    Some 40 years ago, Pacific anthropology was dominated by debates about ‘women’s wealth’. These exchanges were generated by Annette Weiner’s (1976) critical reappraisal of Bronisław Malinowski’s classic work on the Trobriand Islands, and her observations that women’s production of ‘wealth’ (banana leaf bundles and skirts) for elaborate transactions in mortuary rituals occupied a central role in Trobriand matrilineal cosmology and social organisation. This volume brings the debates about women’s wealth back to the fore by critically revisiting and engaging with ideas about gender and materiality, value, relationality and the social life and agency of things. The chapters, interspersed by three poems, evoke the sinuous materiality of the different objects made by women across the Pacific, and the intimate relationship between these objects of value and sensuous, gendered bodies. In the Epilogue, Professor Margaret Jolly observes how the volume also ‘trace[s] a more abstract sinuosity in the movement of these things through time and place, as they coil through different regimes of value … The eight chapters … trace winding paths across the contemporary Pacific, from the Trobriands in Milne Bay, to Maisin, Wanigela and Korafe in Oro Province, Papua New Guinea, through the islands of Tonga to diasporic Tongan and Cook Islander communities in New Zealand’. This comparative perspective elucidates how women’s wealth is defined, valued and contested in current exchanges, bride-price debates, church settings, development projects and the challenges of living in diaspora. Importantly, this reveals how women themselves preserve the different values and meanings in gift-giving and exchanges, despite processes of commodification that have resulted in the decline or replacement of ‘women’s wealth’.

But what if the ideology of multiculturalism—with its emphasis on authenticity and identifiable cultural difference—is precisely what this literature resists? Transitive Cultures offers a new perspective on transpacific Anglophone literature, revealing how these chameleonic writers enact a variety of hybrid, transnational identities and intimacies. Examining literature from Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, as well as from Southeast Asian migrants in Canada, Hawaii, and the U.S. mainland, this book considers how these authors use English strategically, as a means for building interethnic alliances and critiquing ruling power structures in both Southeast Asia and North America. Uncovering a wealth of texts from queer migrants, those who resist ethnic stereotypes, and those who feel few ties to their ostensible homelands, Transitive Cultures challenges conventional expectations regarding diaspora and minority writers

    ‘The Territorialities of U.S. Imperialism(s)’ sets into relation U.S. imperial and Indigenous conceptions of territoriality as articulated in U.S. legal texts and Indigenous life writing in the 19th century. It analyzes the ways in which U.S. legal texts as “legal fictions” narratively press to affirm the United States’ territorial sovereignty and coherence in spite of its reliance on a variety of imperial practices that flexibly disconnect and (re)connect U.S. sovereignty, jurisdiction and territory. At the same time, the book acknowledges Indigenous life writing as legal texts in their own right and with full juridical force, which aim to highlight the heterogeneity of U.S. national territory both from their individual perspectives and in conversation with these legal fictions. Through this, the book’s analysis contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the coloniality of U.S. legal fictions, while highlighting territoriality as a key concept in the fashioning of the narrative of U.S. imperialism.

    Charles Warren Stoddard (1843–1909) was, during his life, an acclaimed and prolific writer in multiple genres: poetry, travel sketches, personal memoir, and conversion narrative. His most popular works were dispatches primarily from the South Sea Islands but also extended into Palestine, Egypt, and what would become known as Hawai‘i, most of which were published in the San Francisco Chronicle and then collected into books.For the Pleasure of His Company: An Affair of the Misty City, Thrice Told (1903) is Stoddard’s only novel. This new edition, as with other works in Penn Press’s series Q19: The Queer American Nineteenth Century, returns and reframes an important queer literary text to print. Set mostly in and around San Francisco in the late nineteenth century, the novel features a protagonist, Paul Clitheroe, who is an aspiring writer living among the Bohemian artistic circles of that place and time—the same circles Stoddard himself inhabited. The novel is both formally experimental and largely autobiographical. Thus Paul comes into contact, as Stoddard did, with writers, artists, actors, directors, priests, adventurers, and many others as he attempts to begin his career. Bohemian artistic life and erotic experimentation go hand in hand here: Paul has multiple relationships with other men even as he writes a novel that features similar liaisons. At the very end of the story, while on a cruise in the Pacific, Paul impulsively leaves his ship and disappears in a canoe with some young Hawaiian men. This parallels Stoddard’s life too: he spent many long periods of his life in Hawai‘i, where he found the local homoerotic customs to his liking.This Q19 volume also includes three of Stoddard’s Hawaiian travel sketches, which chronicle his intimate personal relationship with a Hawaiian youth he calls Kána-Aná. The volume contains a full critical introduction as well as extensive annotations explaining textual references of various kinds and identifying parallels with Stoddard’s own life

