    Narratives of Catastrophe tells the story of the relationship between catastrophe, in the senses of "down turn" and "break," and narration as "recounting" in the senses suggested by the French term récit in selected texts by three leading writers from Africa. Qader's book begins by exploring the political implications of narrating catastrophic historical events. Through careful readings of singular literary texts on the genocide in Rwanda and on Tazmamart, a secret prison in Morocco under the reign of Hassan II, Qader shows how historical catastrophes enter language and how this language is marked by the catastrophe it recounts. Not satisfied with the extra-literary characterizations of catastrophe in terms of numbers, laws, and naming, she investigates the catastrophic in catastrophe, arguing that catastrophe is always an effect of language andthought,. The récit becomes a privileged site because the difficulties of thinking and speaking about catastrophe unfold through the very movements of storytelling.This book intervenes in important ways in the current scholarship in the field of African literatures. It shows the contributions of African literatures in elucidating theoretical problems for literary studies in general, such as storytelling's relationship to temporality, subjectivity, and thought. Moreover, it addresses the issue of storytelling, which is of central concern in the context of African literatures but still remains limited mostly to the distinction between the oral and the written. The notion of récit breaks with this duality by foregrounding the inaugural temporality of telling and of writing as repetition.The final chapters examine catastrophic turns within the philosophical traditions of the West and in Islamic thought, highlighting their interconnections and differences

In Training for Catastrophe, author Lindsay Thomas shows how our security regime reimagines plausibility to focus on unlikely and even unreal events rather than probable ones. With an in-depth focus on preparedness (a pivotal, emergent national security paradigm since 9/11) she explores how fiction shapes national security. Thomas finds fiction at work in unexpected settings, from policy documents and workplace training manuals to comics and video games. Through these texts--as well as plenty of science fiction--she examines the philosophy of preparedness, interrogating the roots of why it asks us to treat explicitly fictional events as real. Thomas connects this philosophical underpinning to how preparedness plays out in contemporary politics, emphasizing how it uses aesthetic elements like realism, genre, character, and plot to train people both to regard some disasters as normal and to ignore others. Training for Catastrophe makes an important case for how these documents elicit consent and compliance. Thomas draws from a huge archive of texts--including a Centers for Disease Control comic about a zombie apocalypse, the work of Audre Lorde, and the political thrillers of former national security advisor Richard Clarke--to ask difficult questions about the uses and values of fiction. Dieses fundamentale Kontingenzproblem der Sinngebung steht im Fokus vieler literarischer Katastrophendiskurse. Dieses Buch untersucht, wie die Literatur das Kontingenzproblem im Rahmen von Katastrophenerfahrungen anschaulich macht, etablierte Sinngebungsmuster referiert und schließlich eigene Entwürfe der Sinngebung entwickelt. Im komparatistischen Vergleich werden mehr als 20 faktuale und fiktionale Texte über drei 'Jahrhundertkatastrophen' analysiert: das Erdbeben von Lissabon, die Shoah und die Anschläge vom 11. September. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Sinngebung bis heute vornehmlich als Kontingenzabwehr gedacht wird. Es findet jedoch eine Verschiebung auf der Ebene der Zuständigkeit statt: Sinngebung wird zunehmend im Kontext von individuellen Handlungsspielräumen gedacht. Die Studie erarbeitet die allgegenwärtige Problemkonstellation Katastrophe und Kontingenz erstmals systematisch im historischen und komparatistischen Vergleich und leistet damit einen zentralen Beitrag zur vergleichenden Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte

    "(Eco)Anxiety in Nuclear Holocaust Fiction and Climate Fiction: Doomsday Clock Narratives demonstrates that disaster fiction-nuclear holocaust and climate change alike-allows us to unearth and anatomize contemporary psychodynamics, and enables us to identify pre-traumatic stress as the common denominator of seemingly unrelated types of texts. These Doomsday Clock Narratives argue that earth's demise is soon and certain. They are set after some catastrophe and depict people waiting for an even worse catastrophe to come. References to geology are particularly important-in descriptions of the landscape, the emphasis falls on waste and industrial bric-a-brac, which is seen through the eyes of a future, post-human archaeologist. Their protagonists have the uncanny feeling that the countdown has already started, and they are coping with both traumatic memories and pre-traumatic stress. Readings of novels by Walter M. Miller, Nevil Shute, John Christopher, J.G. Ballard, George Turner, Paolo Bacigalupi, Maggie Gee, Ruth Ozeki and Yoko Tawada demonstrate that the authors are both indebted to a century-old tradition and inventively looking for new ways of expressing the Pre-TSS common in contemporary society.     This book examines the writing of catastrophe, mass death, and collective loss in twentieth-century literature and criticism. With particular focus on texts by Woolf, Benjamin, and Sebald, it engages the centuryGs preoccupation with Gworld-ending,G a mixed rhetoric of totality and rupture, finitude and survival, the end and its posthumous remainders. The spectacle of world-ending proliferates as a form of desire, an ambivalent compulsion to consume and outlive the end of all. In conversation with discussions of the centuryGs passion for the real, the author reads the centuryGs obsession with negative forms of ending and outcome. Drawing connections between current interest in trauma and the sublime, she reframes the terms of the modernist experiment and its aesthetics from the lens of a late sublime.
