    "Drawing on a global history of politicized writing and the inter- and post-war artistry and critical-theoretical reflections that legacy inspired, this book explores literature’s utility as a mode of activism and aesthetic engagement with the political challenges of the current moment. The question of literature’s ‘uses’ has recently become a key topic of academic and public debate. Paradoxically, however, these conversations have often tended to bypass the rich history of engagements with literature’s distinctly political uses that forms such a powerful current of 20th- and 21st-century artistic production and critical-theoretical reflection. The Political Uses of Literature reopens discussion of literature’s political and activist genealogies along several interrelated lines: As a foundational moment, it draws attention to the important body of interwar politicized literature and to debates about literature’s ability to intervene in social reality. It then traces the mobilization of related conversations and artistic practices across several subsequent historical conjunctures, most notably the committed literature of the 1960s and our own present. In mapping out these geographically and artistically diverse traditions – including case studies from the Americas, Europe, Africa, India and Russia – contributors advance critical discussions in the field, making questions pertaining to politicized art newly compelling to a much broader and more diverse readership. Most importantly, this volume insists on the need to think about literature’s political uses today – at a time when it has become increasingly difficult to imagine any kind of political efficacy for art, even as the need to do so is growing more and more acute. Literature may not proffer easy answers to our political problems, but as this collection suggests, the writing of the 20th century holds out aesthetic resources [...]."

    Zusammenfassung: This volume explores the state of literary theory today, decades after the repeatedly proclaimed end of theory. It builds on the idea that theory is historically constituted as it is “always becoming something else” as Leslie Fiedler claimed in the 1950s, arguing that the historical constitution of theory relies on theory’s procedural nature. In order to assess theory’s procedural challenge to the fundamental notions that all the disciplines within an episteme have brought to the fore, it addresses these questions: What are the procedures theory has relied on? Are they a secret to its resistance, or is resistance its primary procedure? And if so, a resistance to what? Secondly, if resistance were theory’s principal vehicle, at which point does resistance, conceptualized only procedurally (as resisting something, questioning anything, criticizing whatever), display hallmarks of a disciplinary closure that must call for new resistances, and perhaps for a fundamentally another kind? The book turns to what theory does in order to avoid a partial answer to what theory is. Davor Beganović is Lecturer in the Slavic Department of the University of Tübingen and a Research Fellow at the Slavic Department of the University of Münster, Germany. He is the author of Pripovijedanje bez kraja: "Hrvatska pripovjedačka Bosna" od Ive Andrića do Nebojše Lujanovića (2022). Zrinka Božić is an Associate Professor of Literary Theory and History in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. She is the author of The Community in Avant-Garde Literature and Politics (2022). Andrea Milanko is an Assistant Professor of Literary Theory and History in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, Croatia. She is the author of Pripovjedna proza Slobodana Novaka (forthcoming). Ivana Perica is Postdoctoral Researcher at the Leibniz Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL), Berlin, Germany, and author of Die privat-öffentliche Achse des Politischen: Das Unvernehmen zwischen Hannah Arendt und Jacques Rancière (2016)

    In den gegenwärtigen Debatten über politische Verantwortung und Wirkungsmöglichkeiten kultureller Formen wie Literatur und Theater, Film, Fernsehen und neue Medien, Performance-Kunst und Street Art ist ein gewandeltes, zivilgesellschaftlich erweitertes Verständnis des Politischen auffällig, das auch den erstarrten Dualismus von Engagement und Autonomie der Künste neu infrage stellt. Das Politische in der Literatur wird nicht mehr wie lange Zeit üblich von der ästhetischen Eigenart abgegrenzt und daher auch nicht auf unmittelbare und direkte Thematisierung impliziter politischer Bezüge reduziert. Im Mittelpunkt der Debatten stehen häufig die nicht zuletzt durch die jüngsten Medienentwicklungen, insbesondere die sozialen Netzwerke, bedingten Veränderungen im Verhältnis von Privatheit und Öffentlichkeit, vor allem die Sorge um den Schutz der Privatsphäre vor allgegenwärtiger Überwachung und auch ästhetisch neuartige Strategien in der Herstellung von Öffentlichkeit für existenziell bedeutsame Problemlagen. Im nachfolgenden Beitrag soll gefragt werden, inwieweit das Verhältnis zwischen dem ästhetisch Eigenwertigen und dem politisch Wirkmächtigen auch in zeitgenössischen Literaturdebatten zur Sprache kommt, wie auch, welchen Anteil Literaturtheorie und -ästhetik an den Auseinandersetzungen um einen komplexeren Begriff des Politischen haben.

    Brecht zufolge birgt die Frage nach den Verpflichtungen der Kunst eine unauflösbare Dialektik: Kunst und politischer Zweck sind einander nicht äußerlich, ihre Beziehung ist nicht durch Konflikt oder gegenseitigen Ausschluss gekennzeichnet, sondern vielmehr durch das Versprechen schöpferischer Reibung und gegenseitiger Bereicherung. Dies entspricht nicht der Art und Weise, in der die Literaturwissenschaft traditionell über die Beziehung der Literatur zur Sphäre der Politik nachgedacht hat. Sie hat vielmehr dazu geneigt, den Versuch, Kunst als politische Arbeit zu begreifen, als Kategorienfehler zubetrachten - als eine von außen herangetragene Zumutung, die beiden schadet: der Kunst und der Politik. [.] Wenn wir verschüttete literaturgeschichtliche Genealogien wiederherstellen, um der theoretischen Untersuchung alternative Wege aufzuzeigen, orientieren wir uns an neueren Bemühungen, ausgewählte Episoden politisierten Schreibens nicht als literaturgeschichtliche Anomalien zu betrachten, sondern als Schlüsselmomente in der Konfiguration der Beziehung zwischen Literatur und Politik - als einflussreiche Epizentren interventionistischer Kunst, von denen aus Debatten über Literaturpolitik und Praktiken engagierten Schreibens in neue und global ausgedehnte Kontexte ausstrahlen können. Die von uns vorgeschlagene Periodisierung verbindet experimentell drei Perioden intensiv politisierter und aktivistischer Kunst und Schriftstellerei: die Zwischenkriegszeit, die langen 1960er Jahre und die Gegenwart. Damit sollen alternative Traditionen sichtbar gemacht werden, die Raymond Williams zufolge oft an den Rändern des Jahrhunderts zurückgelassen wurden. Diese Periodisierung verzichtet auch bewusst darauf, eine einzige oder eindeutige Geschichte politisierter Literatur nachzuzeichnen.

    In den gegenwärtigen Debatten über politische Verantwortung und Wirkungsmöglichkeiten kultureller Formen wie Literatur und Theater, Film, Fernsehen und neue Medien, Performance-Kunst und Street Art ist ein gewandeltes, zivilgesellschaftlich erweitertes Verständnis des Politischen auffällig, das auch den erstarrten Dualismus von Engagement und Autonomie der Künste neu infrage stellt. Das Politische in der Literatur wird nicht mehr wie lange Zeit üblich von der ästhetischen Eigenart abgegrenzt und daher auch nicht auf unmittelbare und direkte Thematisierung impliziter politischer Bezüge reduziert.
