The Recife’s School was a Brazilian movement during the last quarter of the 19th century, whose main goals were to inform the Empire Court of provincial problems and introduce Brazil to ideas and theories of German philosophers. The first history of Brazilian literature was written in 1888 by Sílvio Romero and is considered part of this movement. According to this work, Brazil should be connected to German thought. Romero’s reception of the German authors is not passive; he engages in dialogue through his text by connecting, criticizing and elaborating upon his references. The autonomy of thought he proves in this process is the same autonomy he demands from Brazilian intellectualists. In order to develop the talents inherent to Brazil, he believes they should widen their cultural horizons, instead of only being dependent on French culture. Only then Brazil would be able to occupy a position equal amongst developed nations. Romero’s conception of race and his idea, that it is possible to include the totality of Brazilian literature in his work are both out of date. However, in the História da Literatura Brasileira there are methodological aspects in common with the modern theories on writing histories of literature, such as the choice of texts not only according to aesthetics criterions and the interdisciplinarity, because the author relates biology, sociology, economy, and politics with literature.

More than two hundred years after its first publication, the literary work "The Sorrows of Young Werther" remains able to provoke different feelings and opinions - many times put in conflict - when dealing with the young man who died of love in his refuse to a life marked by deprivations, which were stopping him from fulfilling such a genuine desire. The epistolary novel of the young writer then Johann Wolfgang von Goethe has today a few remakes, parodies and three movie adaptations. We certainly know that "Werther" was responsible for reaching in literature a revolution, releasing to the world one of the national and authentic artistic expressions from the German people, who at that time were no longer involved with the classical patterns brought from France, as already pointed out by Hamburger Dramaturgy by Lessing. For either its huge popularity, in a global scale, or even its remarkable plot, conducted by the protagonist's exaggerated sentimentality, this work is commonly associated as a turning point to the beginning of Romanticism in Europe, being denominated as 'pre-romantic'. However, from its integration within an artistic-literary context exclusively German - the Sturm und Drang - the mentioned writing will be analyzed in terms of both its intrinsic relation with the concepts taken by many artists of that period, as well as another interpretative possibility that opens up from it: the building of a criticism concerning that time's social organization basis, enabled by Goethe, right during his first successful work. We may glimpse throughout the dominant characteristics from this period in question - the expression of emotions, passions and feelings consolidated by the free spirit from the second half of the 18th century - that the narrative can relocate itself for the questioning of what it portraits, especially when it comes to Werther's figurativization as the ideal and revolutionary hero, once given the circumstances over which the diegesis is built, like the focalization and the narrative voice, that gradually reveal the protagonist's dubious and contradictory personality through the novel.

In this paper we analyse historical and semantic aspects of the terms "doutor" (Portuguese) – "Doktor" (German), which have quite different values in both cultures. We present the development of the term "doutor" from its Latin origin to the present use in Portuguese, considering it as a polite form of address, among others. We contrast this form of address as regards special professionals in Brazil with the situation in Germany, in reference to the legislation and the jurisprudence in both countries. The specific usage of the address with the title of doctor in both cultures, especially in the legal domain, is illustrated with examples. We conclude commenting on the relevance of this topic for translation studies and translation practice.
