    No thesis - no graduation. Academic writing poses manifold challenges to students, instructors and institutions. Consequently, the question arose to what extent academic writing instruction can be supported electronically. With Thesis Writer (TW), a domain-specific, technology-supported learning environment for scaffolding academic writing, combined with an online editor optimised for producing academic text was implemented. Recently, a tracking function was also implemented that allows for fine-grained studying of user interaction with the system, and therefore also their writing and learning processes. In the demonstration, the researchers will present the data types collected, the tracking technology, and the learning analytics opportunities that TW provides.

    Although all members of EATAW will have their own thoughts on digitalization and, recently, more publications are devoted to this topic, we miss coherent discourses and feel that other contexts (mainly from the IT disciplines) have taken the lead in these discussions. For future EATAW conferences, we suggest placing a strong emphasis on digitalization and would like to discuss which aspects of it should be stressed most. For a first step, it would be great to initiate an exchange on hot issues in teaching and research related to digitalization and explore ideas for future collaboration. Christian Rapp and Otto Kruse will give an introduction to the session and explain the idea of it with a short input about some problems connected to the challenges of new digital tools for the teaching of writing and the question of whether and how much writing teachers should take over control and ownership of the new technology or leave it to the IT and E-Learning disciplines. Kalli Benetos will talk about the need for researchers and educators to put DESIGN and intent before technology in adopting more design-based research approaches to drive technology development and uses, instead of being led by "market forces". Chris Anson will address the following question: What are the consequences - ethical, developmental, rhetorical, and interpersonal - of having computers “read” and evaluate student writing?

    Transdisciplinary research is research not only on, but also for and, most of all, with practitioners. In the research framework of transdisciplinarity, scholars and practitioners collaborate throughout research projects with the aim of mutual learning. This paper shows the value transdisciplinarity can add to media linguistics. It does so by investigating the digital literacy shift in journalism: the change, in the last two decades, from the predominance of a writing mode that we have termed focused writing to a mode we have called writing-by-the-way. Large corpora of writing process data have been generated and analyzed with the multimethod approach of progression analysis in order to combine analytical depth with breadth. On the object level of doing writing in journalism, results show that the general trend towards writing-by-the-way opens up new niches for focused writing. On a meta level of doing research, findings explain under what conditions transdisciplinarity allows for deeper insights into the medialinguistic object of investigation.

    Keynote ; This keynote uses the case of collaborative professional text production to discuss the concept of linguistic practice from both theoretical and practical perspectives. By drawing on large corpora of real-life data and applying the multi-method approach of progression analysis, practices are identified that allow for flexible planning in the dynamic system of text production. Findings show that key features of the text production practices under investigation, as well as of the writing phases they dominate, scale up. This means that the patterns found in both practices and phases recur in similar forms throughout the various levels and time frames of text production. They are manifested during the split seconds it takes to make stylistic decisions as well as over the days, weeks and months of organizational document cycling. This understanding of scalability reaches far beyond former concepts of planning in text production research. In conclusion, it appears text production research conducted in real-life contexts sharpens theoretical approaches to linguistic practices on one hand, and contributes to sustainably solving practical problems on the other.

    Schreiben gehört in zahlreichen Berufsfeldern zum Anforderungsprofil der Mitarbeitenden. Die entsprechenden, oft sehr spezifischen Kompetenzen werden in der Berufsausbildung oder im Studium indes meist nicht vermittelt. Unternehmen, Behörden und weitere Organisationen bieten ihrer Belegschaft deshalb oft interne Schreibfortbildungen an. Die Wirkung solcher Fortbildungsmaßnahmen ist allerdings – nicht nur, aber auch im Bereich des Schreibens – kaum erforscht. Im Rahmen der hier vorgestellten Einzelfall-Evaluation wurde eine mehrjährige Inhouse Schreibfortbildung multiperspektivisch untersucht. Als Methoden kamen u.a. schriftliche Befragungen, Fokusgruppeninterviews mit Kursteilnehmenden, eine Textanalyse und Interviews mit typischen Leser(inne)n zur Anwendung. Die Evaluation zeigt, dass die regelmäßige, teamzentrierte Fortbildung vor allem positive Auswirkungen auf die individuellen und kooperativen Schreibprozesse hatte. Zudem konnte ein positiver Effekt auf die Kooperationsbereitschaft und die Identifikation mit dem Team festgestellt werden. Nicht nachgewiesen werden konnten hingegen Auswirkungen auf die Qualität der Texte einzelner Autor(inn)en.

    The evolution of digital technologies and the writing tools that have subsequently been developed from them opened the way for the emergence of writing analytics as a field of academic research. Within digital writing tools, writing analytics are used to gather and analyze data for research, and to provide automated feedback for writers and insights for instructors. Writing analytics methods and tools can help improve our understanding of writing processes and products. Current reviews of digital writing tools show that much of what writing analytics has to offer has been garnered for the purposes of automating evaluation and scoring, leaving an application gap for writing tools that support pedagogies aiming to develop effective writing strategies. Building upon the development of writing analytics methods and tools can help future tool designs to better support effective writing pedagogy and practice, and suggest future foci for writing analytics advancement. This proposed workshop aims to bring together writing pedagogy researchers, writing instructors, writing tool developers, and writing analytics specialists in order to explore the potential contributions of their respective fields in the development of effective digital writing environments, and also to provide a forum for the planning of future collaborative works.

    Die Digitalisierung hat in den letzten vierzig Jahren alles auf den Kopf gestellt, was die Gutenberg-Ära uns an Schreibtechniken, Literalitätsformen und Textwelten hinterlassen hat. Nicht allein die Schreibprogramme in unseren Computern waren für diese Revolution verantwortlich, sondern auch die Flut an Innovationen, die im Gefolge von Internet & Co. entstanden sind. Zusammen mit den Neuerungen des Cloud-Computings und Machine Learnings haben wir jetzt Maschinen zur Verfügung, die nicht einfach Schreibmedium sind, sondern das Denken und Formulieren beim Schreiben aktiv unterstützen oder sogar selbst die Textproduktion übernehmen.Wir werden die Entwicklung der Digitalisierung des Schreibens kurz rekonstruieren und dann mit Thesis Writer ein eigenes Tool vorstellen, das zeigt, welche Möglichkeiten die neue Technologie heute bietet. Thesis Writer enthält einen neu gestalteten, virtuellen Arbeitspatz für Schreibende, der eine ganze Serie unterstützender Tools in Klickweite bereithält. Prozessunterstützung, rhetorische Hilfen, Kooperations- und Feedbackmöglichkeiten, Projektmanagement und einiges mehr sind so in den Arbeitsplatz integriert, dass sie den Schreibfluss unterstützen, ohne die Schreibenden allzu sehr im Denken zu unterbrechen.In diesem Beitrag werden wir auch darauf eingehen, welche Dimensionen diese digitalen Neuerungen angenommen haben und wie wir uns in der Schreibdidaktik der Auseinandersetzung mit ihnen stellen können.
