This multi-disciplinary essay collection critically examines conditions and representations of old age and aging in Eastern and Southeastern Europe from various perspectives of the humanities and social sciences. By shedding light on these culturally specific contexts, the contributions widen our understanding of the aging process in all its diversity and demonstrate that a shift in perspectives might in fact challenge a number of taken-for-granted positions and presumptions of Aging Studies

    As a writer, critic, and philosopher, StanisÊaw Brzozowski (1878–1911) left a lasting imprint on Polish culture. He absorbed virtually all topical intellectual trends of his time, adapting them for the needs of what he saw as his primary mission: the modernization of Polish culture. The essays of the volume reassess and contextualize Brzozowski's writings from a distinctly transnational vantage point. They shed light on often surprising and hitherto underrated affinities between Brzozowski and intellectual figures and movements in Eastern and Western Europe. Furthermore, they explore the presence of his ideas in twentieth-century century literary criticism and theory.

    Der Krieg Russlands gegen Napoleon im Jahr 1812 lieferte einen entscheidenden Impuls für die Herausbildung der russischen nationalen Identität. Anhand der Entwicklung der russischen historischen Prosa sowie am Beispiel der bisher kaum untersuchten pädagogischen, populärwissenschaftlichen und literarischen Geschichtsdarstellungen im Jubiläumsjahr 1912 lassen sich unterschiedliche Funktionen des Gedenkens an den »Vaterländischen Krieg« in Russland 100 Jahre später aufzeigen. Konstantin Rapps Analyse gewährt einen Einblick in die Konstruktion von Eigen- und Fremdbildern und vermittelt einen differenzierteren Blick auf das Verhältnis von Russland und dem Westen und somit auch auf aktuelle politische Prozesse

    Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics

It focuses on both the discourse on criminality and thus the conceptualisation of criminality in various disciplines (criminology, psychiatry, and literature), and penal practice, that is, different aspects of criminal law and anti-crime policy.     Die postkommunistische Literatur Rumäniens wirft entscheidende Fragen der europäischen Zugehörigkeit, der gesellschaftlichen Transformation sowie der Selbst- und Fremdverortung in transnationaler Perspektive auf. Miruna Bacali präsentiert einen innovativen Umgang mit den literarischen Quellentexten, die im Sinne der Geschichtswissenschaft analysiert werden. Sie werden so zu Material für gesellschaftspolitisch relevante Diskurse, die weit über das Literarische hinausgehen. Auch bindet die Fallstudie soziologische, kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliche Theorieansätze mit ein, wodurch Transfer und Vergleichbarkeit über Disziplingrenzen hinaus gewährleistet werden.

    Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics.

    As a writer, critic, and philosopher, Stanisław Brzozowski (1878-1911) left a lasting imprint on Polish culture. He absorbed virtually all topical intellectual trends of his time, adapting them for the needs of what he saw as his primary mission: the modernization of Polish culture. The essays of the volume reassess and contextualize Brzozowski's writings from a distinctly transnational vantage point. They shed light on often surprising and hitherto underrated affinities between Brzozowski and intellectual figures and movements in Eastern and Western Europe. Furthermore, they explore the presence of his ideas in twentieth-century century literary criticism and theory.

    The ubiquitous »cultural turn« of the 1990s did not spare the thinkers of economics - however, at the same time, economic topics have gained a new importance in cultural studies. This volume focuses on cultures of economy in regions of former Yugoslavia as part of Southeastern Europe, supported by theoretical perspectives. It examines narratives and poetics of economy in literature, film, and art, as well as in public discourse. The contributors spotlight different historical periods: the late 19th and the early 20th centuries, Socialist Yugoslavia and the transitional and neoliberal period since the 1990s.

    Long description: The exploration of what May Sarton calls the »foreign country of old age« usually does not go far beyond the familiar: the focus of Aging Studies has thus far clearly rested upon North America and Western Europe. This multi-disciplinary essay collection critically examines conditions and representations of old age and aging in Eastern and Southeastern Europe from various perspectives of the humanities and social sciences. By shedding light on these culturally specific contexts, the contributions widen our understanding of the aging process in all its diversity and demonstrate that a shift in perspectives might in fact challenge a number of taken-for-granted positions and presumptions of Aging Studies Biographical note: Dagmar Gramshammer-Hohl (PhD) is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Graz, Austria. She specializes in literary and cultural studies with a focus on Russian literature, gender, migration and age/aging studies. D. Gramshammer-Hohl was granted the Prof. Paul Petry Award in Aging Studies in 1998; she is an alumna of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a member of the European Network in Aging Studies. Oana Ursulesku (M.A.) is a Ph.D. student at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and the University of Graz, Austria. Her focus in research is on literary studies and plurilingualism

    Long description: Der Krieg Russlands gegen Napoleon im Jahr 1812 lieferte einen entscheidenden Impuls für die Herausbildung der russischen nationalen Identität. Anhand der Entwicklung der russischen historischen Prosa sowie am Beispiel der bisher kaum untersuchten pädagogischen, populärwissenschaftlichen und literarischen Geschichtsdarstellungen im Jubiläumsjahr 1912 lassen sich unterschiedliche Funktionen des Gedenkens an den »Vaterländischen Krieg« in Russland 100 Jahre später aufzeigen. Konstantin Rapps Analyse gewährt einen Einblick in die Konstruktion von Eigen- und Fremdbildern und vermittelt einen differenzierteren Blick auf das Verhältnis von Russland und dem Westen und somit auch auf aktuelle politische Prozesse Biographical note: Konstantin Rapp (M.A.), geb. 1983, ist Slavist und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 1015 »Muße. Grenzen, Raumzeitlichkeit, Praktiken« der Universität Freiburg. Er forscht zu den unterschiedlichen Formen der Konzeptualisierung von Muße in der Sowjetunion der 1920er bis 1930er Jahre im Kontext der marxistischen Vorstellungen von Arbeit und Freizeit. Weitere Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Prozesse der Kanonbildung in der russischen Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts und die deutsch-russische Universitätsgeschichte
