    Some of the articles in this volume tackle theoretical issues as illustrated by translation examples, highlighting major flaws and successes in translation practice, while other Contributors approach the phenomenon of translation from a more socio-cultural, ideologically critical angle, thus reflecting the current wide scope of theoretical and practical aspects of literary translation. The practical aspects include various kinds of literary discourses, which are analysed with a view toward gaining a good understanding of the characteristics of the literary genres involved. In sum, this volume embraces a whole range of topics that are currently discussed both in university classes as well as in most well known translation journals. The present collection of papers is a good introduction to topical work carried out in literary translation and its applications.

    Marcel Reich-Ranicki stellte 1991 fest, dass die deutsche Literatur seit den 1970er Jahren unerhört unerotisch sei. Das Problem der literarischen Bearbeitung des Erotischen scheint eine der schwierigsten künstlerischen Aufgaben zu sein. Die damit verbundenen Schwierigkeiten sind, abhängig von der Epoche, unterschiedlich bedingt. Im 19. Jahrhundert mussten sich die Autoren aller (un-)möglichen Metaphern bedienen, um das Verborgene zu verbildlichen. Und sogar dann brachte das Endresultat oft schwerwiegende Kontroversen mit sich, die heute fast unglaublich vorkommen. Andererseits stößt man in der mittelalterlichen Minnesang-Dichtung und dann in zahllosen Verserzählungen auf Manches, was die liberalsten aufklärerischen Verleger sogar heute noch in Verlegenheit bringen würde. Aus moderner Perspektive erweist sich aber die Frage nach den ästhetisch akzeptablen Formen der erzählten Sexualität längst als obsolet.Der vorliegende Sammelband zu den verschiedenen Sexualitätsbildern in der (deutschsprachigen) Literatur setzt sich zum Ziel, die historische Komplexität des Problemfeldes Sexualitätanhand ausgewählter Textbeispiele literaturästhetisch genauer zu beleuchten und damit analytische Kriterien zu gewinnen, um neues Licht auf die verschiedensten literarhistorischen Epochen und kulturellen Bedingungen zu werfen.

    What is the meaning of a "bestseller" for the history of literature? How do we defi ne it in the fi rst place, and what consequences does the success on the book market have for the literary evaluation of a text? What is the relationship between quantity and quality? Many literary scholars shy away from doing research on "bestsellers", but the question regarding the formation of a literary canon is closely connected with this issue. How do we evaluate the quality of a text in the fi rst place? The topic of the "bestseller" forces us to examine more closely the relationship between the reading public, literary scholarship, and the book market. On the one hand we have to examine the sales strategies for a book, on the other we have to consider what intentions a literary text might pursue fi rst of all, and how we as literary scholars have to engage with the text critically. From this results also the challenge to re-investigate the foundation of literary scholarship and to take note of premodern and modern "bestsellers" in their social-historical and mental-historical relevance, without ignoring the textual aesthetics.

Similarly, medieval history knows of numerous struggles by various peoples to maintain their own freedom or political independence. Nevertheless, as this study illustrates, throughout the pre-modern period, the loss of freedom could happen quite easily, affecting high and low (including kings and princes) and there are many literary texts and historical documents that address the problems of imprisonment and even enslavement (Georgius of Hungary, Johann Schiltberger, Hans Ulrich Krafft, etc.). Simultaneously, philosophers and theologians discussed intensively the fundamental question regarding free will (e.g., Augustine) and political freedom (e.g., John of Salisbury). Moreover, quite a large number of major pre-modern poets spent a long time in prison where they composed some of their major works (Boethius, Marco Polo, Charles d'Orléans, Thomas Malory, etc.). This book brings to light a vast range of relevant sources that confirm the existence of this fundamental and impactful discourse on freedom, imprisonment, and enslavement
