Identity, Memory, and Technoscientific Ethics: Limits, Edges, and Borders in The Forbidden Zone This collection of essays explores current thematic and aesthetic directions in fictional science narratives in different genres, predominantly novels, but also poetry, film, and drama. The ten case studies, covering a range of British and American texts from the late twentieth to the twenty-first centuries, reflect the diversity of representations of science in contemporary fiction, including psychopharmacology and neuropathology, quantum physics and mathematics, biotechnology, genetics, and chemical weaponry. This collection considers how texts engage with science and technology to explore relations between bodies and minds, how such connectivities shape conceptions and narrations of the human, and how the speculative view of science fiction features alongside realist engagements with the Victorian period and modernism. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, contributors offer new insights into narrative engagement with science and its place in life today, in times past, and in times to come

Chapter 1: Introduction – Old and New Diversity -- Chapter 2: Multicultural Poetry – On Filigrees, Grafting and Mirrors -- Chapter 3: The Multicultural Memoir – A Politics of Recognition for the Individual -- Chapter 4: The Multicultural Novel, Part 1 – Britain Reimagined -- Chapter 5: The Multicultural Novel, Part 2 – Bordered Britain -- Chapter 6: The Multicultural Short Story and Intercultural Conversation -- Chapter 7: Conclusion – The Public Good of (British) Multicultural Literature This book explores contemporary British multicultural multi-genre literature. Considering socio-political and philosophical ideas about British multiculturalism, superdiversity and conviviality, Ulla Rahbek studies a broad range of texts by writers from across the majority-minority divide. The text focuses on figurative registers and metaphorical richness in multicultural poetry and investigates the interlocked issue of recognition, representation and identity in memoirs. Rahbek analyses how twenty-first-century British multicultural novels both envision and reimagine an inclusive nation and thematise the detrimental effects of individual exclusion on characters’ pursuits of the good life. She observes the ways that short stories pivot on ambivalent encounters and intercultural dialogue, and she reflects on the public good of multicultural literature

The Quality of Qualia: Truth and Ethics in Reflexive Double Narratives -- 4. Joyful Solipsism: Implied Multiple Narratives in the Contemporary Novel -- 5. Double Memories: Multiple Versions of Memories as a Way to Understand Characters and Ourselves -- 6. Conclusion: A Dark Turn and Other Manifestations Multiple Narratives, Versions and Truth in the Contemporary Novel considers the shifting perception of truth in fiction. Nicholas Frangipane examines the narrative technique of telling multiple versions of the same sets of events, presenting both true and false versions of the events within a fictional work. This book looks closely at these “Reflexive Double Narratives” in order to understand the way many contemporary writers have attempted to work past postmodernism without forgetting its lessons. Frangipane explores how writers like Ian McEwan, Yann Martel and Alice Munro have departed from the radical experimentation of their predecessors and instead make sincere attempts to find ways that fictional writing can reveal enduring truths, and in so doing, redefine the meaning of “truth” itself and signal the emergence of post-postmodernism

Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Missing Mothers -- Chapter 3: The Overbearing Mother -- Chapter 4: The Inconsequential Mother -- Chapter 5: The New Mother Maternal Representations in Twenty-First Century Broadway Musicals: Stage Mothers analyzes Broadway productions within the context of their presentation and assessment of motherhood and the variety of roles for mother figures. Using a frame of feminist and psychoanalytical positions, Gina MacKenzie establishes, defines, and interprets mother figures in contemporary Broadway, according to original categorizations of the absent, inconsequential, and overbearing mothers. MacKenzie considers how and why commercial representation of mother figures are limited and predominantly negative, even as fiction, poetry, and other forms of drama offer a much wider and progressive view of the varieties of motherhood possible in society, asserting the need for greater representation of mother figures in commercial musical theatre today

