band einige zwischen 1945 und den 1970er Jahren veröffentlichte vorgestellt und analysiert werden, darunter Texte von Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Hugo Loetscher, Peter Weiss, Alfred Andersch, Arno Schmidt, Uwe Johnson, Günter de Bruyn und Fred Wander; aber auch von älteren Autoren, die noch nach dem Krieg publiziert haben, wie Leo Perutz und Thomas Mann. Ein Schwerpunkt der Auswahl liegt darin, die Variabilität des Verfahrens zu zeigen und den theoretischen Randbereich des Begriffs ‚narrative Unzuverlässigkeit‘ auszuleuchten. Er erweist sich als heuristisch fruchtbares Analysetool, mit dem auch Texte gewinnbringend untersucht werden können, die nicht im strengen Sinne unzuverlässig erzählt sind.

He absorbed virtually all topical intellectual trends of his time, adapting them for the needs of what he saw as his primary mission: the modernization of Polish culture. The essays of the volume reassess and contextualize Brzozowski's writings from a distinctly transnational vantage point. They shed light on often surprising and hitherto underrated affinities between Brzozowski and intellectual figures and movements in Eastern and Western Europe. Furthermore, they explore the presence of his ideas in twentieth-century century literary criticism and theory.
