    This collection of essays reaffirms the central importance of adopting an intertextual approach to the study of Flavian epic poetry and shows, despite all that has been achieved, just how much still remains to be done on the topic. Most of the contributions are written by scholars who have already made major contributions to the field, and taken together they offer a set of state of the art contributions on individual topics, a general survey of trends in recent scholarship, and a vision of at least some of the paths work is likely to follow in the years ahead. In addition, there is a particular focus on recent developments in digital search techniques and the influence they are likely to have on all future work in the study of the fundamentally intertextual nature of Latin poetry and on the writing of literary history more generally

    The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

    This book examines the textual representations of emotions, fear in particular, through the lens of Stoic thought and their impact on depictions of power, gender, and agency. It first draws attention to the role and significance of fear, and cognate emotions, in the tyrant's psyche, and then goes on to explore how these emotions, in turn, shape the wider narratives. The focus is on the lengthy epics of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Statius' Thebaid, and Silius Italicus' Punica. All three poems are obsessed with men in power with no power over themselves, a marked concern that carries a strong Senecan fingerprint. Seneca's influence on post-Neronian epic discourse can be felt beyond his plays. His Epistles and other prose works prove particularly illuminating for each of the poet's gendered treatment of the relationship between power and emotion. By adopting a Roman Stoic perspective, both philosophical and cultural, this study brings together a cluster of major ideas to draw meaningful connections and unlock new readings

    This collection of essays reaffirms the central importance of adopting an intertextual approach to the study of Flavian epic poetry and shows, despite all that has been achieved, just how much still remains to be done on the topic. Most of the contributions are written by scholars who have already made major contributions to the field, and taken together they offer a set of state of the art contributions on individual topics, a general survey of trends in recent scholarship, and a vision of at least some of the paths work is likely to follow in the years ahead. In addition, there is a particular focus on recent developments in digital search techniques and the influence they are likely to have on all future work in the study of the fundamentally intertextual nature of Latin poetry and on the writing of literary history more generally

    This book examines the textual representations of emotions, fear in particular, through the lens of Stoic thought and their impact on depictions of power, gender, and agency. It first draws attention to the role and significance of fear, and cognate emotions, in the tyrant's psyche, and then goes on to explore how these emotions, in turn, shape the wider narratives. The focus is on the lengthy epics of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Statius' Thebaid, and Silius Italicus' Punica. All three poems are obsessed with men in power with no power over themselves, a marked concern that carries a strong Senecan fingerprint. Seneca's influence on post-Neronian epic discourse can be felt beyond his plays. His Epistles and other prose works prove particularly illuminating for each of the poet's gendered treatment of the relationship between power and emotion. By adopting a Roman Stoic perspective, both philosophical and cultural, this study brings together a cluster of major ideas to draw meaningful connections and unlock new readings

    The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

    Die Flavier haben nach dem Ende der julisch-claudischen Dynastie und den Wirren des Vierkaiserjahres erstaunlich rasch in Rom und im Reich wieder Stabilität hergestellt. Im Mittelpunkt des Sammelbandes, der thematisch auf eine Rostocker Tagung im Jahre 2008 zurückgeht, steht die Frage nach den medialen Strategien, mit deren Hilfe aus ungünstiger Ausgangslage die Krise überwunden und innen- und außenpolitische Prosperität erreicht und vermittelt werden konnte. 18 Beiträge von Forscherinnen und Forschern aus den Bereichen Klassische Philologie, Archäologie und Alte Geschichte untersuchen u. a., wie sich Literatur und Kunst in der flavischen Epoche in die Tradition einschreiben und doch auch ästhetisch neu orientieren, wie sich die Familie der Flavier mittels Selbstdarstellung als Dynastie erschafft und welche Wege die symbolische Kommunikation zwischen dem Kaiserhaus und den Einheiten des Reiches beschreitet. Der interdisziplinäre gemeinsame Ansatz der Fragestellung verknüpft die einzelnen Untersuchungen so, dass ein Bild dieser komplexen, miteinander verwobenen und aufeinander reagierenden Aktivitäten und Vorgänge entsteht. Die Beiträge in deutscher und englischer Sprache sind mit kurzen Zusammenfassungen versehen

    The fall of Nero and the civil wars of 69 CE ushered in an era scarred by the recent conflicts; Flavian literature also inherited a rich tradition of narrating nefas from its predecessors who had confronted and commemorated the traumas of Pharsalus and Actium. Despite the present surge of scholarly interest in both Flavian literary studies and Roman civil war literature, however, the Flavian contribution to Rome's literature of bellum ciuile remains understudied. This volume shines a spotlight on these neglected voices. In the wake of 69 CE, writing civil war became an inescapable project for Flavian Rome: from Statius's fraternas acies and Silius's suicidal Saguntines to the internecine narratives detailed in Josephus's Bellum Iudaicum and woven into Frontinus's exempla, Flavian authors' preoccupation with civil war transcends genre and subject matter. This book provides an important new chapter in the study of Roman civil war literature by investigating the multi-faceted Flavian response to this persistent and prominent theme

    Die Flavier haben nach dem Ende der julisch-claudischen Dynastie und den Wirren des Vierkaiserjahres erstaunlich rasch in Rom und im Reich wieder Stabilität hergestellt. Im Mittelpunkt des Sammelbandes, der thematisch auf eine Rostocker Tagung im Jahre 2008 zurückgeht, steht die Frage nach den medialen Strategien, mit deren Hilfe aus ungünstiger Ausgangslage die Krise überwunden und innen- und außenpolitische Prosperität erreicht und vermittelt werden konnte. 18 Beiträge von Forscherinnen und Forschern aus den Bereichen Klassische Philologie, Archäologie und Alte Geschichte untersuchen u. a., wie sich Literatur und Kunst in der flavischen Epoche in die Tradition einschreiben und doch auch ästhetisch neu orientieren, wie sich die Familie der Flavier mittels Selbstdarstellung als Dynastie erschafft und welche Wege die symbolische Kommunikation zwischen dem Kaiserhaus und den Einheiten des Reiches beschreitet. Der interdisziplinäre gemeinsame Ansatz der Fragestellung verknüpft die einzelnen Untersuchungen so, dass ein Bild dieser komplexen, miteinander verwobenen und aufeinander reagierenden Aktivitäten und Vorgänge entsteht. Die Beiträge in deutscher und englischer Sprache sind mit kurzen Zusammenfassungen versehen.

    "Fides in Flavian literature explores the ideology of "good faith" (fides) during the time of the emperors Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian (69–96 CE), the new imperial dynasty that gained power in the wake of the civil wars of the period. The contributors to this volume consider the significance and semantic range of this Roman value in works that deal in myth, history in prose and verse, and the poetry of contemporary society. Though it does not claim to offer the comprehensive "last word" on fides in Flavian Rome, it aims to show that fides in this period was subjected to a particularly striking and special brand of contestation and re-conceptualization, used to interrogate the broad cultural changes and anxieties of the Flavian period, as well as connect to a republican and imperial past. The editors argue that fides was both a vehicle for reconciliation and a means to test the nature of "good faith" in the wake of a devastating and divisive period of Roman history."
