    "The Descent of the Soul and the Archaic explores the motif of kátabasis (a "descent" into an imaginal underworld) and the importance it held for writers from antiquity to the present, with an emphasis on its place in psychoanalytic theory. This collection of chapters builds on Jung's insights into katabasis and nekyia as models for deep self-descent and the healing process which follows. The contributors explore ancient and modern notions of the self, as obtained through a "descent" to a deeper level of imaginal experience. With an awareness of the difficulties of applying contemporary psychological precepts to ancient times, the contributors explore various modes of self-formation as a process of discovery. Presented in three parts, the chapters assess contexts and texts, goddesses, and theoretical alternatives. This book will be of interest to scholars and analysts working in wide-ranging fields, including classical studies, all schools of psychoanalysis, especially Jung's, and postmodern thought, especially the philosophy of Deleuze"--

In Rede stehen dabei Robert Musil, Stefan George, Rainer-Maria Rilke, Heimito von Doderer, Else Lasker-Schüler, Hermann Broch und auch neuere Literaten: Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Martin Walser und Durs Grünbein. Abgesehen von den neueren Autoren, die bisher nicht in diesem Zusammenhang thematisiert wurden, eröffnen auch die Beiträge über die ältere Rezeption neue Perspektiven, sodass hier für beide Perioden neue Erkenntnisse bezüglich Nietzsches Einfluss auf sie vorgelegt werden. Zudem treten die beiden Rezeptionsphasen in einen Dialog, der verdeutlicht, welche Veränderungen sich ergeben haben und der damit die Forschung bereichert. Eine Bereicherung, die auch Auswirkungen auf die Germanistik und die philosophische Nietzscheforschung haben wird

    This book argues that Nietzsche's polemics against the 19th-century reception of Goethe and Schiller should not obscure his own more positive evaluation of Weimar classicism, as has generally been the case. The authors uncover the continuing influence of Weimar classicism at the very heart of Nietzsche's aesthetic theory, which in turn became the cornerstone of his epistemological and moral concerns. The book takes as its starting point the view that 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' has a single, coherent message that it identifies with what Goethe called 'the gospel of beauty.' A hitherto unappreciated unity of plot, style, and argument is thus revealed in both 'Zarathustra' and Nietzsche's philosophical 'oeuvre' as a whole, showing how he participates in a 'perennial aesthetic.' In this connection Nietzsche's statement in 'The Gay Science' is revealing: 'I want to learn more and more to see what is necessary in things as what is beautiful ? then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful.' The book provides an overview of related scholarly literature; discusses Nietzsche's aesthetic theory in 'The Birth of Tragedy'; recounts the composition of 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' and offers an interpretation of its 'aesthetic gospel'; a concluding chapter explores historical continuities in aesthetic theory. By demonstrating the constitutive function of the aesthetics of Weimar classicism in his philosophy, this book opens up a fresh and original perspective on Nietzsche. Paul Bishop is Professor of German, and R. H. Stephenson is William Jacks Professor of German Language and Literature, both at the University of Glasgow.

In Rede stehen dabei Robert Musil, Stefan George, Rainer-Maria Rilke, Heimito von Doderer, Else Lasker-Schüler, Hermann Broch und auch neuere Literaten: Bertolt Brecht, Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Martin Walser und Durs Grünbein. Abgesehen von den neueren Autoren, die bisher nicht in diesem Zusammenhang thematisiert wurden, eröffnen auch die Beiträge über die ältere Rezeption neue Perspektiven, sodass hier für beide Perioden neue Erkenntnisse bezüglich Nietzsches Einfluss auf sie vorgelegt werden. Zudem treten die beiden Rezeptionsphasen in einen Dialog, der verdeutlicht, welche Veränderungen sich ergeben haben und der damit die Forschung bereichert. Eine Bereicherung, die auch Auswirkungen auf die Germanistik und die philosophische Nietzscheforschung haben wird

This collection of chapters builds on Jung's insights into katabasis and nekyia as models for deep self-descent and the healing process which follows. The contributors explore ancient and modern notions of the self, as obtained through a "descent" to a deeper level of imaginal experience. A hitherto unappreciated unity of plot, style, and argument is thus revealed in both 'Zarathustra' and Nietzsche's philosophical 'oeuvre' as a whole, showing how he participates in a 'perennial aesthetic.' In this connection Nietzsche's statement in 'The Gay Science' is revealing: 'I want to learn more and more to see what is necessary in things as what is beautiful ? then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful.' The book provides an overview of related scholarly literature; discusses Nietzsche's aesthetic theory in 'The Birth of Tragedy'; recounts the composition of 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra' and offers an interpretation of its 'aesthetic gospel'; a concluding chapter explores historical continuities in aesthetic theory. By demonstrating the constitutive function of the aesthetics of Weimar classicism in his philosophy, this book opens up a fresh and original perspective on Nietzsche.