    1. Introduction: Young Adults, Reading, and Young Adult Reading -- 2. Reading in School -- 3. Misreading the Classics: Gender, Genre, and Agency in YA Romance -- 4. “Dreaming Themselves into Existence”: Reading and Race -- 5. Magic, Prophetic, and Sacred Books: Making Communities of Readers -- 6. Reading, Resistance, and Political Agency -- 7. Epilogue: Reading Reading in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows This book examines the way young adult readers are constructed in a variety of contemporary young adult fictions, arguing that contemporary young adult novels depict readers as agents. Reading, these novels suggest, is neither an unalloyed good nor a dangerous ploy, but rather an essential, occasionally fraught, by turns escapist and instrumental, deeply pleasurable, and highly contentious activity that has value far beyond the classroom skills or the specific content it conveys. After an introductory chapter that examines the state of reading and young adult fiction today, the book examines novels that depict reading in school, gendered and racialized reading, reading magical and religious books, and reading as a means to developing civic agency. These examinations reveal that books for teens depict teen readers as doers, and suggest that their ability to read deeply, critically, and communally is crucial to the development of adolescent agency

Disposability, Criminality and Lawlessness in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Beasts of the Southern Wild and When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts 'This immensely thought-provoking study engages with the representation of Katrina across a variety of narrative forms — from the literary fiction of Jesmyn Ward to the cinema of Werner Herzog. In doing so, it reveals a series of compelling links between a diverse selection of texts and a powerful, under-scrutinized connection between Katrina, 9/11 and that preceding disaster’s divisive legacies. This is urgent yet nuanced scholarship and Keeble navigates a path through complex debates about trauma, memory and nationhood in an unfailingly articulate and insightful fashion.' — Samuel Thomas, Associate Professor in the Department of English Studies, Durham University, UK 'Bringing race, place and politics into painful focus, Arin Keeble’s Narratives of Hurricane Katrina in Context offers an excellent and authoritative study of Katrina’s cultural legacy.' — James Annesley, Senior Lecturer in American Literature, Newcastle University, UK 'In Narratives of Hurricane Katrina in Context, Arin Keeble provides a vital examination of the “slow violence” linking cultural responses to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. Approaching both events with a characteristic clearness and sensitivity, he expands a new and necessary field of studies that works harder to contextualise US responses to these “national” tragedies through the interrogative frameworks of neoliberalism, cultural trauma, and multidirectional memory.' — Rachel Sykes, Lecturer in Contemporary American Literature, University of Birmingham, UK

Beyond Genre: Lyrics, Literature, and the Influence of Bob Dylan’s Transgressive Creative Imagination Polyvocal Bob Dylan brings together an interdisciplinary range of scholarly voices to explore the cultural and aesthetic impact of Dylan’s musical and literary production. Significantly distinct in approach, each chapter draws attention to the function and implications of certain aspects of Dylan's work—his tendency to confuse, question, and subvert literary, musical, and performative traditions. Polyvocal Bob Dylan places Dylan’s textual and performative art within and against a larger context of cultural and literary studies. In doing so, it invites readers to reassess how Dylan’s Nobel Prize–winning work fits into and challenges traditional conceptions of literature

Utilizing a transnational lens, this volume reveals how the fantastic is ready-made for exploring, in non-literal terms, the complex and problematic nature of intercultural engagement

“Where are they flocking from?” -- It’s a Free World?: Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Media and Film -- Representing Them: Eastern Europeans in Contemporary British Fiction.-Representing ‘Us’: Eastern Europe Writes Back -- New Alliances?: Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Black British Writing -- Eastern Europe and Race: Cosmopolitanism and the Post-Yugoslav Condition in Dubravka Ugrešić’s Essays -- Goodbye, New Europeans? Eastern Europeans in Contemporary Literature and Culture: Imagining New Europe provides a comprehensive study of the way in which contemporary writers, filmmakers, and the media have represented the recent phenomenon of Eastern European migration to the UK and Western Europe following the enlargement of the EU in the 21st century, the social and political changes after the fall of communism, and the Brexit vote. Exploring the recurring figures of Eastern Europeans as a new reservoir of cheap labour, the author engages with a wide range of both mainstream and neglected authors, films, and programmes, including Rose Tremain, John Lanchester, Marina Lewycka, Polly Courtney, Dubravka Ugrešić, Kapka Kassabova, Kwame Kwei-Armah, Mike Phillips, It’s a Free World, Gypo, Britain’s Hardest Workers, The Poles are Coming, and Czech Dream. Analyzing the treatment of Eastern Europeans as builders, fruit pickers, nannies, and victims of sex trafficking, and ways of resisting the stereotypes, this is an important intervention into debates about Europe, migration, and postcommunist transition to capitalism, as represented in multiple contemporary cultural texts

