    "Les cultures urbaines sont le fruit d'apports divers puisqu'elles sont en partie importées des États-Unis (notamment par le biais de la culture hip-hop) et influencées par les cultures d'Afrique sub-saharienne, du Maghreb ou de la Caraïbe. Les grandes villes, mais aussi leurs banlieues deviennent donc le laboratoire majeur de ce phénomène culturel. La littérature urbaine en particulier se donne à lire comme une littérature résolument militante dans la mesure où elle renferme des éléments permettant d'aborder la dimension postcoloniale de la France d'aujourd'hui. En effet, les romans urbains abordent entre autres le passé colonial de la France ainsi que ses répercussions dans la société contemporaine, redéfinissant ainsi ce qu'être français(e) signifie au début du XXIe siècle. Ce livre analyse en particulier la dimension historique de cette littérature indispensable à une meilleure compréhension de ce mouvement littéraire qui émerge après les émeutes de 2005 et qui donne un nouveau souffle au monde littéraire français."--Page 4 of cover

Anxieties about hygiene, pollution, purity, the home, class, gender roles, patrilineal power and the state of the Empire rippled through British fiction. The new man of the house was trying, often desperately, to hold onto the old order, changing even more rapidly as the 20th century and modernist fiction arrived. This study traces suburban masculinities in popular genres--speculative fiction, comic fiction and detective fiction--and in literary works from the late-Victorian era to the start of the First World War"--
