The concept of «open work» – informed by systems theory, cybernetics, relativism, pragmatism and other influential disciplines of the time – was used by Eco to reconsider the work of art as a site for interactivity, collaboration and intermediality. Starting from this perspective, this book reconstructs the history of Italian electronic literature, looking at creative practices across literature, electronic and digital media from the early days of computers to the social media age. It examines how Italian writers, poets, literary critics and intellectuals have responded to each phase of the digital revolution, by enacting «poetics of openness» and «politics of intermediality». Case studies include Nanni Balestrini, Gianni Toti, Italo Calvino, Caterina Davinio, Wu Ming, Michela Murgia, Francesco Pecoraro, Roberto Saviano, Tommaso Pincio, Fabio Viola, Fabrizio Venerandi and Enrico Colombini. In some cases, literary experimentation with new technologies has taken a clear polemical stance towards mass media, globalisation, information society and late capitalism, in order to challenge and/or reconfigure artistic or social ontologies. In others, digital technologies have been used to enhance and extend the parameters and «languages» of literature.

    Angaben zur beteiligten Person Scholler: Prof. Dr. Dietrich Scholler lehrt Literaturwissenschaft am Romanischen Seminar der Universität Mainz. Hypertextliteratur besitzt einen transitorischen Doppelcharakter: Sie ist die vorbeiziehende und zugleich die überholte Literatur. Das zeigt Dietrich Scholler in seiner Studie. Der Autor widmet sich zunächst der Genese von Hypertexten: Was sind die historisch-systematischen Grundlagen hypertextueller bzw. hypermedialer Vertextungsverfahren? Anschließend analysiert er Wege und Formen der Hypertextliteratur in Italien und Frankreich im Detail. Wie lassen sich die digitalen Literaturen in der Literaturgeschichte verorten? Wie sind die Cyberwelten und hypertextuellen Merkmale am literarischen Situationsaufbau beteiligt? Im dritten Teil geht es um die Rückwirkung von hypertextuellen Effekten auf die jüngere Printliteratur. Welche Wechselwirkungen ergeben sich durch das Zusammenspiel zwischen erzählter Geschichte und pseudo-altermedialer Diskursivierung?; The dual nature of hypertext literature is also a transient one: It is poetry and fiction that are at the same time overtaking and overtaken. This is what Dietrich Scholler has demonstrated in his study. The author starts by asking about the genesis of hypertexts: What are the historical systematic fundamentals of hypertextual or hypermedial narrative processes? Next, he conducts a detailed analysis of the methods and forms of Italian and French hypertext literature. How do we locate digital literary writings in the history of literature? How do the cyber worlds and hypertextual characteristics participate in creating narrative settings? The third part is concerned with the repercussions of hypertextual effects on more recent print literature. Which mutual interactions result from the interplay between the narrated story and pseudo-altermedial discursivity? These questions and more are broached.

The concept of «open work» – informed by systems theory, cybernetics, relativism, pragmatism and other influential disciplines of the time – was used by Eco to reconsider the work of art as a site for interactivity, collaboration and intermediality. Starting from this perspective, this book reconstructs the history of Italian electronic literature, looking at creative practices across literature, electronic and digital media from the early days of computers to the social media age. It examines how Italian writers, poets, literary critics and intellectuals have responded to each phase of the digital revolution, by enacting «poetics of openness» and «politics of intermediality». Case studies include Nanni Balestrini, Gianni Toti, Italo Calvino, Caterina Davinio, Wu Ming, Michela Murgia, Francesco Pecoraro, Roberto Saviano, Tommaso Pincio, Fabio Viola, Fabrizio Venerandi and Enrico Colombini. In some cases, literary experimentation with new technologies has taken a clear polemical stance towards mass media, globalisation, information society and late capitalism, in order to challenge and/or reconfigure artistic or social ontologies. In others, digital technologies have been used to enhance and extend the parameters and «languages» of literature.