Er wird Page am preußischen Hof, verdingt sich als Soldat, schließt Freundschaft mit dem Verleger Eduard Hitzig, verbringt auf der Flucht vor Napoleons Truppen einen Sommer als Liebhaber Madame de Staëls am Genfer See, erlangt unverhofft Berühmtheit durch seine Erzählung Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte, bereist auf einem Expeditionsschiff den gesamten Erdball, verliert sich fast auf Hawaii und macht sich schließlich als Botaniker einen Namen an der Berliner Universität. Erzählt wird die faszinierende Lebensgeschichte des Schriftstellers, Wissenschaftlers und Weltreisenden Adelbert von Chamisso, einem wachen, unbestechlichen und empfindsamen Geist des 19. Jahrhunderts. Es war der Sommer des Jahres 1791, als Adelbert aus der behüteten Welt des französischen Hochadels herauskatapultiert wurde und eine etwas andere Perspektive kennenlernte. Er hatte mit seinem Bruder Eugène den Vormittag auf einer Wiese hinter dem Schloss verbracht, als sich eine Wespe auf seiner Nasenspitze niederließ und ihn einfach nicht stechen wollte. Adelbert musste schielen, um ihren wippenden Hinterleib zu erkennen, denn er wollte unbedingt sehen, wie der kleine Stachel in seine Haut eindrang. Er interessierte sich für solche Dinge. »Verjag sie!«, rief Eugène, aber Adelbert tat das Gegenteil, er drückte mit seinem Zeigefinger auf die Wespe und ärgerte sie, bis er endlich den Stich spürte. »Tut es sehr weh?« Eugènes untere Gesichtshälfte war mit Spucke verschmiert. »Hat nur kurz gepiekt.« Auf seiner Nasenspitze wuchs ein roter Hügel, und Adelbert schielte angestrengt, um jede Einzelheit des Kraters zu erkennen und später abzeichnen zu können.- Sein Hauslehrer Monsieur Lusignan hatte davon gesprochen, dass die Materie aus winzigen Teilchen besteht, und auf Adelberts Nasenspitze sah es wirklich so aus, als hätte die Wespe einen Teil aus seiner Haut weggenommen. »Es muss doch wehtun!« Eugène, der noch Mädchenkleider trug, raufte sich vor Sorge um seinen Bruder die Haare, während Adelbert ruhig an dem Krater herumdrückte, bis Blut rauskam. Er leckte das Blut von seinem Finger ab. Monsieur Lusignan meinte, das sei das Typische am Menschen: Ein Mensch sei Materie, die sich für Materie interessiert. »Das Blut schmeckt nicht anders als sonst.« Diese Erkenntnis enttäuschte ihn, und am liebsten hätte er sich gleich nochmal stechen lassen, aber die Wespe war natürlich fort.Adelbert hörte seine Mutter rufen. Immer wenn er am Tiefsten in seine Untersuchungen versunken war, rief sie ihn. Aber da seine Schläfen bereits schmerzten, war es vielleicht besser, das Schielen aufzugeben.-

The intermedial confluence of performance elements, sound, body and words instills an oscillating effect of multisensory experience which echoes a deep rooted sense concerned with place, distinct environmental features, and story line. The study appeals to discussions on intermediality, metaphoricity, and to an anthropology of the senses. It outlines practice as research and embodied knowledge as tools to conduct performance analysis.