Focusing chiefly on twentieth- and twenty-first century texts, with acknowledgement of historical and philosophical contexts, the essays address representation, narrative form, the work of the poetic, perception and experience. Major genres and forms are discussed, and authors as diverse as George Mackay Brown, Kathleen Jamie, Ken McLeod and Kei Miller are presented through theoretically informed, historically contextualized close readings. Additionally considering the role of dialect and region in the poetry and fiction of modern Scotland, the volume argues for an appreciation of the cultural diversity of Scottish writers while highlighting the overarching presence of a connection between self and world, subject and place within Scottish literature

As popular science comes to assume an ever greater cultural significance, contemporary authors are engaging in new ways with ideas that it disseminates. A new literary phenomenon is emerging, in which the focus on language-based theories of the self and the world that has been predominant in the latter half of the previous century is making way for a renewed commitment to the material facts, both of human existence and the universe beyond subjectivity. The book analyses the work of Martin Amis, William Boyd, David Lodge, Richard Powers, Michel Houellebecq, Jonathan Franzen, Margaret Atwood, and Ian McEwan, revealing the ways in which these ‘third culture novels’ negotiate the relationship between literature and science

It sells well and is read widely, however the men's novel is uncharted academic territory - until now. The first study on what has now become a permanent feature of German bestseller lists

This book mobilises the concept of kitsch to investigate the tensions around the representation of genocide in international graphic novels that focus on the Holocaust and the genocides in Armenia, Rwanda, and Bosnia. In response to the predominantly negative readings of kitsch as meaningless or inappropriate, this book offers a fresh approach that considers how some of the kitsch strategies employed in these works facilitate an affective interaction with the genocide narrative. These productive strategies include the use of the visual metaphors of the animal and the doll figure and the explicit and excessive depictions of mass violence. The book also analyses where kitsch still produces problems as it critically examines depictions of perpetrators and the visual and verbal representations of sexual violence. Furthermore, it explores how graphic novels employ anti-kitsch strategies to avoid the dangers of excess in dealing with genocide. The Representation of Genocide in Graphic Novels will appeal to those working in comics-graphic novel studies, popular culture studies, and Holocaust and genocide studies

This open access book explores the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts that have made anti-poverty the core of Chinese society since Liberation in 1949, and why poverty alleviation measures evolved from the simplistic aid of the 1950s to Xi Jinping’s precision poverty alleviation and its goal of eliminating absolute poverty by 2020. The book also addresses the implications of China’s experience for other developing nations tackling not only poverty but such issues as pandemics, rampant urbanization and desertification exacerbated by global warming. The first of three parts draws upon interviews of rural and urban Chinese from diverse backgrounds and local and national leaders. These interviews, conducted in even the remotest areas of the country, offer candid insights into the challenges that have forced China to continually evolve its programs to resolve even the most intractable cases of poverty. The second part explores the historic, cultural and philosophical roots of old China’s meritocratic government and how its ancient Chinese ethics have led to modern Chinese socialism’s stance that “poverty amidst plenty is immoral”. Dr. Huang Chengwei, one of China’s foremost anti-poverty experts, explains the challenges faced at each stage as China’s anti-poverty measures evolved over 70 years to emphasize “enablement” over “aid” and to foster bottom-up initiative and entrepreneurialism, culminating in Xi Jinping’s precision poverty alleviation. The book also addresses why national economic development alone cannot reduce poverty; poverty alleviation programs must be people-centered, with measurable and accountable practices that reach even to household level, which China has done with its “First Secretary” program. The third part explores the potential for adopting China’s practices in other nations, including the potential for replicating China’s successes in developing countries through such measures as the Belt and Road Initiative. This book also addresses prevalent misperceptions about China’s growing global presence and why other developing nations must address historic, systemic causes of poverty and inequity before they can undertake sustainable poverty alleviation measures of their own.
