    At European universities, writing is a traditional way of learning, assessment, and independent study, but it is handled in an implicit, tradition-based way that has only recently been contrasted with and supported by a more explicit writing ped-agogy. Still, little systematic knowledge is available about the pedagogical ap-proaches to writing, writing practices, and genres across Europe and much of it is codified in the national languages without correlation to internationally accept-ed terminology and theories. This book explores the writing cultures of Europe, nation by nation, and reports the idiosyncrasies for each respective country. The reports are based on a 17-item topic list used by the authors to collect data be-fore synthesizing the results. Next to writing practices and genres, a high level of emphasis was placed on the structure of educational systems, the languages in use, and the kind of support provided for student writers. Note: This research project has been conducted within the framework of COST Action IS0703 “European Research Network on Learning to Write Effectively”, funded by the European Union. We are also thankful to Christiane Donahue, Eliza Kitis, Charles Bazerman, Helmut Gruber, and David Russell for their cooperation and support in this project. ; Wissenschaftliches Schreiben an europäischen Hochschulen ist eine herkömmliche Form des Lernens, Prüfens und autonomen Studierens, auch wenn es in einer impliziten, eher auf Tradition denn auf bewusster Didaktik beruhenden Weise eingesetzt wird.     Thesis Writer (TW) ist eine Web-gestützte Lernumgebung, die derzeit an der ZHAW in Winterthur/Schweiz entwickelt und eingesetzt wird. TW hat die Funktion, Schreibende auf dem BA und MA Niveau beim Verfassen ihrer Abschlussarbeiten zu unterstützen. Dazu bietet TW den Usern ein Schreibprogramm an, das mit verschiedenen integrierten Tools dabei hilft, Abschlussarbeiten zu verstehen, planen, strukturieren und zu gestalten. Zu diesen Hilfen gehören u.a. ein Planungstool, ein Proposal Wizard und eine grosse Zahl an kurzen Tutorials mit Instruktionen für die Aufgaben, die in jedem Stadium des Schreib-/ Forschungsprozesses anstehen. Weiterhin gibt es sprachliche Unterstützungstools, die u.a. aus einer Sammlung von Beispielen, einem Phrasebook und einem Korpus-gestützten Suchinstrument zur Analyse des Sprachgebrauchs bestehen. TW kann individuell genutzt werden, hat aber auch eine Funktion zum kooperativen Schreiben mit der mehrere Schreibende gleichzeitig am Text arbeiten können. TW ist zweisprachig Deutsch/ Englisch angelegt und kann in jeder der beiden Sprachen von L1 und L2 Schreibenden genutzt werden. TW ist besonders dazu geeignet eine grosse Anzahl von Studierenden gleichzeitig anzuleiten und kann für einzelne Fächern adaptiert werden. Die Intention des Systems ist, die Anleitung für forschendes Handeln, wissenschaftliches Denken, Genreverständnis und Sprachgebrauch so miteinander zu verzahnen, dass ein tieferes Verständnis des Schreibens möglich wird. Für uns ist es auch ein Tool der Schreibforschung, das viele Daten über den Schreibprozess liefern kann. Wir werden die wichtigsten Funktionen von TW demonstrieren und dann genauer auf die sprachliche Unterstützung für L1 und L2 Schreibende eingehen. Wir werden unsere ersten Erfahrungen im Einsatz des Tools berichten und geplante Verbesserungen bzw. Erweiterungen ansprechen.

    Thesis Writer is a newly created online learning environment, supporting students in mastering the various organizational, cognitive, social and linguistic demands of thesis writing. Users of Thesis Writer are offered tutorials and organizational aids to anticipate, prepare, plan and write their theses. Conceptually, Thesis Writer has been designed in such a way to initiate self-governed and self-organized learning processes, coupled with peer and tutored feedback, if required. Discipline-specific support can be provided when Thesis Writer is integrated into a particular degree program. New tools have been created to support the formulation process by integrating large discipline-specific corpora from which users can derive linguistic support through an integrated IMS Corpus Work Bench. The demonstration will offer insights into the construction principles and will allow participants to try out the functionality of the main tools. So far, Thesis Writer has been tested by a limited number of individuals, but preparations for use within study programs are now under way. Languages available on Thesis Writer are English and German, but others may subsequently be added.     The article sets out with the question of how writing cultures in a multilingual setting of 50 countries and even more languages like Europe can be studied. Each country formed its own system of higher education and looks back to its own lines of teaching traditions. In spite of attempts to “harmonize” higher education through what is called the “Bologna Process”, communication on writing in Europe is still lacking a consistent terminology, especially on genre and writing practices. The article gives a short overview on genre theory and defines what “educational genres” are and how they develop. Examples are given on their relationships to writing practices and writing cultures. The contribution of contrastive and cross-cultural research to an understanding of national writing cultures is discussed and difficulties in interpreting contrastive studies are mentioned. Writing and genre use, it is argued, are framed by a large set of context conditions like classroom practices, curricular organization, institutional and disciplinary writing cultures as well as national and language-specific conditions so that it is difficult to interpret results from contrastive research. By outlining the writing cultures of France, Germany, Italy, and Romania, four examples are given of how national cultures may develop and which role genres play in shaping writing practices. The article concludes with some remarks on developmental trends of writing cultures.
