; Abstract ; When Goethe, in his monumental Farbenlehre (1810), tried to attack Newton’s theory of light and color, he used a method that he called ‘multiplying the experiences’. He varied different parameters of the Newtonian experiments in order to create space for alternatives to Newton’s theory. He discovered, among other things, the complement to the Newtonian spectrum, which looks like its color negative and is created by exchanging the roles of light and darkness. Ingo Nussbaumer ingeniously extended Goethe’s method to discover six additional color spectra. They appear when pairs of complementary colors are used instead of the light/dark contrasts in Newton and Goethe’s experiments. The new color spectra look just as differentiated as Newton and Goethe’s spectra, but unlike those spectra, contain the uncolored ‘colors’ black and white. The relations and symmetries that Ingo Nussbaumer revealed in the world of colors may help us develop a deeper understanding of the principles of human color perception. In any case, they have a large aesthetic appeal. And they inspire speculations about counterfactual developments in the history of science: Would Newton’s theory of light and color have been so readily accepted if Nussbaumer’s new color spectra were known three centuries ago?

; Abstract ; Andrey Tarkovsky’s aesthetics is characterised predominantly through his image motifs. For Tarkovsky the film image is “basically observation of life’s facts within time, organised according to the pattern of life itself, and observing its time laws.” The art of film is therefore a “sculpting in time.” This treatise examines the epistemological and historical foundations of various image motifs in Tarkovsky’s films: Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, Nostalgia and Sacrifice. It attempts to illustrate how the cinematic image - as represented in the presence, history, remembrance and dreams - unfolds into its own temporal and spatial existence and draws its bounds against reality and its narrative continuity. This study also aims at interpreting the technical nature Tarkovsky’s image motifs, such as slow motion, overcoming inertia and gravity (motif of floating), and their epistemological and aesthetic implications.

Over the past roughly two decades, the interconnected concepts of reparation, restitution, and commemorative culture have gained renewed momentum – in academic discourse as much as in activist, artistic, and political contexts. This development insists on a critique of the material and systemic conditions of societies and global relations. In their 2018 report on the restitution of looted cultural artifacts, for example, Bénédicte Savoy and Felwine Sarr discuss restitutions in the light of a new ethics of relations. Individual acts of restitution, but also the processes of material and immaterial reparation that go with them, are viewed as mediators in the by definition irreparable legacy of colonialism and its present repercussions. A new ethics of relations might even go beyond anthropocentrism: The destruction of nature in the Anthropocene and the destruction of humanity that is colonialism both require a fundamental questioning of the premises of western modernity and a radically different relationship to the world. The present volume aims to examine different discourses and practices of reparation, bringing together perspectives from cultural studies, memory studies, post- or decolonial studies as well as literary studies. Chapters from these disciplines are complemented by contributions from the fields of philosophy, art, and literature in order to explore the multiple facets of reparation. With contributions by Kader Attia, Lucia della Fontana, Ibou Coulibaly Diop, Alexandre Gefen, Hannah Grimmer, hn. lyonga, Helena Janeczek, Markus Messling, Clément Ndé Fongang, Aurélia Kalisky, Fabiola Obame, Angelica Pesarini, Aurore Reck, Olivier Remaud, Patricia Oster-Stierle, Sahra Rausch, Igiaba Scego, Ibrahima Sene, Christiane Solte-Gresser, Jonas Tinius. ; European Research Council (ERC)

The circulation and entanglements of human beings, data, and goods have not necessarily and by themselves generated a universalising consciousness. The "global" and the "universal", in other words, are not the same. The idea of a world-society remains highly contested. Our times are marked by the fragmentation of a double relativistic character: the inevitable critique of Western universalism on the one hand, and resurgent identitarian and neo-nationalistic claims to identity on the other. Sources of an argumentation for a strong universalism brought forward by Western traditions such as Christianity, Marxism, and Liberalism have largely lost their legitimation. All the while, manifold and situated narratives of a common world that re-address the universal are under way of being produced and gain significance. This volume tracks the development and relevance of such cultural and social practices that posit forms of what we call minor universality. It asks: Where and how do contemporary practices open up concrete settings so as to create experiences, reflections and agencies of a shared humanity? ; European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant

‘Homeric heroes’ are primarily the characters of the Iliad and the Odyssey, epic poems attributed to Homer (2nd half of the 8th century BC, authorship and dating are disputed). The best-known examples are the respective protagonists Achilles (the Iliad) and Odysseus (the Odyssey). Secondarily – but not discussed in detail here – any heroes in the tradition and historical reception of the Homeric epics can be called ‘Homeric’, if, for example, Odysseus himself appears in a later work or his characteristics are given to another character. As the earliest known works of European literature and as a canonical cultural reference point in antiquity (and, with some reservations perhaps, to the present day), the Homeric epics decisively defined European notions of heroism. The Homeric heroes are not only called “heroes” (ἥρωες), but their authority as great figures of myth and prehistory, as well as their embedding in the epic genre (later called ‘heroic song’ and ‘heroic epic’), made them models of heroizations and heroisms.

The decisive feature of superheroism is its fictionality: superheroes fall outside the worldly realms of heroism by virtue of their fantastic character. The use of their usually miraculous abilities, namely: their superpowers, which distinguish them from other people and remove them from the grids of normalisation schemes, is therefore also staged in most cases as a visual exception – be it in comics, films, TV series or computer and video games.

The heroic manifests through media. In arts and popular culture, the affiliation to a genre or the invocation of generic conventions co-determines the form of (re)presentation. The concept of genericity recognises that genre traits and conventions significantly impact these (re)presentations. For the representation and impact of the heroic (or certain aspects of it), genericity can be of fundamental importance. Some genres are more conducive to the (re)presentation of the heroic, or even require it be (re)presented in a certain way, while other genres limit the options of (re)presenting the heroic. As a result, there is a natural affinity between the heroic and particular genres or subgenres. These genres offer a specific “affordance”, i.e. conditions that enable the heroic to be manifested in a particular way.

Attempts to capture the terms ‘hero(ine)’ and ‘heroic’ in supertemporal and essentialist definitions are rooted in a subliminal need and seem obvious due to the persistence and topicality of the subject. However, heroic properties (and their theoretical analyses) are, as a vast number of studies on the subject shows, specific to a culture, group and era. To date, all-encompassing definitions have not been able to reflect this historicity. Against this background, a heuristic working definition and delimitation of the concept appear sensible and necessary. The definition of hero(ine) proposed herein is based on an understanding of ‘heroic’ as a culturally constructed, relational and processual phenomenon: hero(in)es substantially contribute to the establishment of collectively potent models of order, are created subject to certain social and historical conditions and are represented in various media. This understanding directs our attention towards the processes of heroization and heroism, i.e., firstly, towards the question of how a real (living or dead) person or a fictional character becomes a hero(ine) of a collective and, secondly, towards the collective guidance from and adoption of conduct considered heroic. Heroization and heroism occur within the framework of communicative processes that serve not only the social functionalisation of the heroic, but also have their own dynamic and creative power.
