    Die AuseinanderSetzung mit der Möglichkeit bzw. Unmöglichkeit von Identität vor dem Hintergrund postmoderner Auflösungs- und Entgrenzungserscheinungen ist prägend für den zeitgenössischen britischen Roman: Das individuelle Subjekt durchlebt in der Konsequenz von Unbestimmtheit, Fragmentarisierung und Enthierarchisierung eine existentielle Krise. Dies lässt sich negativ gewendet als Ratlosigkeit angesichts des Verlusts von sinnhafter Tiefe und tradierten Sicherheiten lesen - oder aber als positive Eröffnung neuer Manifestationsräume von Sinn und Ermöglichung produktiver Vielstimmigkeit deuten. Ausgehend von Überlegungen zur narrativen Verfasstheit von Identität Setzt sich der vorliegende Band in Detailinterpretationen von Romanen Peter Ackroyds, Iain Banks´ und A. S. Byatts exemplarisch mit der Frage auseinander, inwiefern im jüngeren britischen Roman eine Entwicklungslinie weg von einer ´diffusen´ hin zu einer ´präzisen´ Postmoderne nachgezeichnet werden kann.
